Fast 8 - Part 1

I liked this big stupid movie. And I know one DVD extra this thing needs: a professional wrestling style commentary with JR and Corey Graves. Because that's what this movie is; a pro-wrestling storyline with cars.

"BY GAWD he must be broken in half!" :funny:

Over half a billion on opening weekend? Bloody hell!!

There is one Black woman in this entire franchise in Natalie Emmanuel, but no Asian women, unless you count Gal Gadot, who's Israeli.

Me when I realized that Israel is part of Asia...

Domestic actual is 98 million... Would the studio still consider that good?

98 million domestic is pretty low at this point for this franchise. It should have opened up at no less than 120million but whatever, it's total gross in one weekend is insane.

It's not bad and not big. Still enough to support a decent but unspectacular domestic run while the overseas absolutely blows up.

In the long run, I'm not bothered as long as it does well enough for Universal to keep pushing for 10. The international markets alone should get us the ninth film at least.

It's not horrible, but it's not great either. Sets the stage for a somewhat mediocre NA run. Given what the final cume is likely to be, they'll probably still greenlight another sequel anyway.

What made them carry on after Tokyo Drift made $62 total domestic and $158m worldwide? :woot: They obviously have a lot of tolerance on this franchise, Crazy to see how well it's done from being at that level in 2006.

Its much like James Bond. Skyfall was bigger then any James Bond movie in part because is was the 50th anniversary of Bond. Spectre was never going to be able to match that. While still a hit movie at $200M ($880M WW), it was a drop off from the $304M (1.1B WW) of Skyfall. Furious 7 got a bump because of Paul Walkers death. The Fate of the Furious didn't have that and so there was going to be a drop. Also like James Bond they make most of there money overseas (Furious 7 made almost 77% of the 1.5B outside of the US). So while 98M isn't amazing its plenty for this series because it did almost 500M overseas this weekend.

My ramblings...

I wasn't expecting much after the last two entries which ranged from terrible to unapologetically dumb fun. Fast 8 is more or less like Furious 7 to where it just wants to have fun. The cast are pretty much superheroes at this point so whatever ridiculous things that happen, I bought into it. I will say this movie has a very odd and drastic turn when they cut between scenes of the Rock and his crew clowning around to Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron's serious melodrama. It needed a better balance. Overall, It's no Fast Five (which is arguably the best one of the franchise), but it's decent enough.
6.5/10

Here's how I would rank them:

Fast Five
The Fast and the Furious
Fast & Furious
The Fate of the Furious
Furious 7
Fast & Furious 6
2 Fast 2 Furious
Tokyo Drift

There needed to be some actual good taste on this thread :o

I think a few other people stole your shtick a few pages back.

Honestly, i never quite understood the fascination people have with this franchise.
The last one i saw was the 6th, the one before Statham, and i found it completely forgettable.
The last scene, the last fight, on the plane, was, imo, one of the worst action sequences i've seen in a long time.

Before that, they were all...meh.
Popcorn movies galore and nothing more.

I'll eventually watch the 8th...maybe in 2 or 3 years.

The fact that i don't quite like Vin Diesel might also help.
I find him a horrible actor, one that makes Keanu Reeves an acting god.
The only good role he ever made was Riddick, because the role fit him like a glove.

Trust me - you're not alone.

This franchise has been hot garbage for most of the sequels - when cheesy, mindless fun takes a hard left into mindlessness.

My rankings are strangely similar to Kane's. Maybe I should see it in theaters...

They will greenlight 20 sequels today if they could. This is officially Transformers now. Living on the overseas, which are incredible here.

Man, that Scott Eastwood was... devoid of anything at all. He's got his dad's looks, though.

Was Kurt's son busy or...?

Also, I want Oleg Krupa's character to be the same as the one from Burn After Reading because that way The Coens would be a part of the Fast and Furious Universe.

Oh, and this movie was okay.

Yeah, with a $250 million budget, if this bad boy didn't have international numbers it wouldn't be as profitable as it ultimately will be. It'll probably just luckily make it past the $200 million mark in NA.

Scott Eastwood is supposed to be the new Brian I guess.

Can't remember who said it here, but it really is just a M.A.S.K. movie.

I'm glad they showed Roman being capable of actually taking out bad guys instead of just whining all the time.

Yeah, but it is headed to an all time international total. So it isn't really luck.

So, you guys think the next (last) two is gonna be a two-parter? I think thats the best way to do it. One big final story that spans two movies.

If Cipher is still running around probably. All she has to do is rebuild. She was the one that made this the most personal, I'd say make her the archenemy of the entire franchise.
