ive never read the stories with them getting cozy.. but there are comic covers and panels of them kissing.. but context is key with those and i don't have the context

I've read a couple of the ones where they do kiss, but a kiss is at far it goes in those (one, at the beginning of an FF issue after Sue and Namor had helped out Alpha Flight, was a complete fake out).

Basically Sue has admitted she was once infatuated with Namor (in the early days), but she never loved him, and after marrying Reed she regards him (or did until Namor's recent actions in the books) as a close friend.

If they did ever take that further later on (missed much of the 90's books as they were awful) I have not read those stories, nor do I wish to tbh (I was none too keen when Byrne had the Torch hook up with Alicia, though they ret-conned that out later).

Most of those aren't that good, half of those failed commercially, and all of those could've succeeded despite his direction, not because of it.

But this isn't about Joss Whedon, so I digress.

... all of whedon's work has large fan followings.. Chronicle was a single film.. Whedon spawned franchises...

this comparison is beyond silly

Whedon nearly has cult like followers.. Trank does not. this attitude that 1-film under a belt that was generally viewed as "Good" not "outstanding" or a ground breaking film by any means... suddenly makes him a god.. is making said people look like they're insane.

if you're a fan of his 1 piece of work.. awesome. you can have that. but lets not make up crap

Buffy the Vampire Slayer never would have succeeded without Joss. The film proved that.

After what Trank said about Sue... I am definitely done with this. Any tiny thoughts about maybe watching this are gone.

I usually don't pay attention to interviews unless someone makes a gaffe that blows up.

Most directors and actors give kind of blanket statements that could cover any film.

Trank sounds like the condescending nerd you meet in comic shops. But he's also, so far, been honest about what he's doing. The Amblin, Cronenberg, non-comic tone FF is exactly what's been on screen so far.

Doing the opposite, that's usually the downfall of movies like this. They lie/pander/exaggerate to the fans about what they're doing(pulling from the source or the character will do this and that) to get them in theaters then fans get mad when they're duped. Michael Bay is notorious for this.

He's being honest, fair enough but also he doesn't seem to have a clue as to what he's doing nor is he realising we now live in a post Avengers world. Especially when he says **** like this...

"The original two films to me are very similar to a lot of recent movies that have come out, in terms of that kind of cartoonish. It's just not something that me and Simon are interested in as storytellers."

:doh:Like seriously what movies is he talking about that have been cartoony? I'll be honest, I loved Chronicle. Its a great movie and Josh seems like a cool guy but the way he's talking about the FF is as if he's reinventing them and trying to transcend the CBM genre with this film. Granted the Story films were awful but that had nothing to do with tone, poor scripts ruined those movies.

A CBM can be light and fun and still resonate with audiences and be taken seriously. For example, The Avengers and GOTG. Those films have more or less the same tones as the Story films yet they're praised. Why? Because of good writing goddammit.

Does Trank really think he's gonna save the CBM genre with this film being scripted by Kinberg? Jesus Christ its the ****ing FANTASTIC FOUR not CHRONICLE 2. Everything he's talking about his vision of the FF is in the same vein as "BEEN THERE, DONE THAT". He's not exactly covering any new ground here. This is TASM all over again. Just watch. Its more or less gonna retread ground that's already been covered. I'm ****ing done. They are not getting my money. Ugh.

I was technically around 10 years ago (I didn't post much in the FF boards because, y'know, it was obvious those movies were going to suck pretty bad), and I support this film.

I feel like hard sci-fi is the FF's origin story that would still work on film. FF is based on old pulp sci-fi stories by Edgar Rice Burroughs and HP Lovecraft. That genre hasn't existed since the 1970s. What happened was that in the 1980s, Neuromancer was published, Blade Runner and Mad Max: The Road Warrior were released and the Chernobyl disaster occured so we wound up with dystopian sci-fi as the norm and still gritty post-cyberpunk like Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix was the brighter response.

That's a big part of the reason why the previous films failed and trying to bring back the same look would get an equally negative response.

I am not comparing the Sue and BW, I said that trope was used in IM2. Also I haven't read the first FF story in a while. However didn't Sue start off as a actress? I believe the mission was a two man mission and Sue the actress sneaked on board with her teenage brother. So clearly not really smart and not really motherly at that point.

What origin have you read? Reed wasn't keen on her going but she and Johnny insisted. That's hardly 'sneaking' on.

You have a Gintama avatar and you've see the light with this film. You're alright, Crimz.

The irony in that Sue statement is that after this film, I could see Trank being driven to direct films that are actually about ****ty secretaries. Also, anybody catch the part in the interview where he claims Ben was always short? Apparently he only knew the Benjy Grimm version of the character. :o

And to clarify to people who don't know:

Sue has never slept with Namor or any one else, besides her husband.

I was not going to watch it before, but seeing the leaked trailer of Sue flying through a giant boulder made me think she might get justice. And my resolve weakened.

But after what he said about the original character... He obviously has no clue about these characters and I have no intention of watching any of this film.

I really don't know how any true FF fan can support this after hearing the crap Trank spews from his mouth. I'm glad Marvel's actual PR policy seems to be "meet the bare minimum requirements and that's it" with Fox stuff.

This is my Superman Lives. Nicolas Cage as Superman is something the world was not ready for. :woot:

I will watch this scifi film.

Pass the popcorn!

Realistically, I think it's a variation of 'sour grapes'. Fox doesn't want to spend what they would need to spend to do the FF right. But instead of admitting they're the ones who aren't doing it right, they're turning around and saying: "See all those people spending twice as much as us and making great movies and making billions of dollars doing it? They're doing it wrong and people don't want that. People really want a grounded film in which people suffer with their powers and nothing big happens."

It gives the impression he's never actually read any of the original comics, or just had a very casual look at them and dismissed them. It's like some couch potato seeing the title "Iron Man" and dismissing it as a boring triathlon movie.

Further irony with the whole not making "cartoony" adaptations:

Fox did a live action version of Dragon Ball that attempted to be more grounded than the source material. It didn't go over well. They then distributed the Toei produced animated film Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods. It's pretty much a comedy with action scenes, it's considered part of the primary series (with an original script from original author Akira Toriyama to boot), and the antagonist is a cat god that wants pudding. The cartoon that embraced the source material and made pudding an integral part of the battle for Earth was a success and is getting a sequel.

Sour grapes, Dog in the Manger. What other famous Aesop's Fables can be applied to this movie?

Josh Trank is like that kid who played the trambone/trumpet in Whiplash who gets let go because he didn't know whether he was playing in key or not.

Maybe Trank thinks that Sue dressed like this in the original comics:

I don't know about the actual story content, but the title of "The Ass and his Masters" is a great description of Trank.

Heck yeah!

Ain't Trank's fault Marvel doesn't have the FF rights or why Fox didn't give them back. He's just a director making a movie the way he wants.

Heck if I got my hands on Wonder Woman or the Shadow, must of you guys would be seething mad at what I'd do.

You were right she didn't sneak on but that just makes nobody smart in that scenario, so thanks you that.

So what you're saying is that you would also **** up a major adaptation, therefore Trank is aces? Okay then...
