Dreamworks/Paramount's Ghost In The Shell - Part 2

So, are we ranking entertainment journalists by their appearance now? Who's next, Jon Schnepp?

Hoo boy, I'm sorry you saw Dirty Grandpa. The trailers were enough for me to stay far away from that movie. :funny:

In regards to the spoiler:

In my opinion, ScarJo is merely the shell of that person, and a ghost can live in any shell, which means a ghost can really take any form no matter how different it is. A shell with a completely different appearance from the ghost? That's a plot twist, especially when the trailers showcased that a big core of the film would be about the Major discovering her past that's being hidden from her.

Now, if the film showed a flashback of the Major's ghost as a little girl (before she died), said she was Asian, and then cast a young white girl, then I can completely see how bad that would be. I hope the film didn't do that, because ... Well ... What were they thinking?! That would be both offensive and just an underwhelming way of storytelling.

I'm sorry too :oldrazz: I unfortunately didn't see a trailer and was dragged to see it.

Apparently they don't show the little girl's face. Can't confirm since I haven't personally seen it yet.

Race change isn't an issue for me, but I'm not a fan how they handled it in this particular case. Kind of half measure and it's actually laughable if you think about it. And I'm not a fan of how they changed Major's origin and made her so special and exceptional.

Same, as much as I would have wanted them to cast an Asian-American lead I can understand enough studio politics to appreciate why they cast Johansson. The problem lies in the execution.

What you hope the film didn't do, it didn't. That's whey there is no issue. It's a great treatment in my opinion. It's very natural and really turns the controversy on it's head, because it IS an american adaptation. It actually had the balls to play with that idea in the film, and I appreciate that.

Does it though? It's still set in Japan, and there's next to none Japanese people beyond expendable henchmen. If it was set in America I would buy it, but in it's current form it just doesn't seem like anything else but a cop out for them to cast a white lead.

Also, this anime issh does nothing for me, even sexy anime. I have no attachment to the original. Nevah gave a damn about Akira either. Every once in a while, death note is good to sit through, for the most part, but meh.

The amount of decent anime I can count on one hand, personally.

GiTS
Akira
Sky Blue
Appleseed

After that not much else, I struggle to get into the series stuff.

They do
and her real mother is involved, who is also cast asian, and who does a WONDERFUL job in the role. I found it to be heartbreaking, and touching.
This whole angle made the movie a win for me personally. I can see a divide in audience, but I'm just telling you how I felt about it.

Have you never seen Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo? Or did you just not think much of them? Because if you haven't, I'd definitely recommend them.

Glad to hear! Since it just came out there's a lot of conflicting reports. I'm seeing it next Monday and will talk some more after. I'm not excited for anything else beyond the gorgeous visuals, but I'm open for it surprise me.

Love how the RT score is dropping by the hour. Wonder how low it can go.

It's not necessarily set in "Japan". It's so far into a future of it's own, it could be an entirely different continent for all that's presented in the film. As the audience, we just assume it's set in Japan. It's actually filmed in New Zealand and built from there. The culture within the film is very Japanese yes. That could be taken many different ways though. Because of the rise of technology, Japanese culture could have over run America. There are things left unanswered and theres a deep, rich world presented on screen. These types of things are done on purpose to set the film in a world of it's own. It becomes timeless.

The cast is extremely diverse, Australian, African-American, English, it's not just "white people". This is the aspect that made me wonder... Is this Japan? Or is it a perfect unity of race and high tech culture? Next to all of the henchmen, there are 3 major Japanese roles in the film, in which they are pivotal to the story. I'm not sure where you're getting your info.

O hell naw. As someone who watched over 100 anime properties, this is nothing beside GiTS and Akira who are cult classics around the world. There are so many not decent, but amazing properties just waiting to be adapted just waiting on shelf somewhere.

Rurouni Kenshin is not only amazing manga/anime adaptation, but also movie trilogy. You should check it out, both anime and movie adaptation.
But Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion. You should check it out if you want to try to get into anime stuff. And that's just tip of the iceberg, then we go Trigun, Berserk, Full Metal Alchemist (both adaptations) etc.

No keep hearing good things about Cowboy so need to check that out at some point.

Im sure there is other good stuff out there but it seems a lot of stuff is a very aquired taste and you have to wade through a lot of hentai to get to something decent

Yeah, It's always best to go in with the lowest expectations haha. Like I mentioned I see this splitting audiences, and fans. I'm a fan, and I LOVED it. I went in with medium expectation. I didn't expect garbage, but I was genuinely worried. As I started watching the film.. I wasn't feeling it. It wasn't clicking with me right away. It starts off pretty rocky... but just keeps getting better in my opinion. It pulls you in, and it left me with a very satisfying feeling.

I HOPE more people see it and actually like it. I think it deserves a sequel, but if not, oh well. I understand.

Cowboy Bebop and Berserk are worth watching. I also find Serial Experiments Lain, Samurai Champloo, Hellsing interesting. Overall, for me anime ended somewhere in early 00s.

There's a lot of great horror anime ripe for adapting too. It's just about finding screenwriters adventurous enough to write something loyal to the material but also filmable.

Didnt watch to many horror anime. But if I wanted something gory, horror, psyhological, I would certainly want R-rated Elfen Lied. :gngl:

lol. Most of the anime I'd recommend Hollywood to adapt either feature blatantly western premise/characters or the concepts seem like they could still work under our sensibilities.

Now...if we're talking tv, literally any anime is good to go.

manga/anime has so many subgenres. Like "shoujo" (for girl), "shounen" (for boy), "seinen" (for men), and "josei" (for women). And every type of those anime is different and it's made for it's particular demographic. I am fan of shounen and seinen genre in particular. And most of them I listed before does belong into those genres. And then you go further and you have action, romance, mecha, psyhological, supernatural, horror or whatever subcategory of what type of series or anime movies you want to watch.

I dont think hentai it's even subgenre. It's more like with movies, you have adult porn movies. You will find it only if you are looking for it.

still unsure.

I think Randolph is horrible at her job. And not because she didn't like a movie that doesn't look very good to me. I just don't think that she is an insightful critic or is good at talking about entertainment news. And she also does this cool girl schtick where she desperately tries to find common ground with sexist bros who follow her.

best part is when grace criticized wonder woman's hair for not having enough bounce i kid you not:o

I just went from seeing the movie, it was ok, not amazing but fine, it laked a compelling villain thought but from what I remember from the source material, this movie did good.
To give some context: I saw the anime movie in theater in the 90' and SAC TV show, I never read the comics.

So asking those people who didn't like the film - for a layperson, is this movie at least better than or at the level of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the first two Hobbit films? I sat through those duds in the theatre, and am deciding whether this is worth using up some gift card credit for the eyecandy.

I'm somewhat familiar with the GITS property but haven't watched the anime or the entirety of the '95 film, nor have I read the manga. The visuals and Weta's work in the live-action are certainly alluring though, even if the dialogue seems flat.

Saw this movie. I enjoyed it. It is NOT the anime, and that is fine. I prefer the set up for the Major in SAC, but Scarlett does kind of sell this set up. The visuals were fine, but I think Sanders was trying a bit too hard to recreate stuff from the anime, to the detriment of his own story.

I'm down for a sequel, with more focus on Section 9. Really wish we got more of the full team, besides Batou. The little bit of the team dynamic we saw was pretty good.
