As a gamer, i will support this film too no end.

LOK'TAR O'GAR!

CGI and the sepia color grading looks mostly terrible and jarring where it doesn't blend with the humans. But I'll still go see it for Ragnar.

Well I'm supporting Ragnar.

No matter the time, it is about the money. Competing for quality man hours. With someone like ILM, they have a lot of teams and they vary a bit in quality. Star Wars will have significantly less post-production, but it will no doubt have better CGI.

Yeah, Star Wars and Marvel probably get the A and B teams due to Disney synergy. This is getting a C team, other than the Orcs, which is sad because there were all those articles around production where ILM reps intimated that they had something to prove with this movie, that though they are the masters with space scifi effects, they need to prove that they can compete with Weta and co in the fantasy realm. The backgrounds in this have that characteristic CGI haze, from the overuse of bloom type lighting effects, that I can't stand. Another part of the problem is that they are too slavish to the WoW cartoony art style. The humans' weapons and armor, despite being made for real, just looks too artificial and fake. They were too obviously over the top video game designs that are in too pristine of condition.

I mean even ILM's shoddiest stuff is still better than a lot that's out there, maybe barring WETA.

every big movie in the last 5 years had at least 4 CGI companies working on the effects. ILM is not doing all the effects for this movie.

I think the filmmakers, and not the CGI companies, are responsible for the overall look of the movie. I'm sure ILM and other companies are doing the effects based on the directions they were given, and of course budget has a lot to do with it as well.

Can't wait for this. I just hope people give this a fair chance if it is a good movie and dont write it off because it's based on a game or isn't a Middle-earth movie in this genre. I've always preferred the WC Orc design to the ME ones.

True, but this isn't the usual case of them having a tight post-production period with a lot of last minute changes. They have had 20 months of post-production with this film and Duncan Jones doesn't seem to be the Peter Jackson/George Lucas type who is constantly changing the film. And doesn't this movie have huge budget?

It sort of looks like a movie made out of those Full motion videos you used to see on games. Not necessarily a compliment.

The only reference to budget at the moment can be found here, where it states over 100 million dollars: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/warner-bros-legendary-end-talks-574236

It most likely doesn't take in consideration the marketing, but 100 million is like less than what movies like Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy had. Not by a whole bunch, but still I would take that into consideration that I think both Universal and Legendary have a reasonable budget on the 1st attempt at Warcraft.

If it is $100m, we saw all the money shots already.

The whole thing and the A and B teams is mostly true, (California, London, maybe Canada.). Most likely, Jones had to deal with the teams in Singapore or whatever. They're talented but not as disciplined.

Also, it looks like ILM is sharing duties with Rodeo and Hybride for the CGI work, and that's a tough thing to do. Because the key thing is consistency per every effects house. I know that there's CGI superveriors but when you have too many companies involved, each with their own levels of quality, things WILL be inconsistent.

I rewatced the trailer on a bigger monitor. The scenery is actually nice until you see the Orcs. Now, there were no scenes where I went 'Oh crap that looks real' like how I reacted to Gollum or Davey Jones. The Orc baby kinda killed it. In no way is the CGI on the Orc Baby done. I refuse to believe that.

That's not the way to speak about the Orc Moses! :p

Yeah, I agree. No way Thrall is done.

I can't believe they'd actually show that shot in the trailer. It's so painfully bad.

As someone who played WoW since Vanilla all the way to MoP and played the Warcraft games all I have to say is that I'm far beyond stoked to see this.

And I honestly dont get the complaints from people on the CG, I grew up watching movies with awful effects and seeing Azeroth come to life is far more enthralling to me than the CG. Unless its X-men Origins bad then most people sound like whiny babies on the CG.

I think there are whiny babies, but even the most respected critic I like (Jordan Hoffman) made a joke on twitter about how Warcraft looks like a movie that was made 6 years before Cameron's Avatar.

Agreed, at that part it sort of looks like a Shrek film, perhaps they should have just done a full animated movie instead. The CG and the real actors just dont match up and dont feel as though they are inhabiting the same space. Now that doesnt mean it will be a "bad" film just because of the CG being iffy of course but at the moment its reminding me of the Star Wars prequels with so much obvious green screen.

Yeah, I don't mind the cg. My issues were the trailer are basically that the orcs compared to the humans look like cartoons (though they look great in stills) and the fact that there is no mystery or suspense to the trailer what so ever. It's like they felt the need to show too much in the first trailer. It feels more like the second or third trailer. I can see fans of the game enjoying the trailer but as someone not really familiar with it the trailer just came across as generic as hell.

The part when the good Orcs meet up with the humans in the valley looks weird, especially the shot wide shot of them walking towards each other. It's like a bunch of actors meeting up with a bunch of cartoons.

And the upclose shot of the Orc saying 'to help our people' is...not impressive. I think most people are forgiving when the CG is a work in progress but when Jones and company are telling people 'oh the movie's pretty much done', it'll get a bad reaction. I think that's why I'm so hash on the CG after they made comments like that. And I know Jones is better than that.

And yeah, there's no build-up, no voice over to explain WHAT this world. People who don't know Warcraft won't know where this will take place at all, or how it's actually the human world that's getting invaded. There's no narrative through-line.

serious question. hollywood likes 100 sequels and a big universe.

could the first warcraft movie be adapted with less characters? for example its good drama when two orcs talk. but there is always a big group of orcs in a lot of shots. this is very expensive.
