Comics Fans Who Continue to Buy. WHY?

You say that I would 'sit back and do nothing?'

No. I asked if you would sit back and do nothing.

We're not talking about something as serious as drugs, man. We're talking about pieces of paper. My friend is a recovering drug user...so I know what to do. I didn't sit back and do nothing...I supported him in whatever I could do for him. This is not the same!

And I re-iterated that I'm aware that it's only a fictional character. I was trying to explain how to long time fans, the slow destruction of something you love could be comparable to a friend's drug use. It may sound ridiculous to some, but that's what it feels like to me.

I'm just putting my voice across. There are more important things than comic books you know. all i'm saying is that I will still continue to buy spiderman because its still spiderman.

Exactly my point. There are more important things that SPENDING MONEY on comic books. The thread is about why someone would shell out their hard earned cash for no other reason than "just because it's Spidey". I could take a crap in an empty bag of Dorito's and sell it to you because I know how much you love Dorito's, and you'd still buy it because it has the Dorito's logo on the front? Cause, brother, that is what a Spider-Man comic is right now. A LOGO on some paper with crap inside. It's not Spider-Man.

How long have you been reading Spidey, if I may ask?

big difference.

when your friend is self-destructing, you react. you tell him "you can't go on like this" or whatever.

in the case of Spidey, you're doing very much the opposite by still buying it. it's as if your friend was getting wasted and you didn't even say anything. a true friend would react, even if it means tough love (ie quit buying a crappy book).

Wait, so are you argreeing with me?

lol.

Since I was 4.

And I know...I should love the spider-mna who I grew up with. The troubled teen. But I look to those issues now more than the recent ones coz thats where I am at this point in my life. I'm 17. I see a bit of Peter in myself everyday. Heck, i'm even CALLED Peter Parker in college- my nickname! But the 'teacher' peter is the new peter. We can't stick with the old all the time...

its true that the 'true essence' of Spider-man is 'gone' nowadays- but that's what happens. I myself dont want to read these comics because in some ways i feel that 'peter is growing up too fast' for me...but I can't change what the writers do.

We can moan all we want about wanting things to change...but we've got change- whether we like it or not. If things remained the same then bordem will ensue.

Basically I read the 40-odd years of Teen Spidey more than the recent ones because I identify more with the teen spider-man than the teacher.

Possibly in a few years i'll re-read the recent ones.

That's the beauty of Peter...he changes...sometimes with us, sometimes without.

But he'll always be a part of us.

We are all Peter Parker.

Just in a different time frame.

here's the thing: there CAN be change without altering the soul of the character. stuff like Peter becoming a teacher, marrying MJ, etc. something that could actually happen in his life, because remember, Peter's supposed to be the guy we can all connect with. he's supposed to be the hero people can most relate to.

it's when they starting making those changes purely for shock value that things go downhill. stuff like the Clone Saga and SPECIALLY The Other. not to mention the changes that forget the character's history just so it can fit their story, like Sins Past and Peter's ridiculous choice in Civil War.

I honestly cannot understand what goes through JQ's sick little brain when he says that Peter being married to a model isn't relatable, then goes on to do some crap like The Other...

if that's the best you have in what your definition of wit is, then i feel sorry for you. As for not buying the comic, if you had any respect for the character, you would not buy it. The whole zombie/battered woman mentality some of you have about needing to buy Spider-man only proves that you like being treated like crap by Marvel.

Now that's pretty sad.:spidey:

All these guys are doing are telling people why they continue to buy and read Spider-Man comic books. But yet, you have to tell them that because they enjoy what's going on, and simply because you don't, you have to compare them to battered wives/husbands. You have to make people feel less about themselves over a Spider-Man comic book.

And why? To make it seem like you know what you're talking about? That because you say, "I HATE what's going on in Spider-Man today" will make you smart or something? Because YOU'RE boycotting the books, or book, over some storylines that means whoever DOESN'T boycott with you is lesser than you? Because they find enjoyment out of something that you cannot? That makes them wrong?

No, it doesn't make them wrong. And it doesn't make you wrong.

But as long as you keep continuing to insult people because you can't wrap your head around OTHER PEOPLE enjoying something you can't...you really look like a hateful, ignorant, loud mouth.

Don't mind savemarvel and those who defend his point of view. They're just children.

Nicely said.

SpideyInATree knows how to put it. Everyone has there own opinion on the matter. A stubborn opinion in some cases.

I know I was pissed when Venom was ruined, Scorpion-Venom who the fu** though of that sh**?? I don't have an opinion on if Spidey was ruined, I'm waiting to see how his unmasking turns out

I might not agree with you on Spidey, but I do think we can disagree without petty insults.

Thank you SIAT, you DO know how to put it!

And thanks J.J as well as pussywillow!

We know what we like, eh?

Look, it's pretty simple...if you think it's crap, and you prefer not to spend money on crap, then don't.

If it doesn't really bother you, then keep on buying.

The changes bother me. A lot. But I find the comics more enjoyable than not, so I continue to read. Much like the Clone Saga & Heroes Reborn. Bad ideas for the most part, but still a fun read. And again, I know that most of this nonsense won't last forever.

What the hell is the deal with Amazing not having a specific artist now! That's one of my beefs with this book is that they used to give Spider-fans the best of writers and artists and now there's no name talent drawing the flagship title!?? Do they just not care anymore about this character at all?

Sure they do; that's why the best Spidey artist is on Ultimate.

And I'm certain you'd just love to enlighten me.

generalizing and calling everyone who defend his point of view children is just as childish as his insults in the first place.

you're right. I loved it.

I was saying that his argument itself is childish. Basically his point is "spider-man sucks and anyone who still buys it is an idiot and wrong because they don't agree with me." An unwillingness to realize or accept that other people may disagree with your opinion and they are just as right to have their opinion as you are to have yours is the thought process of a child. That's what I meant. You don't like spider-man and don't buy it as a result. I do like spider-man and continue to buy it as a result. To say I'm wrong and equate my actions with an abused woman is an intellectually vacant argument.
