Fant4stic: Reborn! - - - - - Part 39

Not open for further replies.
Rottentomatoes.com rating has dropped now to 17%.

It's funny: the other four films coming out this weekend are all rated "Fresh" with scores ranging from 69% to 100%. Fantfourstic is the only one that's rotten.

The struggle is real.

I've brought up the idea of them showing up in Black Panther, like in the comic.

well... not sure about that ... at least not the whole "lets trick the F4 to coming here so i can see if i'm ready to fight Klaw now that i'm king" kinda vibe...

plus the panther will come before the first F4 film anyway...

now.. maybe if a future film.. Klaw creates some sort of terrorist plot in the US with vibranium... and with the help of Wizard creates the frightful four... i could see some sort of team-up film with that i guess?

Or tie Latveria and Wakanda in together as opposing nations

I hope that the failure of this film convinces Fox to finally let go of the FF. They are now 0-3 and simply do not know how to adapt them properly. Outside of pride (or perhaps arrogance), there is no other reason to hold onto this property any longer.

I think they'll just wait for the rights to revert back to Marvel, honestly. But, 2020 at the earliest is probably when an MCU F4 movie would be released. But, the Spider-Man sequel and either an Ant-Man or Dr Strange sequel could be 2020 releases also.
Maybe they'd just use them here and there for the time being and wait out a solo film.

Fortunately the Russos were dead serious when they needed to be. However, while I haven't seen the Winter Soldier since it came out, and I'll admit, I might be wrong, I do remember a lot of jokes. One stands out: that stupid Apple store guy. That completely ruined the tension in that scene. Yet yes, Marvel films are amazing, they do have too much humor a lot of times, but sometimes that's good, I mean Ant-Man was amazing. The Marvel formula doesn't ever appear to be make something a comedy, it just appears to be don't get too serious if you don't need to, which isn't always bad.

Killed the tension? Hyperbole much?

Have no idea what you're talking about. CA:TWS's humor was perfectly balanced considering how over-loaded and obnoxious some of it was in other MCU films.

Good point. Maybe they'd have the Fantastic 4 already be around though? I just hope Marvel gets the rights back. The Fantastic 4 and their fans deserve better.

FOX is certainly not lacking in arrogance. This is the studio that killed off Cyclops in X-Men: The Last Stand because the actor followed Bryan Singer to Superman Returns. :whatever: THEN they rushed the film's production to beat Superman Returns to the theaters. Thank you. It SUCKS and it's painful. I know some think that me (and the majority here) are just negative "haters" but the truth is we genuinely love these characters, have read them for decades and believe in this franchise. We know just how valuable The Fantastic Four is and how incredible its potential could be. But we keep banging our heads against a studio who is ****ing this property out for cash with zero care or investment. In the process they are absolutely ruining this thing in the eyes of general moviegoers who will NEVER know how great the Fantastic Four are. 20th Century FOX has made the Fantastic Four a JOKE.

I can't bring myself to see it in theaters--I'm just so pi$$ed off at seeing history repeat itself. And judging by these first reviews, it looks like I'm right in saving my money. :whatever:

Well, when Marvel get the rights back, here's what I want to see from the reboot.

Combine that 616 and UFF origins. Since Fox messed both of them up and audiences not knowing how they got their powers in the MCU continuity, there needs to be a retelling of the origin, sadly. But it can be done in a much more fun way that feels far less tedious and avoids hitting the same beats and integrates the action into the plot so we don't have one final battle in the last few minutes of the film.

Most of the film won't be set on Earth. Just the very beginning and the very end. The general outline is Apollo 13, Alien, Gravity and Bill Nye the Science Guy rolled into one.

Act 1. Reed, Sue, Ben and Dr. Bentley Whitman are prepared to enter a wormhole into the recently discovered Negative Zone. The problem is Whitman gets sick with a flu which causes a different team of four NASA astronauts to undertake the mission. Naturally, Reed doesn't want to lose his shot at the Nobel Prize for physics after discovering the Negative Zone and opening up a wormhole to another universe to some dictator over in Europe who's also the world's leading AI specialist. So Reed brings his brother in law on the mission despite him being a self-admitted loser who does nothing with his life and absolutely not an astronaut as the take the shuttle through the wormhole into the Negative Zone where they discover the planet Mantracora. The location was already known after trading radio signals through the wormhole which proves that there is indeed intelligent alien life inside. They meet aliens, proclaim that they come in peace, Reed and Sue make love on the alien planet, etc. Johnny is the one who takes his helmet off first after Reed confirms that the atmosphere is breathable but exposure to another universe may very well change matter upon contact. Nothing unusual happens to any of the four on Mantracora and they prepare to leave. Meanwhile, a shadowy armored figure sneaks onboard the spacecraft.

Act 2. Upon returning to our universe, Johnny accidentally causes a malfunction while the shuttle is within Earth's orbit due to his inexperience as exposure to the Negative Zone causes all four astronauts to begin transforming, causing severe damage to the shuttle. Ben's skin is becoming scaly, making him resemble his appearance from the early Lee/Kirby FF issues. Johnny starts a fire in the shuttle and doesn't know how to put it out and Sue accidentally keeps hitting sensitive equipment with force fields while turning invisible. Reed seems to have the fewest problems but he begins flopping around and melting into his own suit before reforming. The shuttle is too damaged to land after all the damage caused and they're forced to dock with a space station. Before they're able to do that, they have to fix the hole in their shuttle within the vaccuum of space. before running out of oxygen. Ben is beginning to grow larger and his suit is ripping which causes him to stay behind and contact the space station with an offhand mention that Ben can't breathe in space. The four dock and Ben completely collapses. on the floor. Reed begins looking for answers as to what's happening to them as he finds that he now lacks bones of any sort and his skin, organs and muscles have increased elasticity. Sue is not only able to refract light around her body but also project force fields which she can control and is the most stable of the four, requiring the least medical attention. Johnny is held in a secure cell until he can get his powers under control for safety reasons. Ben is dying due to his body crystallizing. His scales are now literally turning to stone and his organs are now beginning to crystallize. Reed and Sue need to search for a medicine within the next hour before Ben dies of organ failure. All this time, the armored stowaway begins killing the astronauts on the space station and people start mentioning others going missing. Comments about missing people is just blown off just to poke fun at slasher movie tropes. Reed and Sue develop a medicine in pill form which is able to save Ben by keeping him from growing larger and preserving his innards. Ben is now kept in an extra large space suit and is learning how to move again in his new body. The good news is that as long as he takes his medication daily, he's theoretically immortal. The downside is that the pill that saved his life sterilized him.

Act 3. Reed and Sue discover a dead body on the space station and the lights go out shortly after. Ben is over with Johnny keeping him company until he's deemed safe to return to Earth. Johnny has developed a good enough control over his pyrokinesis that he's able to use his finger as a match and keep the lab lit up enough for both of them to see. The two start bonding over jokes and scary stories. The last of which is about a, "haunted space station" which at the very end has a loud scream coming from the hallway. Johnny wonders what that scream was and Ben mentions that somebody tripped over something while the station is on reserve power. Johnny suggests that they still check it out since some poor astronaut could be hurt and Ben agrees, breaking Johnny out of his cell. They two of them then find no astronaut but some blood splattered on the wall. Ben jokes that he tripped over something sharp. Reed and Sue are heading to find the generator to turn the lights back on but spend more time stumbling in the dark looking for a flashlight than they do making any progress, both claiming that they know where a supply closet is with Sue making mention of budget cuts to emergency lights on the station that makes their situation seem like something out of a monster movie. Ben and Johnny run into Reed and Sue and they naturally all freak out at first since it's dark. Johnny comments that it's like something out of an episode of Scooby Doo. Sue asks the question of, "then where's the monster" and that's when Annihilus appears through the light generated by Johnny's flaming hand. Annihilus introduces himself and says that his world is known as Tyanna and his species has spread throughout the Negative Zone. He was on Mantracora to plant seeds of his species and alter its atmosphere to wipe out all life and replace it with that of his own species, a plan he abandoned after he saw the FF's shuttle exit the wormhole and land upon the surface. He has discovered a whole new universe to conquer, starting with the world they are orbiting around. He holds out several capsules and mentions that they will be the instrument of Earth's destruction. His final statement is, "this shall be the hour of your destruction at my hand. May the Arthosian Empire conquer your world." Ben's replay is, "No it isn't. You have the hour all wrong. It's Clobberin' Time!" A battle occurs aboard the space station with Annihilus preparing it for reentry into our Atmopshphere. Eventually, Annihilus' mask breaks and we see a nasty looking mantis face. Within seconds of contact with the atmosphere of our universe, Annihilus' face begins rotting and looks like how he looked in John Byrne's run. Reed begins contact with mission control and demands that they open up the wormhole as they're carrying some very dangerous cargo back with them. (Including the cosmic control rod which was gifted to the FF in the first act which Reed has on him and Annihilus wants as it as it grants control over energy within the environment.) Reed asks how much he wants it and throws the CCR into an escape pod, then launches the pod into the wormhole just opened by NASA into the Negative Zone. The FF then get into their own escape pods and escape just as the space station goes crashing down somewhere in the Indian ocean. The FF are later seen recovering on the beach in Thailand. Sue mentions that she's pregnant and just got off the phone with the Nobel Comittee and Reed is formally nominated. Mr. Collins, the CEO of the Future Foundation (who owned the space station the FF were on) comes to Reed and tells him that he got a lot of very intelligent, irreplaceable people killed and unleashed a dangerous alien who could have destroyed the world as we know it... and he's offering Reed a job as chief researcher with five floors of the Baxter Building belonging to the FF. Reed asks if the FF on the company uniforms stands for Fantastic Four of the Future Foundation and Collins' response is, "eh, why not."

Post Credits 1 - A Kree colony. A blue-skinned Kree boy points up at the sky and asks his parents what something is. The camera pans upwards and zooms in on the wormhole as Annihilus (with CCR and a repaired helmet) emerges and behind him, through the portal lie a fleet of spacecraft, prepared to slaughter billions.

Post Credits 2 - Reed is shown accepting his Nobel Prize as the camera zooms out to reveal a screen then further to show a lab filled with robots and then turning around to show Doom, in his iconic appearance slamming his fist down.

Characterizations

Reed: A fast talker who has a tendency to narrate what he's doing, particularly when it comes to the science of what's happening. As much of the film as possible will be intended to be scientifically accurate. He's a brilliant theoretical physicist who loves what he does and believes that scientific progress is the key to humanity's future. Has a tendency to ramble to himself when nobody is around to hear him. His main weakness is that he gets so focused on what he's doing, that he doesn't realize when he does something seriously wrong, although he'll be the first guy to admit it. He's filled with a childlike wonder at everything around him and seeks to study and make himself a better person at all times. Even when all seems hopeless, he retains his optimism and never believes in giving up, no matter the cost. He's also highly protective of those around him.

Sue: Reed's wife who's also the only person to talk him down when he's out of line (although she caves when she hears about potentially getting a Nobel Prize). She deeply loves her brother although she often gets frustrated at his lack of motivation and maintains a close friendship with Ben. Her main weakness is lacking initiative. Her weakness is that she frequently defers to others and doesn't speak up enough, then explodes when she's finally had enough.

Johnny: A hotheaded NEET who Sue admits has potential but seldom applies himself. He just claims that it's a lack of opportunity but does nothing to better himself until he gets the chance of a lifetime. Enjoys joking around and uses humor to relieve tense situations, much to the annoyance of others.

Ben: A gruff fighter pilot turned NASA astronaut. Is often grouchy but his heart is in the right place. Has anger issues but can be reasoned with. Usually morose but likes to smile whenever he feels like he's capable of doing so. Starts out disliking Johnny during Act 1, being furious with him during Act 2 and then during Act 3 bonding with him.

Annihilus: Speaks in a monotone with an accent best described as, "mechanical demon." Wants to wipe out all life in our universe on the belief that humans wouldn't go exploring the Negative Zone if they didn't seek to conquer. Nevermind that his mission is to conquer new worlds, wipe out all who live there and then repopulate with Arthosians and his native planet's life. Holds to fatalistic beliefs that he can't change even in the face of evidence and holds that the only truth in life is survival of one's species.

Bentley Whitman: Not seen aside from one quick scene where he lies on a bed watching TV with a box of tissues and sees that Reed has hijacked his shuttle. He starts screaming about how he'll one day pay Reed Back.

Doom: Not seen until after the credits but mentioned as a brilliant AI programmer who lost his face in a shrapnel explosion during Latveria's war for independence in the 90s. Was able to rule his country as a teenager and turned Latveria into the world's wealthiest and most prosperous country on Earth.

Mr. Collins: Owns the Future Foundation in Four Freedoms Plaza as well as a space station orbiting Earth. Not much else to him.

Costumes: Starting off with traditional space suits and later being swapped out for new unstable nanosuits on the Space Satation which can keep Reed from tripping over himself and Johnny from lighting his clothes on fire. Sue gets a chameleon effect and Ben just gets an XXXXL space suit that the Future foundation had lying around. Suits are blue with an F for future Foundation in a circle as an insignia. They're said to adapt for any condition and were originally designed to help with handling hazardous materials.

Maybe that was their end game? Here you go Marvel. Here's your Fantastic Four back. Enjoy.

I'm pretty sure they had this in mind. If it fails, at least the property is now damaged, should they decide to turn it over to Marvel.

Exactly

The Last Stand
Origins
Daredevil
FF1
FF2

The FOX hate doesn't come from a vacuum.

You forgot Elektra.

And would that one guy stop saying "Fox "owns" Fantastic Four."
They own NOTHING!
They lease FF from Marvel as long as they keep making movies.
They cannot use a cameos by FF in X-Men movies to retain rights and yes, they have to invest "X" amount of money into any FF movie.
They would not be allowed to make a $20 million drama FF movie where they sit around talking and use their powers to light candles, reach accross the room to get a slice pizza or move heavy furniture.
There ARE rules in the lease besides " movie every 7 years"
They will........

1. Keep it out of spite till 2022 & let it revert.
2. Make a deal with Marvel
3. Try again in 5 years doing it right ( or wrong) again.

FOX is certainly not lacking in arrogance. This is the studio that killed off Cyclops in X-Men: The Last Stand because the actor followed Bryan Singer to Superman Returns. :whatever: THEN they rushed the film's production to beat Superman Returns to the theaters. The result of such childish suit behavior? The Last Stand is the lowest rated of all X-Men ensemble films because it was created out of greed, pettiness and arrogance.

Same ingredients for this film's production. :down

indeed. Sometimes I think we are the only ones left who witnessed or remembers the drama behind X3 so accurately... so many seem to have forgotten....

hell i even remember a good chunk of the cast bad mouthing Singer (Halle, Rebecca, Ian, and Alan) but all that drama seems covered up now... though i wanted to blame all that drama on Tom Rothman... who's now at sony.. (which scares me with spidey)

Yes. So true. All of it. :csad:

Well I will be a man and admit it seems I was wrong about this movie having the potential to be good. I try to keep and open mind but this is a betrayal of my trust. The reviews seem to confirm the rumors and bad things people been hating the movie for. So I suppose the hate that's been around here is justified ( sorta). But I will say the coming soon review seems like someone that posts on these boards wrote it. So also say it's kinda trollish with the Ang Lee comparisons and such, but I can't say for sure until I seen the movie. I actually liked the cast and director but from the coming soon review this movie has a bad story, bad CGI, which sucks. This movie is only 1 hour and 46 mins long. According to that coming soon review they don't even get their powers until the 45 min mark. And the movie just ends when things get interesting. I am going to still see this for as cheap as possible ( four dollar mantinee) but jeesh this seems like a X-Men Origins, Green Lantern, Super Man Returns bad.

Good point. Maybe they'd have the Fantastic 4 already be around though? I just hope Marvel gets the rights back. The Fantastic 4 and their fans deserve better.

maybe.. i sorta feel like they may time jump them...

Maybe Doom thinks he defeated them in the 60s (or they all got dimensional displaced) they return to the modern era.. met with praise ala cap... Doom now that the 4 are back.. his old rivalry reheats... and his country is in need of repair ... idk..

I feel like Doctor Who crossed with Lost in Space should be the next direction for the Fantastic Four franchise... explore weird stuff... and it's a bit off the wall

Though I don't disagree with your general evaluation, I do feel the need to voice that I think Scott was ALWAYS going to be screwed in TLS. Even under Singer the first two films were the Wolverine show and he didn't seem particularly interested in Scott. Also, Fox had Marsden for at least a month (I vividly remember that being verified at one point). Not that it excuses the bad treatment that Fox gave to Scott -- they never were interested in being loyal to the source material and frankly Singer never really was either.

But yeah Fox totally rushed that production, and I don't doubt that sticking it to Singer had something to do with it. Fox is all about short term greed. That's why they didn't care if the third x-film sucked since it was the last one in the trilogy; and that's why instead of taking all the goodwill from DoFP and putting it towards a properly budgeted and marketed FF film in order to expand their fanbase, they completely squandered it on a cheap production.

It's hard to tell. I had heard something to the effect that there was a faction within Fox that was against this project from the onset, and instead wanted to focus resources to the X-Men franchise (a proven money maker) rather than gamble on the FF any longer, but they lost out to those who wanted to take the chance.

At the end of the day, any asset that Fox has leased from Marvel that does not bring in revenue is not an asset, but a liability. Just because Fox can afford to sit on the property for X number of years (assuming while paying Marvel additional fees in-between films), does not mean they should. There is simply no sound business logic behind that, on either a short or long term scale.

Prior to this film, Fox was at least on equal negotiating footing with Marvel, but now they've undermined their own position for extended TV or cross over rights. As long as FF is in the hands of Fox they are a toxic asset. They would gain value if handed over to Marvel, and Marvel (and the rest of the world) knows that. If Fox somehow is able to trade the FF for anything of value without some kind of concession, I will be legitimately surprised at this point.

Marvel has already shown they can and will turn around assets that others could not capitalize on into proven hits, sometimes in ways the public doesn't foresee. I don't think the FF would honestly be any different, given how iconic they are with Marvel.

The structure of this movie sounds so bafflingly fragmented to me. Actually more interested to eventually check it out than before to see what works and what doesn't.

Fox is all about short term greed. actually.. according to Singer, he wanted Scott to be a big part of X3 and the Phoenix saga...

but he also said this well after the fact.. and well after the fact he was in near tears when a reporter asked him how he felt about X3 winning the box office against Superman Returns... so who knows if it was BS or not.

It's interesting. It's been a relatively quiet night on this forum tonight. We haven't heard a PEEP from Marvin, and a few others here who were so adamant that the rest of us were being unfairly rough on this movie.

What a difference a day (and some professional and fan reviews) can make. :whatever:

So...for X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, will Fox use the tagline:

- From the studio that brought you Fant4stic

?

:whatever:

honestly.. kinda hoping they find a way to not make them all scientists the next time around... i want Johnny to be the same age parker ends up being in the timeline (Wherever that may fall) and Sue to not be some sort of super-genius..

couldn't it be just simply possible there's some sort of space negative zone portal created in a lab... SHIELD is coming to shut down the program Reed makes a mad dash last attempt with Ben... but due to Reed fearing SHIELD is going to take away everything, and a young johnny sneeks in.. Sue runs in after them... they get exposed.. return, have powers... unfortunately that may also have them slightly working for shield.. but who knows...
