Don't have much of a desire to see this in theaters, but I'll certainly check it out at some point when it's available on Netflix or Amazon Prime.
One of my friends, who is a big fan of the original movie, saw this film last night and said he loved it. *shrug*
I'm not trusting the critics on this one, to be honest. Considering the "controversy," I bet a lot of critics felt compelled to write bad reviews ... Just like how all of their positive reviews for the truly, painfully awful Ghostbusters remake seemed like they had guns held to their heads to say what they said.
Also, Grace Randolph is a dimwit. One of my least favorite film critics on YouTube.
Ghostbusters is a movie. One I think it is good. But if you think that is painful awful, I am happy you have only see great films throughout your life.
If Ghostbusters had got amazing reviews there might be some truth to that, but the reviews are very middle of the road, just like the film. It wasn't horrible, but neither was it memorable or needed. Women who starred on that film got insane hate for it, so I really don't see how anyone could consider those "meh" reviews as the worst thing to come out of the whole thing.
GitS though, the "controversy" is well deserved. I haven't seen the film yet but I've seen the spoilers and this **** is downright offensive. I don't have a problem with Death Note, but they definitely crossed the line here and made something wildly stupid.
I personally like Grace, even if I disagree with her on every second film. She's very opinionated and has some weird ideas so I understand why she would get on people's nerves.
I personally don't think Ghostbusters was "middle of the road." I thought it was garbage. It's tied with BvS for my least favorite movie of 2016. I thought that both films held the utmost contempt for the properties they were adapting/using. Just ... Gaaaah. I hated it with every fiber of my being.
I read about the spoiler. Nope, it doesn't offend me. In fact, it was a spoiler I was predicting from the very beginning (especially considering the source material). Maybe the movie will make it come across the wrong way once I actually see it, but just reading it as is? Nope. Not offensive to me.
I don't like Grace because she comes across as someone who THINKS she's smart. She annoys me.
I think Randolph is horrible at her job. And not because she didn't like a movie that doesn't look very good to me. I just don't think that she is an insightful critic or is good at talking about entertainment news. And she also does this cool girl schtick where she desperately tries to find common ground with sexist bros who follow her.

I keep on forgetting who she is. Because her videos show up in my recommends and for some reason she doesn't look like a Grace to me. I clicked on one of her reaction videos for BatB... big mistake.

I can appreciate that! For me it was just boring and uninspired, but I've seen worse, like Dirty Grandpa that was my least favorite from last year.
The spoiler in question was something I dreaded was coming, but didn't expect them to actually go with it. They made the Major Japanese, without actually having to cast an Japanese actress for the lead. The problem here is that Hollywood does next to zero films with Asian-American leads, and this one would have been the perfect opportunity. What makes the matter "offensive" for me, is that they apparently adapted every fiber of Asian culture from the original down to art style, location and philosophy, and yet filled the film with tons of non-Asian characters. That's just old-Hollywood style cultural appropriation, and I can't understand how that's still a thing. It's so dumb and badly written, and makes the film inherently worse for me.

That's absolutely the worst thing about her. She's trying to sell her channel to both meninist bros and feminists, and that's not gonna work. I think big part of that is just her trying to be a little bit defensive after years of being a target of online bullying for being a female entertainment journalist. She deserves her criticism, but I mean the specific kind of trolling that her comment section used to be full off.
Also, this anime issh does nothing for me, even sexy anime. I have no attachment to the original. Nevah gave a damn about Akira either. Every once in a while, death note is good to sit through, for the most part, but meh.

She is straight up unprofessional. She pushed the idea that the negative reviews of BvS were a smear campaign and accused people of being paid off by Disney (John Campea among them).
I did not take her seriously after that. She shouldn't be taken seriously.
I know enough about the movie to trash it. I didn't complain about others liking it. People can like whatever they want. Apparently there's a crapton of people, who disliked the film. More than those who liked it.

I like Akira, but that is one of those rare times I prefer the manga. I really like anime, but for what it is, if that makes sense. Outside of stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo I don't see a lot of super high quality stuff. But I will still watch Goku fight an impossibly strong foe, Shinji fight the need to sleep with his co-pilots or the brothers of Full Metal Alchemist do their thing.
I don't think that most moviegoers give two ****s about the white washing thing when it's an adaptation of an anime. If GITS disappoints at the domestic box office it's because of lack luster trailers and marketing, in general, that was never enticing. Also I maintain that hard, heady, weird sci fi is a tough sale in North America unless the film is directed by Nolan.
By that definition there's nothing offensive in the world.

Hoo boy, I'm sorry you saw Dirty Grandpa. The trailers were enough for me to stay far away from that movie.
In regards to the spoiler:
In my opinion, ScarJo is merely the shell of that person, and a ghost can live in any shell, which means a ghost can really take any form no matter how different it is. A shell with a completely different appearance from the ghost? That's a plot twist, especially when the trailers showcased that a big core of the film would be about the Major discovering her past that's being hidden from her.
Now, if the film showed a flashback of the Major's ghost as a little girl (before she died), said she was Asian, and then cast a young white girl, then I can completely see how bad that would be. I hope the film didn't do that, because ... Well ... What were they thinking?! That would be both offensive and just an underwhelming way of storytelling.
Race change isn't an issue for me, but I'm not a fan how they handled it in this particular case. Kind of half measure and it's actually laughable if you think about it. And I'm not a fan of how they changed Major's origin and made her so special and exceptional.

Laughing at people who are disappointed and frustrated.

Waited for it to get on Netflix. Thought it was quite funny. The cast was good, especially McKinnon, though they botched the third act by cutting it down.
