So, at it's bare bones, it's kinda like the arrogant jerk becomes the hero story like Thor, GL, Green Hornet, or Iron Man?

Well I'll still watch it if it looks cool. What are the best Doc Strange books to read?

Also once the metamorphosis into the hero is complete he is definitely a quirky fellow, all that delving in the mystic arts messes with your head a bit.

I think Thor did it well, GH bored me and I passed out halfway, GL had him remain an asstart the whole film and although Iron Man is still technically a bit of a jerk his charisma trumps this.

So long as Marvel takes some chances this will feel like a unique experience.

Im not doubting that Marvel will do it well. Its just that it seems that so many heroes have this jerk ass before powers origin. Not the movie's fault it's just interesting to me

True, but hey, 70% of the people I've encountered in life have been jerks anyways.
What makes a hero is not building on that jerkness once you've got the power to do so.

Isn't the difference with Dr Strange and Iron Man that with Iron Man, although he had a heart injury, he could still potentially go back to manufacturing weapons and doing what he always did, whereas with Strange, his nerve damage to his hands is so severe that he cannot possibly continue with his career? That should be pretty humbling and cause him to rethink his life and maybe even make him suicidal if he puts everything in that. I get the impression that Strange had to seek new enlightenment later on and travel to the East in the hope of making sense of his life.

I think with all of that, Strange would be less likely to remain a jerk than all of the previous characters mentioned. It is almost as if, in order to be the sorcerer supreme, he HAS to undergo a character change and learn to be humble. It's a bit like Thor where he has to be worthy to wield Mjolnir.

Bascically his a cocky world-renowned neurosurgeon who only cares about making money. He gets in a car crash which causes severe nerve damage to his hands preventing him from practicing surgery and ending his career.

He searches the world for a cure to his condition, Strange locates a hermit called the Ancient One in the Himalayas.

The Ancient One refuses to help Strange because of his selfishness, but does sense a good side to Strange which he attempts to bring to the surface.

He fails, but Strange's goodness ignites when he discovers the Ancient One's disciple Baron Mordo is attempting to kill him. After Strange selflessly attempts to thwart the Ancient One's traitorous disciple he is taught the mystic arts and becomes Sorcerer Supreme a master magician.
Maybe just to avoid cliche', I'd save the Ancient One's death for the sequel, and perhaps end the first movie with Strange still learning the ropes. I think Marvel should take a cue from the Harry Potter franchise, and have him develop as a master of the mystic arts, rather than have him anywhere near full power by the end of the first film.

Thats assuming he'll have a sequel. My ideal situatuion would have him, in his first film, at average power in the the first act fighting a Dormammu lacky, do a small backstory in the 2nd act, and have him at full streanth by the 3rd act fighting Dormmamu himself.
Then do more of a "Wolverene" type origin story in his second movie, maybe fighting Mephisto
The idea here is that, athough us fanboys/girls would have the patience for a long backstory for the first film, the general public would want to see action right away.

The JMS from a while ago would make a great blueprint for the first movie in my opinion.

Well Strange was severely depressed after he found out he couldn't be a surgeon anymore. I think perhaps having Strange have a girlfriend with him in the car when he crashes who dies or ends up in a coma or crippled would add a bit of emotional depth perhaps Stephen Strange blames himself and part of the reason he looks for a way to heal his hands is that if he was a surgeon again helping people it would give him some kind of redemption

Not a bad idea. Maybe his hands get damaged in the accident so he can't even use them to open the door to save her, or drag her to safety, making him feel even more helpless.

The only thing about this idea is that it sounds a bit like the pilot to The Incredible Hulk tv series with Banner unable to save his wife in a car accident.

I vote for that guy that was an evil human in transformers 3 and was interested in the character for doctor strange, does anybody knoe his name

I think they should do it as a slightly different kind of movie too, I would like to see a Marvel movie that strayed slightly from the summer blockbuster genre (X2 kind of did this IMO - and look how great that was).
Maybe something a little more derivative, occult and weird this time.

Tangent to this, I also thought an accurate retelling of Ant-Man's origin should be redone as a half-revenge type movie a la Hostel mixed with the 1950s monster serial type movies. His first wife Maria could be killed by HYDRA agents (tying it to Cap) and then when they come after him they use untested Pym particles on him. Thinking him gone they leave from his lab and he has some face off with some ants, then grows back to normal size. Then he takes his formula and uses it to get revenge on the Hydra agents. His anger and feriousity towards them I thought would be a good way to signal he might be a little unhinged, despite a normal outward appearance. Perhaps that could set up the Yellowjacket, spousal abuse for a future film.

they won't do demon in a bottle I doubt they would do Hank slapping Jan.

You have my respect for even knowing Hank Pyms first wife though :D

Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish plan is to have Ant-Man be a spy.

Hmm, sounds like Darkman.

One thing they hit on in the animated Dr. Strange movie that I think should be kept was showing his innate sensitivity to the metaphysical/spiritual/magical forces well before he ever has the accident and goes on his journey. In the cartoon he was already an adult when this was shown but for the movie I think it'd work better if this happened when he was still quite young. Kinda like like Splash! but not as a fantasy rom-com.

i like that. have a potter-esque prologue showcasing a young strange seeing things that other people can't maybe tie to it into his motivation for being a doctor, then flash forward to him as an accomplished neurosurgeon .

im interested to see how the costume will look. so far marvel has changed up all the costumes from the comic counterparts, to a degree.

Is that animated Doc Strange movie a good intro to the character/good in general?

It's a really great cartoon, certainly does the character justice, moreso then some of the more lackluster stories he has been involved in.
Go find yourself a copy and watch it ASAP!

Blackman -You should go to a good comic book store that has a clerk that knows his **** and grab a handful of used Dr. Strange CBs, mostly from the 80's. The clerk should know the best, and/or ones with origin stories.

Good reading,

Mucas

I still haven't watched the animated movie and this is coming from a huge Dr. Strange fan.

I thought the animated movie was ok. Better than most Marvel has made but probably not as good as Planet Hulk or as fun as Hulk Vs. was to me. I'd put it about even with their Ultimate Avengers 1 DVD. It's worth a look.

David copperfield was born to play this role, he can act !
if he can be a magician on stage, he can pull this off
if they want younger
we got this guy angel christ or something

I think tom cruise would be good too but he must be too expensive for crying out loud !

stage magic =/= sorcery.
