Well the bottom line is unlikely to be hurt too much by this film. Fox is successful enough to weather this without selling the rights back to Marvel.

But what's wrong with selling it back and getting a nice chunk of change? I see no reason for studio executives to sit on a property they've clearly never cared for merely out of spite.

I can't speak for the rest of the internet, but most people around here had nice enough things to say about the cast. They were never the problem. I still am excited to see what MBJ does with the human torch. I've heard he's one of the best parts of the film.

Yeah, he is.

I've been gone for a few hours....just got back and started looking trough this thread....I told you guys to stop with the gifs and stupid joke pics....some of you didn't....you will wish you had listened to me.

No to merch. Merch is something which Marvel want back. They will never trade that.

... marvel owns the merch rights, fox doesnt. Any fox film toys money would mostly go to marvel and hasbro. Just fox gets some of that too .. but no, fox does not own xmen or f4 merch rights at all

Wow to Keyser's review. Thanks for that, Keyser. That's the sort of review I've been waiting for, one that's not entirely hate-filled and balanced about the actual film.

It almost sounds like two different tones. I wonder if the delineation is meant to be intentional, like "Things were bad, now here's a pause, and their world goes crazy!".

Reading the reviews, it almost sounds like FOX made a slightly more serious Marvel movie. That's...intriguing. It doesn't really sound all that dark.

Honestly, I think the execution is going to be make or break this film. The basic story sounds okay, and it sounds like the actors did their jobs fairly well.

I'm a bit troubled at the "no character development" thing. That seems counter to what we've seen. Keyser suggests that ideas are introduced, and then not paid off very well. A couple of the reviews say the first 60 minutes is "boring". When I hear that, I always think "cerebral, hopefully". And oftentimes it is.

I almost wonder, along with everyone else, if there was a more cerebral movie and they edited it into an action film.

From a psychological standpoint, they've gotten a lot of Doom's core personality traits and motivations right, at least in the context of this more grounded filmworld. I'm really glad to hear that. Sounds like Kebbel will be fun to watch.

The reviews don't surprise me so far. It sounds more mediocre than awful, though. Interestingly enough, the reviews are bashing FOX, not Trank. That's interesting.

I kind of don't buy that there was never a major action/threat at the end of the film. I buy that they added certain beats to it to flesh it out, but not an entire third act that was never there. Just don't. Not after the third act of CHRONICLE.

I'm concerned about he character development too. That what is as anticipating the most.
Whenever a movie is called boring I find that to be really subjective. Shawshank Redemption could be called boring as its a personal tale. This could be boring to some but deep and resonating to others depending on how's it's done.

It sounds more mediocre than awful, though..

That's the general feeling I've observed. Sounds like for some it was intriguing but the payoff was sloppy so it has merits but was disappointing in the end

FOX has already come to Marvel asking for the rights to an X-Men TV show. That has been confirmed. Now that the studio has destroyed all of their bargaining power, they would be very fortunate if the FF character family rights are sufficient to get the deal done.

Of course FOX could always threaten to stick to the release date of "Fant4stic 2: 4 Times The Charm" in 2017. But I doubt anyone at Marvel will be buying what they are selling.

Sony made a second Ghost Rider with with the same intent and Marvel paid up a boatload of cash for it. The only use for a toxic asset is to sell it.

How much did Marvel pay to get Ghost Rider back? I don't think I ever read that info.

They didn't. Sony released the rights back to their studio partner, Marvel, after the failure of GR:SOV. No additional consideration was required.

ugh

this is heartbreaking

I agree. It really is heartbreaking to hear they started out somewhere promising and ended nowhere.

Guess the 105 minutes really is short even though some people say it is long. I really don't appreciate it when a movie ends when I am expecting to see more things. One of the reasons why I loved The Dark Knight was because there was more to the film than I thought. I thought the truck flip scene was the end which was fine by me.

Pretty sure trank pitched this vision to fox... i mean he was still contractually forced to do the film under certain peramaters, but i think its been a joint effort of bad decisions from everyone

Oh i agree. I was just saying that I don't think Trank alone is to blame for this, nor should he be an escape goat. Kinberg and FOX in general. This is their mess, combined.

Well they were interested in an X-Men crossover so they may end up trying to fix this mess in a crossover film. I just dont see them wanting to lose these characters and Galacticus and Silver Surfer especially. Not for a tv show.

I thought so. It's the same with Blade and Punisher. Hopefully Fox is smarter and tries to work with Marvel than against them.

I thought the rights just reverted

No that's been a misconception from the start. Whether this movie succeeds or fails Fox retain the rights for another 5-7 years. A deal may happen but it's unlikely both sides will reach an agreement that satisfies both sides.

That's partially why Ive been optimistic towards this as its the only guaranteed F4 for a while.

I was talking about Ghost Rider

They didn't pay anything. I thought Sony just gave up on GR.

Afaik they did? Same deal with The Punisher, handed back early as the studio simply didn't want to try again.

First I've heard of Marvel paying for GR's early reversion.

FF with its massive library of supporting characters and worlds shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with Ghostrider. Sony wasn't doing anything with it moving forward. And it lacks the immediate impact FF would have in the MCU

Cheers, Keyser.

So I suppose we don't see them in their classic costumes at the end?
