Ralph Finnes maaaannnn. He's done sorcerer supreme once already and he can do it again! No but seriously... I think he looks the part too.

I think, ideally, I'd want Johnny Depp for this. However, I've seen some interesting suggestions on here... Hugh Laurie being one of them.

... hmm.. hopefully the doc will have plenty of cool special FX.. (and I wish that original tv movie was out on dvd..)

Johnny Depp is a big NO. Strange needs to be a mentor type character for the other capes. Depp has never had that type of Liam Neeson type presence. We need a man that conveys wisdom not quirkiness. Strange has always been the dude to go to if you have a supernatural problem you can't solve with your ham fists or web shooters, Depp would be more like the guy you go to for party favors and funny facial expressions.

could anyone else almost see...

Tom Everett Scott (with a goatee and some grey strikes)
?

Voted for Depp.

Quirky and strange characters are his forte so a character called 'Doctor Strange' seems almost perfect and fated.

Before his star went astronomical with Jack Sparrow, Depp had carved out a nice little niche for himself as a versatile character actor known for picking non-comercial projects that interested him.

I think a lot of people have forgotten that because of the over saturation caused by POTC's 1,2 and 3.

I perosnally think Depp would be awesome in this role - and his known wouldnt look out of place alongside Norton and Downey Jnr etc.

Not to mention the fact that the guy was seemingly born with the perfect facial hair for Strange. :woot:

the ninth gate being one of my favorite depp movies, that being said, after seeing it in theaters years ago I said to myself leaving the theater....depp is doctor strange. that was 7-8 years ago. it's a no brainer, that picture above says it all. nobody can pull of that look more than depp can. seriously, it's like doctor strange leaped from his comic book pages to do the ninth gate.

Quinto is not a bad suggestion...

But I am leaning toward Joseph Fiennes:

Or Jim Caviezel:

Especially in the secluded monastery scenes:

This is the kind of role, like PotC, Public Enemys, and the Burton movies, the Depp would flourish in. Plus his age wouldn't really become a factor, as Strange to me never seemed like a spring chicken. If we had to wait 5 years or so til Del Toro is done with the Hobbit, yeah it would suck, but I think it might almost be worth the wait. I'd prefer it sooner, but I'd want quality over expediency.

Love those two choices, funny thing is Caveizel looks like Peter Hooten in that pic.

And the gold thread embroidery in that robe is pure strange.

That it is. Depps even got the patented Strange whisps of grey in the temples in that movie:-

The other 2 choices above are good too.

Fiennes, Caviezel or Depp would all be great in the role - but I'm tipping Depp purely because he has that ability to go places with a role that other actors cant, as befitting a character called Dr. Strange. It just kinda fits Depp like a glove. Plus, his name attached to the lead role just about gurantees interest from the GA.

Jim Cavziel is my pick. I know due to the character not being as well known to the mainstream it would need a boost without a huge celeb billing, but if you add in spectacle in the form of Baron Mordo, trips through dimensions, and even a glimpse of Dormammu, you're good.

I know what you mean, it's kinda like the Thor factor, I guess. Solid, on the button casting (nice mix of fresh faces, character actors and a couple of marquee names) with a firm faith placed in the story and visuals being enough to entice the audience in. One thing for sure, a Dr Strange film is sure going to have great visuals.

Actually, that's been Marvel's whole approach to their casting thus far, hasnt it?

Solid, known actors that actually fit the roles, as opposed to casting bigger names and changing the roles to suit them. I mean, look at Iron Man and TIH. When cast, RDJ was no 'mega-star', at least not in the sense that you think of a Will Smith or a Tom Cruise as a globally recognised megastar [almost like a brand], anyways.

Sure, RDJ was known, but it was because he was as notorious for his off-screen exploits as he was for his on-screen performances. Norton was the same, a big name certainly, responsible for some fine and varied performances, but not a megastar by any means.

Marvel are doing things right here, so you gotta beleive that whoever they pick will fit the role like a glove.

Usually what they do is cast a somewhat accomplished yet not tabloid entrenched actor as the main guy, and the supporting cast is usually comprised of popular thespians.

The only person on the poll that I could picture playing Dr. Strange is Johnny Depp. I think he'd be OK, but there's others I'd like to see better. In no particular order, I'd consider:

Hugh Jackman
Liam Neeson
Ioan Gruffudd

They're all already in the Marvel-verse as is. Neeson is a tad old for the role.

Yeah, good point. OK, I'll go vote for Johnny Depp now.

The Dr. Strange geek in me wants Depp. The realist in me knows we probably won't get him and that makes me sad :(

If the Script and the Director are right, I don't see why he wouldn't. Depp has a long history of taking roles because he finds them interesting, not because of money making potential. If Marvel puts together a package that could entice him, there's a good chance that he would take the part.

Imagine Del Toro plus Depp, with sfx by ILM.

Atmosphericly creepy, quirky, kinda trippy and visually gorgeous.
