Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread - Part 19

I stopped watching Doctor Who when David Tennant left, it wasn't that I didn't think I'd still enjoy the series it was just that I had a reason to jump off. Anyway with the new special been a superhero one of course I watched it and I loved it. The Superman references were heavy and that was probably where my main enjoyment came from.

I loved that they used John Byrne's work on Superman , including the
coloured version of this:

I belong to a Facebook group of John Byrne fans and plenty of them picked up on the use of his legendary Superman run.

Nice touch Doctor !

Never really cared much for Justin Chatwin, but he gave a solid Michael J. Fox vibe in this one which I'm totally digging.

Damn, I have a bad feeling that this show is starting to pass me by. I don't have an ounce of excitement for the new season from the very little that was shown - which possibly isn't fair.

Can i openly say it? I actually think Capaldi has been a massive disappointment.

I actually quite like Capaldi. I feel like he's carrying what they give him very well.

But as some folks mentioned a page back, they haven't done a very good job differentiating him. He's kind of a generic Doctor, with no quirks or standout attributes.

They've tried with some weird things--the guitar, the sunglasses--the one that works best for me is the index cards for emotions.

But I do like how he seems to be more of a realist than Smith was.

I wouldn't blame Capaldi, but I'd agree his turn has been underwhelming so far.

The solo episode where he was trapped (serious episode after Clara's death) was the best.

A shame as he should be an awesome Doctor, but the writers have not been doing him many favors so far.

I mean, last season wasn't the best in terms of writing.

But god damn did Capaldi act out some of those scenes.

I feel the same way.

When they showed the season 10 tease, it did absolutely nothing for me. I don't like Nardole at all, and it looks like he will have a big role. Bill looks incredibly annoying. There just wasn't anything there looked interesting.

For me the show peaked at season 5 and I have been getting less interested with each season.

I think he's been fine. Just hasn't been given a whole lot to work with compared to the others. When he is though, he's absolutely fantastic.

I stopped watching Dr Who after Peter Davison left the show, so nearly 30 years ago.

But, when the show restarted I took a small interest and watched a few episodes.

I didn't like David Tennant (found him too bug eyed and manic) but found Matt Smith enjoyable - Capaldi has been great IMO, and that episode you mention where he's trapped in the confession dial for 4 billion years, was truly amazing.

Capaldi hasn't been bad but he has not really stood out either. I agree it is more on the writing than the acting. There have been a few okay stories and the X-Mas episode was fine but I haven't got the enthusiasm for this next season like I used to. Nardole I find interesting but Bill seems like just another (slightly annoying) companion who did not impress me. Have to wait for an episode or two before I settle on it.

Heavent Sent really was an outstanding episode. Just watched it again a few days ago, brilliant.

Capaldi should be great. Moffat should have left years ago. He's dreadful.

I wish when Who does a show set in America, they had the ability to shoot it in America with a cast of American actors. I'm recalling several times such as "Daleks in Manhattan" and "A Town Called Mercy" along with this new special, where the Doctor go stateside to fight some aliens, and there's maybe one American actor and a bunch of Brits pretending to be American. I get why that is, I know there's logistics, but given how popular the show is in the U.S. (to a degree the old series never was), it would be nice if "let's fly out and do an adventure state-side" could be a regular thing.

I was initially excited about him being the showrunner, but that sore of wore off after the first couple of seasons.

New showrunner can't get here fast enough.

Didn't they already do some shoots in the US for the Matt Smith seasons? I don't think they can logistically shoot a whole arc there other than maybe some location and exterior shots. Remember, this is still a BBC TV series. They probably don't have an unlimited budget and financing.

Also, Daleks in Manhattan was set in 1930s New York. You probably couldn't feasibly have shot that in present day New York anyway.

I vaguely recall something like that, but I don't remember the specifics.

True, but I still notice all the fake accents.

The Angels episode had Smith and the Ponds in Central Park for a good ten minutes. Then Smith runs to read a book at the end and cries because oh no he can't go back to get them unless he goes there a year or two later and takes a taxi to collect them but that's a thing that can't be talked about because EMOTIONAL EXIT!!

Same here. Season 9 bluray I have are untouched. I still haven't gotten past the first episode.

I've seen season clips like Clara's demise and the new sonic screwdriver

Haven't seen rivers Christmas special nor this one.

The long waits have drained my interest.

I'd rather go back and watch "midnight" from season 4

They did an episode or two where they shot some scenes with the Doctor, Amy, and Rory out west in the desert.

Just watched the Christmas episode. Pretty cute with the superheroes and comic book references.

Just started watching the animated episodes for the reconstruction of the Troughton episodes for POWER OF THE DALEKS....looks cool.

I enjoyed the Christmas special. I actually found it to be the best episode of Capaldi's run. It was fun, the characters were endearing, stakes felt high and there was a nice emotional subplot with River that gave the Doctor some growth without being too on the nose. In fact, the Doctor was actually likable in this episode. He was crotchety without being annoying. He was quirky without trying too hard (which is how it feels with the sunglasses and guitar). Even the sushi gag and him constantly eating worked well, because unlike the sunglasses, guitar, and other quirks that the tried to give 12, there was no bit that basically felt like the writers saying "Look at how quirky he is!" Instead it was subtle. I feel like this was the best written portrayal of Capaldi's Doctor and I hope now that the writers have found the right balance for him it continues into the next season.

Matt Lucas's addition did not annoy me as much as I thought. In fact, I look forward to him as a companion now more than I do Bill (whose voice is simply atrocious). I'd honestly be okay with a season of the Doctor and Lucas's character just going on adventures without a regular companion. I think that would be far more satisfying than Bill, who seems to have nothing extraordinary about her. She feels like an interchangeable, generic, companion.

I'm wish he would have stayed longer than the standard three seasons. I'll miss him.

Capaldi has confirmed this is his last season. I wish he'd stop calling himself "Doctor Who". Being such a big fan, you'd think he know.

Not a shock with the new show runner coming on board to be honest. Now we have to suffer through the female and black rumours yet again though.

Followed by the half-assed outrage when they announce the new Doctor and said rumours turn out to be false, probably.

Capaldi had a good run. Three seasons seems to be a good limit. I will be curious to see what a new showrunner and Doctor actor will bring to the table.
