Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural

lol I almost made that joke.

I 'unno. The way Bendis writes, Strange might just be in awe of how awesome some C-Lister is, and is better than Strange.

When did Brother Voodoo raise up to the level of C-Lister?

Doctor Voodoo: Avenger Of The Supernatural #2 Preview

Lost, gravely injured and stranded in the low pits of the Everdimensions, Doctor Voodoo is hunted by a brutal living nightmare that holds a festering and contagious self-doubt. Was Jericho given the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme in order to leave our dimension vulnerable to the great evil Agamotto foresees? Or is he the one man with the strength to suppress the coming darkness? The Loas do not listen, the Vishanti cannot answer -- alone Jericho must decide if he is fit to serve. He will soon learn…

The Vampire with the Man-boobs really needed a shirt.

Anyone else read this besides me?! This was a ton of fun! I'd say I liked it more than the first issue. Very well-written and great art, especially during the flashbacks! I'm especially glad to see some stories taking place during his child hood. Really has you more into his mindset and understand the character more. The scene with the old man cursing Jericho as a kid was mighty terrifying. Remender is proving that he's the perfect person to write this character and I applaud the whole team for such a strong and grabbing issue.

Was also great to see Remender showing us Matilda, Jericho's aunt and stuff with his parents. This is the first we've ever even heard or seen anything with the Brother Voodoo's parents.

And more Haitian Vodou references that get a good smile from me. Sobo Kessou, the Loa of Strength which Jericho attempts to summon for help against wild giant demon frogs. Sobo also protects people he's with against wild spirits.

Also, the back up with Dr. Strange was a GREAT touch! Is that a reprint?

I picked this one up along Nova #31,thought it was way better than issue #1.

I didn't read it, but according to my comics guy, people are staying away from it in droves.

Probably just because they're miffed that Strange isn't in the role anymore. Personally, I enjoyed both this issue and the first. I liked that this issue brought Jericho down a bit. While the first seemed to be drilling into our heads that Jericho does things differently from Strange and takes greater risks and is just generally younger, edgier, and more awesome than Strange could ever hope to be, the second shows us the great cost of such recklessness. Plus, the villain of the arc is revealed and I'm looking forward to seeing him more next issue. :)

That's funny. We have one copy left of #2 at the shop I regularly work at. In this and the other store, we sold out of #1 in about 2-3 days. We still have people coming in asking for #1. I also went to 2 other stores I frequent and they sold out in about a day also.

There was only one copy of #2 left at my shop this week, which I snapped up. But I don't know how many copies my shop's owner ordered.

Been looking forward to Immonem drawing Voodoo! Didn't let me down. Dude looks awesome. :word:

What a shame if people are staying away from this awesome book.

Marvel is doing a fantastic job of breathing new life into their 'lesser' characters.

What a great time to be a fan of
Iron Fist
Guardians of the Galaxy
Nova
Captain Britain
Moon Knight
..etc
(I know, some of these have already been 'chopped', but ALL have met with some critical acclaim, and renewed interest in the characters)

Honestly, I personally like this type of book SO much more than the blandness of 'X-team of the month' or 'Mighty New Classic Avengers Forever', or whatever version of their superteams with Spidey and Wolverine that Marvel is boring us with.

Well-written, well-drawn books with strong character moments, and meaningful action (in which any character might be killed off, or suffer lasting consequences) are, IMO, so much more interesting than Civil Secret World Invasion War: Messiah Reign, or whatever 'earth-shaking' cross-over with no net result is happening.

Things is with a lot of readers, if they feel a character is undeserving of any type of spotlight or is "lame" they'll bash the idea and not give it completely a fair shot. For some reason a lot of readers can't seem to give thought that any character could be written well and be a great read, you just need to find the right team for it. For example Alan Moore's Swamp Thing or Peter David writing Layla Miller. Miller was greatly disliked by a ton of readers and bashed the idea of her being in X-Factor. Once Layla disappeared from the title, how many complaints came then?

I get most of my comics thru the mail, so I haven't read #2, yet. I don't understand what's going on with Dr. Strange in #1. He seems way out of character. Doom was pretty badass, but that's about the only thing I liked. Bring back Fear Agent, goddammit!

What was out of character about Strange in #1? He was drawn really badly but otherwise he seemed pretty much normal.

Dr. Strange saying that he's grown predictable and careless over time, and then disappearing after Voodoo tells him to just retire and go off to find the simple joy in living...it just doesn't ring true. He would NEVER go out like that. It goes against years of great stories establishing Strange as someone who is willing and able to defend the Earth, alone if necessary, from countless mysterious and powerful otherworldly threats. It's his purpose in life!

It was his purpose in life because the entities who select the Sorcerer Supreme decided it was and he had faith in their selection. Now the Eye of Agamotto has abandoned him and selected someone else. He trained Jericho, tried to help him, found their methods clashed too much, and went off to enjoy his retirement, secure in his faith that the Vishanti, Agamotto, and whoever else is involved in selecting Sorcerers Supreme knew what they were doing when they chose Jericho this time. Seemed fine to me.
