Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 2

And people are allowed to challenge those differing opinions on things.

Well, as I said, I just think it's a boring, predictable choice. I wasn't really that excited about the list of actors they were looking at to begin with though.

Always seems like it's the same 9-10 actors being considered for every comic book adaptation nowadays. Can we get something new?

What the H are you talking about???? Where did I ever say I wanted a black man for Strange. I've never mentioned not one black actor for Strange. Now if you are referring to Oscar Isaacs, who's latino but you are confused and can't tell the difference between a black a hispanic then it's your problem. Maybe we all look alike to you. Sweet Jesus!

Yes, I can't tell minorities apart :whatever:

Black/Asian/Hispanic, I just used Black as an example. Doctor Strange is White. Why is it a slam for Marvel to cast someone white as Doctor Strange.

HAH! Haters gonna hate, this'll be great. As I've pimped many times before, he's one of the few choices they've mulled over that I see bringing a brand of likeable, humorous dickishness that RDJ has and will be a great balance for being the dark, foreboding exposition teller while have a nice defined characterization. I do think Gyllenhaal or McGregor could've though.

I thought his persona would fit perfectly for this since STID and reaffirmed it with Sherlock, but didn't think it'd actually happen. Although he's an obvious choice, hopefully they'll take him into different places that'll catch doubters' attention.

Yeah these reactions are surprising to me, I mean maybe it is an easy choice but I want a Strange film to have guaranteed success.
Cumberbatch has been very successful with Sherlock, and is looking at an Oscar nomination this year with "The Imitation Game". The fashionable thing is to complain about whatever he does. General audiences, especially women, will love this.

He is a fantastic choice, and he will do just fine. Was is predictable? yeah surely but that doesn't make it a bad choice. When Affleck came out of nowhere for Batman they all jumped at him because no one saw it coming, it was unpredictable. What matters is if its a solid actor/actrees and if he/shw will perform in the role. Benedict has the acting chops to pull it off, so for me solid casting

Well I'm sure he won't be terrible. He just seems like an uninspired and safe choice.

Safe I get, but how is he "uninspired" exactly? I think you're using "inspired" and "unpredictable" as synonyms...and they're aren't.

Again, to me it's like calling Patrick Stewart or Christian Bale "uninspired" because they physically fit the role and have played characters with similar characteristics well. I don't think it's uninspired to want a great actor who you know would fit the character perfectly to play a certain role.

I think the issue with the choice is that he along with Hardy and Elba are fan cast for every single comic character in existence, and that's where the vitirol kinda stems. It ain't their fault, it's their fanbase's I guess, haha.

A POC led film in the MCU will happen, whether it be Black Panther or an Inhumans movie with the role of Black Bolt played by Vin Diesel (who is mixed race).

You know "fancasting" can be really amusing (or annoying depending on your POV). Fans constantly whine about studio taking the "safe" option and not "thinking outside the box." And then when studios DO do those things (Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, etc), fans then whine about them "not being right" for the part and start suggesting the more "safe" options instead. Really if you're a casting director, then you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Not matter what, fans are going to complain about something.
That's why studios don't listen to us nerds and they never ever should.

If he owns it no-one will care about how "uninspired" his casting is.

Of course. I'm not saying he'll do a bad job, but seeing as a casting announcement is all we have at this point, this is what we are talking about. It was exciting and interesting when RDJ got cast and when Chris Pratt got cast

That's just dumb. So they're popular, and so people get annoyed. Wow that's petty.

It's only 'predictable' because nerds have had him on fancast lists forever. Had no one mentioned him before today, it'd be 'outside the box'

what it boils down to is 'I wanted someone different to play Strange'

I too think that's a big part of it - people need to really differentiate annoying fandom from the art/artist they're celebrating.

When you cast Heath Ledger as the Joker, people wonder why you didn't go with the "obvious". When you cast Benedict Cumberbatch for Dr. Strange, it is too obvious. :lmao:

Really? Now we have complaints that Dr. Strange wasn't cast as a black guy or some other POC? Lol. Silly internet go home you're drunk.

Who the devil is complaining about that? No one. I've been on these boards way to long to know that no one here was lobbying for a black man to be cast as Strange. Some people just like to stir crap up.

Except that I remember all of the complaints when RDJ was cast. People whining that he didn't look like Tony Stark, or that he'd never carried a major franchise before, or my personal favorite "he'll show up on set coked out of his mind" (despite that fact that he'd been clean a sober for several years before IM 1).

He is new. You are aware this would actually be the first Comic Book Adaptation he stars in, in addition to this being the first tentpole is which he plays the protagonist in, in addition to this being his third tentpole he's starring in, in addition to this being his second tentpole that he is making a live appearance in? Are you aware of all these awarenesses? :o

Too many of you have been spending too much time in fancasting threads.

I understand you are being supportive, but that line just makes me smile. It isn't like we are talking about someone who isn't a fantastic actor. The man has mad skills.

While I was hoping for a more out of the box choice like Hawke, if Marvel vouches for him then
I will defer to their judgment of course as they have earned it.

Honestly, I don't get it.

We've decided to cast an actor who is incredibly talented and fits the character in every way.

People's reaction:

"Meh, predictable."

That's like saying they shouldn't have cast Patrick Stewart as Prof X because he was too right for the part. Honestly:whatever:

I for one couldn't be more excited about this pick. I've been a huge fan of Cumberbatch ever since I stumbled upon Sherlock way back when. He's very talented, and he's a perfect fit for the role. With him, you KNOW you're going to get a quality performance.

Nailed it. I think the fan-casting and drawn out speculation/negotiations really wore some people down.

I would have liked Brody, Ewan, or Fehr, but Cumberbatch is still perfect for the role.

Well whilst predictable and he has been rumoured for many roles, he hasn't been cast in any of them has he and who is to say what roles he has actually discussed before.

I would have preferred Gyllenhaal or McGregor but Cumberbatch will be great, if this is true, this is the probably the very reason Marvel are doing the press conference, they are getting annoyed at stuff leaking all the time.
