The only time he has been fantastic was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He was terrible as Kahn, he's fun as Sherlock, he was forgettable in August: Osage County and Fifth Estate. He's getting great reviews for The Imitation Game, and I am looking forward to that.
He has done a lot more then that. A lot more.

So you are saying he is good in films that are good and forgettable in terrible films. That seems about right for almost any actor, and we best hope Dr Strange is a good movie then.

I love that one judges an actor on a very small section of their work and then becomes an expert.

:woot: Never claimed to be an expert, just voicing my own opinion. Sorry you don't like it. I have seen his high profile work and that's my assessment of it. I have also seen War Horse, Starter for 10, Four Lions, Whistleblower and 12 Years a Slave but didn't feel the need to include them. Or his uncredited role on MI-5 that one time. I don't find it necessary to have seen every performance to have an opinion.

Yeah, BC does have a ton of BBC work beyond Sherlock. I see his face on other Netflix Instant thingys.

I think he does a lot of stage work as well. Dude really does have mad skills…

My only exposure to Cumberbatch, aside from endless fan drooling over how awesome he is, was in his terrible portrayal of Khan in a bad Star Trek movie.

My initial reaction to this is boredom. I guess all of his vocal internet fans will hype this as awesome news though, so they can have their moment. I haven't watched the projects they say he's great in, so I'm not in the best position to judge.

You can have an opinion. But what that opinion is based on counts for a lot. But it is ok, play the smug game.

I never said he was a bad actor or a bad choice, I just don't think he's such an untouchable talent that those jumping up and down with glee can act like those who don't like the choice or are simply not excited about it as other possible choices are simply misinformed.

because you haven't been playing smug :whatever:

His big blockbuster villain role, his most recent Oscar hopefuls with good sized roles, and his award winning successful TV show seem like what you should base an opinion on to me

Hyperbole to defend position. Check.

If you're going to make judgments about an actor's skills, then YES you SHOULD seek out their other work, not just the "big ones." Otherwise, you can have your opinion, but it's not a very credible one. Sorry, but that's just the way it goes.

No, he wasn't.

CumberKhan was that movie's saving grace.

I thought Cumberbatch was great in STID, but he was clearly playing another version of Khan. Thus I can understand Trek fans not being too hot on his performance.

Yeah, I've heard VERY few people, be they critics or the GA, bash his PERFORMANCE in that movie. In fact, it is one of the most praised things about the film. I seen people complain about how the character was WRITTEN, but that's not his fault.

I don't play, I was simply born a jerk. Ask Suzanne or SPIDEY.

I can confirm this… DarthSkywalker is a huuuuuuuuuge jerk.

A jerky mcjerkface, if you will.

Just like Chris Evans is a Mr. McBeardy… Darth is "McJerky!"

Now, carry on!

With anything the more you see the better opinion you can craft, but I don't see there being a minimum amount of films. It's strange to me that I could have seen his big blockbuster villain role, his most recent Oscar hopefuls with good sized roles, and his award winning successful TV show and not be able to craft a credible opinion about him, which isn't even a bad opinion. I think he's a good actor.

You'd never know that Loki is a master wizard with how he's been portrayed in the films.

Not unless you actually listen to the dialog in these films since in Thor1 Hogun clearly says Loki is a master of magic.

Also, in the Avengers, not just anybody can pick up the sceptre and start shooting eldritch bolts out of it. It implies he has innate magical ability to make it work. Now that he's in the seat of power, who knows how his powers will develop.

He's a master of illusions.

He's that to be sure. I'm just saying that's not all he can do. Magic isn't all just internal
power but also using knowledge and items and such like how he found the ways between the worlds and knew how to use the scepter Thanos gave him and the casket of ancient
winters. Strange's powers are external in nature after all as well.

One other problem (besides fan letdown): I can't imagine BC dissapearing into a role at this point in his career. I mean, most of the other MCU cast members were at best mid-level stars before they got cast (or they underwent some change in appearance), but Benedict Cumberbatch has a hit TV show, had his face and/or voice in two of the biggest blockbuster franchises around, starred in multiple Oscar-buzzed films, and has been all over the internet for quite some time now (and he's probably going to pretty much keep his look for this). How are we supposed to see those cheekbones and that voice onscreen and think anything other than "Benedict Cumberbatch in a Doctor Strange costume, standing next to Tony Stark and Thor"?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it'll be one screaming hell of a challenge.
