Duncan Jones' Warcraft - Part 3

How does this bode for Cameron's Avatar sequels? I want them to do well, but if a fully CGI world with strange critters tanks like this - could Cameron's rep save them?
I don't think they will do as well, 3D is falling off, international currency losing its value, but it seems they have a real fan following. So I'd think a billion WW for each was be the floor. Cameron just knows what he is doing.

Warcraft is a video game property that has already been waning in popularity for the last several years.

I know people wanted this to be the film that changed course for video games, but it just didn't do any of that. Avatar really has nothing to do with how this film is viewed. Other than that they both have a lot of CG and motion captured actors.
First thing is first. Make a good movie.

A few pages ago, I suggested less adherence to overall continuity and more picking the good stuff and formulating a movie from that. A CBM approach, as opposed to what you'd do adapting something like Tolkien or Potter.

@Vile: I was looking at how both Warcraft and Avatar have a fantastic secondary world as the similarity between the two.

I don't know, based on what I read about the lore, this film changed quite a bit.

Assuming it isn't a critical disaster I could see Avatar 2 clearing a billion but nothing beyond that, unless it's got TDK-level quality/WOM.

The market for these types of films should be South Korea. The only mass appeal games I can think of state side would possibly be Zelda. Mario or Donkey Kong would be too cheesy and would have to be oriented towards kids, who don't even know those characters unless they are still playing the Wii games, which is waning in popularity I feel.

Warcraft should have been bigger than what it is, but it just wasn't a very good film. This is not bringing back the fantasy genre, although a sequel could be merited if the overseas gross is good enough.

But seriously, the most popular video games here in the US are EA Sports and Star Wars games. You don't need to make a movie about that obviously. That and Star Wars games, so uh, no expanded market that isn't already there. Resident Evil has already had a long running franchise.

If I were a studio exec, I am looking at GTA. Maybe Elder Scrolls once Warcraft and LotR fade away. Zelda will get made eventually. Nintendo just needs to greenlight and we will have a film. Let's see what the rest of the box office run looks like before we nail the coffin.

PS: Wow, I didn't realized this thing has grossed 150 million in China. This is intriguing because I don't think we have ever seen a discrepancy between domestic and foreign box office like this for a 150 million dollar production.

Doubtful. Maybe if the international box office was good enough to save the movie in spite of the domestic. But Warcraft just had several factors that helped it greatly in China.

Unless China starts providing 400 million in ticket sales i doubt we need a discussion.

Pokemon. It's already happening.

I don't know anyone who doesn't know Mario or Donkey Kong. They're transcended beyond video games. They're iconic. Its' like I don't need to watch any cartoons to know who Mickey Mouse is.

Yeah it's also weird that some of the trades are overlooking at how China splits its profits with the studios, which is what..only 25 percent..and how sometimes China even lags with the $$$ to the studios.

That isn't a good number after how it opened in China. That is a crazy drop off.
Yep the total is good but for a film that opened so massively you'd think it would at least hit 300mil.

The production company makes a sequel at their own risk.

It's a situation where if China is the only country where it's profitable, they won't greenlight any sequels. If it were a case where it was a big hit in China and other countries across Europe, Asia, S. America, etc (anywhere but the US), then they may consider a sequel. I think that's why PAC Rim 2 is getting one, but that's an anomaly.

I still think there is a good chance for a sequel. But considering the bulk of the gross has come from China, that gross has dropped of, and apparently Wanda is handing out free tickets to see this film in their theaters (inflating that box office), this movie isn't going to be profitable.

The appeal of Warcraft was definitely overestimated. They didn't make a story that audiences were really able to digest.

If they made it anymore simplistic it would have been paint-by-numbers.

Looking at the domestic box office and the drop off...maybe Legendary shouldnt have even bothered releasing it in the US.:hehe:
