Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 1

Despite Jones saying the movie is done done, the VFX work and polish will continue all the way up to release, that's how it works. Several VFX artists or people in the movie industry said so on Reddit, it's how it works. It's all going to keep evolving. It's great that Star Wars is being released in December, it gives them 7 extra months.

That's if the date doesn't shift. You have to actually pay for that additional 7 months work, it's not already budgeted into the costs.

I think I could end up enjoying this. Will have to see more footage. But I am interested.

I'm not a gamer AT ALL. I've heard of Warcraft, but I've never seen the game or anything.

The CGI in this trailer looks like a cartoon. Or...it actually reminds me of the look of video game commercials (I assume the footage in commercials are in the actual games??). This might have been intentional...so that parts of the movie look like a game. I'm not sure that would be a good idea...and I really hope that they improve the look of the film before they release the film. The whole thing looked kinda cheap.

The story bits didn't pull me in AT ALL.

At the moment, this is a Netflix for me. It's a shame, because I really like Duncan Jones.

Yeah, nothing about the story really makes me believe like I have to see this. I can see maybe it appealing to fans, but I'm not even much of a fan of Warcraft and know very little about the world and lore.

^ Or better yet, I wish Blur studios would make a full length film. They've been responsible for many of the best game animatics including all of the Star Wars:Kotor Ads and a lot of the Arkham game trailers.

They've actually done some feature film work including the opening of James Cameron's Avatar with the space scenes as well as the prologue to Thor the Dark World.

They've been trying to get an animated film of Goon started up I know.

This. I thought the trailer looked like a video game cut scene. I'll probably end up redboxing this one.

I secretly hope Ben Foster's Medivh is like Jake Mazursky from Alpha Dog.

Avatar looked like a video game and it brought in some money, Warcraft could do the same. Maybe Warcraft will even have an interesting story and interesting characters to go with the CGI.

Some. :woot:

Well, it's interesting that Avatar got a pass on those blue aliens. Maybe because production values were extremely good overall. Besides, at that time, even after Gollum, it was still something fresh.

The only difference between Avatar and this, is that Avatar looked alien and unique whereas your average joe schmoe off the street might see the trailer and thing its a Hobbit ripoff (or maybe Rings).

Also Avatar was from the director of Titanic and Terminator 2 and it came out at the end of the year. I don't see the comparisons myself.

C'mon honorable savage people has been done to the death, they simply had blue skin and looked kitty like. :p

I like Duncan Jones so I was interested in this film despite never playing Warcraft, but this film looks absolutely terrible based on that first trailer.

While i'm excited for this, Avatar's effects looked more impressive, they still do in fact.

the technology to simulate lighting and surfaces from close up advanced a lot and you can see that they used new effects. but the design.....it doesnt work IMO.

Yeah I think CGI companies need to work on lighting. I saw a video game demo with experimental lighting creating with an artificial sun hitting a building, and wow it was amazingly realistic.

Isn't the problem the lighting used while filming? Remember, they only did two days of on location. They have to match up with the artificial lighting used on set, which itself would probably be pretty bad, at least at mimicking real lighting.

It's a combination of director, cinematographers, and CG supervisors not working together.

IF you notice in the scenes with the humans, the source of the lights hitting the actors are weird. It's all backlighting. Like where is the light coming from, if the background's dimly lit or whatever. Is there a glass ceiling above them?

...at a certain point, just make it an animated movie.

I agree that it is a combination of problems, but as you pointed out with the human scenes. That feels like an onset lighting issue.

This was a mistake. What I meant to say is they did two days on location shooting. Everything else was on sound stages and green screen.

Oh, okay. My bad.
I still feel like your point stands. If you aren't going to make the vast majority of the world real, what is the point? It is like the prequels all over again.
