The first Maze Runner wasn't exactly great to begin with, so I don't know what people were expecting. We aren't talking a Hunger Games-level franchise here.
It depends on what we would consider to be underperforming. I SEE SPIDEY is one of the best box office people on this forum, so I'd certainly be interested in her opinion. But for me personally, given the competition from DC and Marvel and the amount riding on this film, I would consider anything under $900 million worldwide to be a disappointment and anything under $700 million to be a disaster.
Apocalypse is the biggest weapon Fox has left. If they can't get up around or surpass the billion dollar mark with him or at least a big increase over what DOFP earned, Fox is going to have real problems with the franchise moving forward as it probably means the audience is tapped out.
On the whole Fox having a bad year thing...
Looks like Scorch Trials is getting less positive early reception than some anticipated. It's still early, but it's only sitting at 55% on RT. I remember when people told me Fox was so different than they were in 2009, and that a year like that couldn't happen again...
I suspect Scorch Trials will be somewhat critic proof, somewhat like Twilight and other young adult novel translations, but you're right Fox is having a terrible year, and their stock has tanked.
I don't think it's a question of whether or not the audience for the X-Men films are tapped out. The fact that a film featuring the return of the very popular OT cast, Hugh Jackman and Sentinels didn't increase the audience from TLS tells us they aren't making any new X-Men fans. All the growth in DOFP was international, and I'm not sure next summer's film, which is relying heavily on young actors in recast roles, will see any additional growth.
I think a return within 10% up or down from DOFP would be a solid BO result and give FOX confidence to move forward with the series. A drop of 20% or higher and they may be making another call to the Mouse.

Some months ago a voyage went wrong and a group of 4 friends got powers, the leader of them ran away and the military want to use the other 3. They eventualy have to reunite in order to explore the dimension that gave them powers, which will eventualy lead into something that will threat the world.
Looks like Kate Mara has been typecast as "girl in front of computer"![]()

Matt Damon also had this role inToby Kebell should've had the Matt Damon role and been typecast as the astronaut stranded alone on a harsh planet and presumed dead.![]()
t:I like your premise but I still feel that Reed shouldn't have escaped and left Ben especially. Plus if he is still on screen we can have a better chance of seeing his leadership skills and intelligence.
The mythical unicorn Trank cut would've gotten 105% on Rotten Tomatoes and had an opening weekend Box Office of a billion dollars.

Kate Mara had a bit part in Iron Man 2 as a US Marshal, so there's that.
