Anyone find it funny that some of the highest grossing films comes out on Dec. 18th? Like Avatar and now Star Wars.

Will have seen it twice by the end of today, and going for at least a third time next couple of days. I think it will hit 2 billion by the end of its run. Which will be awesome!

This is the time of arthouse films and Oscar contenders,

So, when some good old fashioned mainstream popular fare comes ou,t the public eats it up.

Jurassic World didn't get to keep its record very long. Oh well, no hard feelings because Disney hired Colin Trevorrow to direct episode 9 anyway.

Just saw that the movie now is on track for 238-244 OW and that it didn't break the Saturday record of JW. I am surprised that it didn't break the Saturday record.

I'm not. Jurassic World opened up during the summer movie season. Star Wars opened up during the holidays when people are still traveling and getting shopping done. It's a bit of a busier time of the year. It should still clean up next weekend though.

I fully anticipate the biggest second weekend in history. Half of the pre-sale tickets were for next week. Christmas is the biggest movie day of the year. It is going to make a ton next weekend. Well over $100m imo.

Makes sense to me. So many people saw it yesterday, there have to be some give. The big question is Sunday. Travel, shopping and then Star Wars in the evening?
I finished my shopping tonight, I travel tomorrow, no SW in the evening.
Hopefully, next weekend with the family though.

While I just figured it would break like ever first day or week kind of record. I wonder if it will break the second weekend record. Could it make like 140 on its second weekend?

Half the presale tickets after for the second weekend, and Friday is Christmas. It wil break the second weekend record. I am pretty sure about it.

What is that record? Any changes this movie can do 1 billion in just the USA? What about WW record? I saw china is jan 9 by like jan 16th we will have first 7 days in china and the movie will have been out for almost a month ever where else. I think by then we should have a better idea of if the WW record can be changed or not.

Imagine what the movie would have done if it opened in May... It will be very interesting to see what Episode VIII does at the box office in 2017.

I'm actually wondering what's going to happen to Rogue One now. I'm wondering if TFA has just given people that Star Wars fever causing many to show up at Rogue One in droves but then I'm wondering if that will affect EP8.

I guess it's completely dependent on the quality of Rogue One.

Rogue one might perform like Iron Man 3 did with respect to getting a big bump from the franchise film that came right before it.

Ep.VIII however might play out like AoU especially if reviews are not as positive as TFA and there might be somewhat of a drop along with potential hype burnout.

VIII will see a drop. A big one, the same way Empire did. But it will still be top 10 if it reviews well. Might even claim a top 5 spot because of the large international market.

I believe the record is $106m set by JW last year.

Here is a list of the records if you are curious: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/

Iron Man 3 also had RDJ and his Iron Man is arguably the biggest driver of the Marvel franchise. I think with Rogue One, we'll get a better understanding of the wider, franchise appeal of Star Wars. Especially if it's a movie sans the jedi, sith, the original cast, BB8, Poe, Rey and Finn.

I think Vader is going to be in Rogue One, plus we will have the classic Stormtroopers. If they are going to sell classic Vader in action in Rogue One, they are making a billion easy.

Oh, it's set between Episode III and IV.

OH. That's money locked on right there. And it has Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen. China market conquered confirmed.

Yes, it takes place right before Episode IV.
