Agreed. I liked it better than Spidey 3, and Reed got a cooler dance scene than Peter :p

Well I got back from the midnight showing and I went with my cousin. I haven't had so much fun in a long time....this film was TRULY the Fantastic 4...everything was great...even Alicia was in a few more scenes and had some great dialogue to go with it. So much was improved, the score was phenomenal especially the one particular piece of music involving Doom's "ascension" and speaking of Doom, everyone on this board knows I am a Doom fanatic and this movie gave it to me in spades....I was so thrilled to see the TRUE Doctor Doom on the big screen and they even gave him THE line to say...
Then come and get it RICHARDS!
. His armor is fantasic and truly worthy of Doom...Latveria was beautiful, albeit briefly. The family was definitely realized
a lot of talk about starting a family with Reed and Sue...I guess Franklin will be on his way
, the relationships were great and the rivalry with Doom and Richards was great...
I'll hold his hand and guide him through it (Doom talking about Reed)

The Surfer was without a doubt one of the best things on the screen. While Galactus's change didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. I guess because I knew it wasn't the real deal, that the REAL Galactus will show up in time.

However, in conclusion, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer is a truly outstanding effort that redeems the first movie and several of the recent comic book films plus puts this franchise at the top with Spiderman and X-Men. This is one for the books....

aside from how Galactus looked, i thought this movie was great! 9.5/10

better than the first

I enjoyed the movie but it had major flaws, I dont see how anybody could have thought this was better than Spider-man 3. This movie didn't even really contain any fight scenes, just stuff like stopping a helicoptor or some missles. Doom was pointless and got handled way too easy even as Cosmic Doom. The special effects weren't very good except ones dealing with the Surfer. Mr Fantastic dance scenes were not nearly as good as Parkers especially becuase his arms looked to be drawn in by hand. Doom had a good 45 seconds of screen time after becoming Cosmic Doom. I think he was more disappointing here than the first one. Everything was way too predictable. And what is it with people saying they saw a Galactus shadow 3 times? When did somebody recording what looked to be a shadow of a fork get people excited. When are we gonna see a 70 foot Apocalypse or Galactus in a movie? Silver Surfer was cool other than the fact he said about 7 lines during the whole movie. They spent too much time chasing him than developing a true villain. It seemed like 2/3rds of the movie were chasing Silver Surfer and the last 3rd was the capture, interogation, Doom makes his move, Doom is easily defeated, Galactus is defeated like a joke thaty fox is saying we arent gonna give you a reason why he was defeated so easily. If it was that easy for the silver surfer to defeat him than why not do it when his wife was first threatened. Oh no, we have to go through a ton of planets destructions before SS realizes he can fly into the middle of the cloud to defeat him. Oh Well, When everything is done, I will still be buying the dvd, extended dvd, video game, umd, blu-ray, hd-dvd and whatever else. I guess im just still waiting for a truly evil villain in a comic book movie that will really threaten the hero(s). I really hate to complain, i just think if a true comic book nut had the opportunity to make a superhero movie i think we will all see what a comic book movie should truly be. Also, other sequels this year may have been disappointing but they had big shoes to fill. I dont think its much of an accomplishment that this was better than the first.

My god, this was so horrible. I never thought that two movies as bad as Ghost Rider could even physically exist.

The dialogue was embarrassingly atrocious. Nearly every other scene had me wincing at the poor direction and "chemistry" these people had. The "plot" hung together by the barest of threads. Characters sort of just did things and stuff sort of just happened without rhyme or reason.

Galactus is the single biggest disappointment I've ever had in a superhero film, and I've seen the Absorbing Man, people. Doom is, well, Doom. They were never going to get it right, and now they never will.

I will say this, though: they did the Surfer really well in almost all respects. And Johnny, as usual, steals the show.

The depressing thing is that it could have been great. This had the makings of what could have been great. But scene after scene after scene of laughably bad moviemaking just dumps it all in the poop chute.

I thought it was a great time at the movies. Story and Payne (thank god for Payne) really get the FF.

Story listened to the fan base. Ben looked like, well ben this time. It was nice to see Alicia on screen. Doom looked great! I wondered if the armor was just going to be a manifestation of the power cosmic, but no that is Dooms suit from here on out! The Surfer was accurate in voice, style, and look (how rare is that?)! Galactus' power was cool looking on screen. My only gripe would have been to add 30 minutes to the film and extend the Surfer vs Galactus (giant purple dude) battle.

I missed Galactus in the cloud, but everyone else I was with saw him.....

The characterization was good with some development by all of the main six cast members. I understand some of the product placement bothered some folks, I didn't care too much, but I guess it worked because my wife wanted a slurpee when the movie ended...

My son who is six loved the movie and wants to see it again today. These kids are the FF's future, so I'm really glad he liked it. No, I didn't drag him to a midnight show, we saw it at 7PM.

I hate giving numbers, on the pole I gave it excellent. Probably should have said above average, but its the friggin FF on the screen, the real FF this time! 8/10.... Did I say thanks god for Story and Payne?

I really have to address some of the dumbest comments I've had the misfortune to read regarding "Fantastic Four 2 Rise Of The Silver Surfer." Scott Chitwood of the online website "Coming Soon" stated that when we see the Surfer fly around the Earth, he looks a little too much like the T-1000 for comfort. David Germaine of "MSNBC" (AP) also says he thought the Surfer looked like the shape-shifting cyborg of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in his smooth, shiny transition modes. Eh? Excuse me Scott & Dave, but the Silver Surfer was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby 41 years ago. "Terminator 2 : Judgment Day" otherwise known as "T2" was released in 1984 with a difference of 18 years between them the Surfer came first. I remember when I first saw "T2" on the screen and witnessed the then ground breaking effects of the liquid metal T-1000, I thought to myself now they can do a proper "Silver Surfer" movie they now have the technology to bring him to life. Yes the Robert Patrick, ILM creation was first to celluloid but I think Scott & David are being a little unfair in criticizing the look of the Surfer in the Fantastic Four movie. What else could they have done? Made him gold? I think the T-1000 borrowed a lot of it's look from the Surfer so one can hardly criticize the similarities after the fact.

Scott goes onto say that he thinks the biggest problem with "Rise of the Silver Surfer" is Galactus. He makes a sweeping statement pointing out that comic fans are going to be utterly appalled with how the big G is portrayed in this movie. I happen to be a massive comic book fan and I bought and read all the Silver Surfer comic books as a child ( lucky me ) and guess what I wasn't upset or utterly appalled with it at all. Maybe Scott wasn't in the right mind set when he watched this movie or perhaps he lacks the ability to think beyond the possibilities of what he saw or thought he saw on screen. He saw a cosmic storm formation that wasn't on par with the menace that the tornadoes brought to the proceedings in the film Twister. I saw a giant stormy entity and the occasional glimpses of something within those clouds. Something metal or made of rock. Those who know the Surfer source material will be fully aware that Galactus travels through the cosmos in a vast spaceship. This spaceship once parked in orbit around a planet sends down mechanical tentacles to devour the life force from the world. What I saw on screen was a very good modern interpretation of that. In fact in the Silver Surfer cartoon show they depicted the Galactus spaceship surrounded in clouds and Stella debris. Not once in this film did anybody mention exactly what Galactus was or consisted of. As a viewer we can take what we see at face value or we can dabble with the very real possibility that we didn't see the true face of the being known as Galactus the devourer of worlds. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on the latter especially if Fox decides to produce a Silver Surfer spin off movie involving the origins of Norrin Radd and his beloved Shalla-Bal. The condemnation of the way Galactus was visualized comes from idle assumptions. They see a swirly planet devouring cloud and assume that it is him... Angie Errigo ( Empire Magazine ) Matthew De Abaitua ( Channel 4 Film Reviews ) both guilty of such thoughts.

Scott also felt that the worst part of the movie was the way Galactus was defeated by our heroes and how the ending didn't make sense, leaving a very big plot hole. How was Galactus defeated by our heroes? The short answer is...he wasn't. The fab four crash land in a city in China, the Surfer regains his board and source of power and decides to defend the Earth by taking on his master by heading straight into the tumultuous swarming cloud. After a blinding white light of cosmic power Galactus is gone. Has he been destroyed or simply removed from our space and time? The viewer is allowed to make his own mind up as to what events took place, but since Galactus created the Surfer it's an odds on favorite Galactus is simply elsewhere, probably consuming the Surfers home world of Zenn-La as punishment for his heralds disobedience. Maybe this was the deal. If the Surfer violated the agreement then Galactus would take the Surfers home world. I don't think this ending was erroneous it was just left open to interpretation which isn't always a bad thing. Galactus was gone whatever transpired removed him from Earths orbit, leaving the Surfer behind floating unconscious in space. Where is the plot hole? Yes the 28ft tall purple giant going toe to toe against the Fantastic Four & the Silver Surfer in Manhattan and the ultimate nullifier storyline would have been nice, but this worked out well without letting the whole proceedings fall into a pastiche of Japanese giant monster movies.

David Germaine thought that Laurence Fishburne's vocals for the Silver Surfer were droopy, singling out the fact that the Surfer had the power to punch massive holes across the globe but sounded like he could barely keep awake. Bill Clarke of "From The Balcony " online website mentioned the fact that he thought the Silver Surfer was one of the dullest creations in recent film history and thought Laurence Fishburne sounded as if he was just shaken awake every time he spoke. He went on to say the Surfer was an ugly globule of a special effect that spoke in wannabe philosophical ramblings. Hmm, note to Mr. Germaine & Mr. Clarke check the source material out it may give you some insight into the mind of the Surfer. We were given enough information in the film to come to an understanding of the Surfers mental attitude so your statements show a little conceit. The voice pretty much nailed the disposition of a person who who gave up his life to save his love Shalla-Bal, his people and his planet in order to roam the universe looking for planets for Galactus to feed on. How many countless times had he done this? How many worlds and civilizations did he help destroy? Having done all that for who knows how long I really don't think the character's voice would be full of zest and passion by the time he came to Earth. Oh!...Mr. Clarke the Surfer is known for his philosophical ramblings and in fact if there were any criticisms to hand out it would be that there wasn't enough philosophical rambling. Laurence Fishbrune brought a wounded vulnerability and dignity to the role and one hopes he alongside Doug Jones will reprise their roles any further outings.

I also think Mr. Germaine is doing a great disservice to Doug Jones by simply calling him a mime. Doug is an accomplished actor who has had some speaking roles in TV shows and film he just so happened to specialize in body movement and is one of the worlds leading synthetic thespians both in the motion capture studio or behind heavy make up. Check your information more clearly and you'll find, Mr. Germaine that Doug not only provided body movements for the Surfer for WETA CGI department, but he also wore a full prosthetic body suit during the scenes when the Surfer lost his shiny luster.

a really Kiddy movie, with average acting, and a lifeless plot, and Dr.doom still sucks.

As people know, I am a huge Galactus, Doom, and Surfer fan, so naturally, given the news and talk around here, I was a very skeptical guy walking into the midnight screening of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Before I get into my final thoughts and overviews, here are the good, the bad, and the neutral:

GOOD:

Silver Surfer- He looked amazing on the big screen, and Fishbourne captured the distance I have always imagined in the Surfer's voice. His powers looked astonishing, and he was a joy any time he was on the screen. The things with the board being the source of his power didn't bother me, because (when Doom is defeated), we see him hold out his hand and the board came, thus showing a mental link to the board. It was only a certain disturbance that broke the link (hence Doom needing a device to prevent the Surfer from calling for the board and the army keeping the disturbance also). I just hope this doesn't happen every movie he is in now. It would get old.

Acting- People have complained about the acting, but I think it improved for everyone except Michael (given he had a more limited role). Everyone seemed more confident on screen.

Dr. Doom- He sucked hard in FF, but in this movie, I liked him. He is much improved. Here, we see a Doom who actually knows science (figuring out how to maintain the Surfer's power and finding the source of it), one who is intimidated by no one (he attacked the Surfer when he still had his powers), and who is power mad and deceitful. Julian may have been over-the-top, but this version of Doom was written that way. If Doom was right in FF, he would have been great in this, but alas, he was just good.

Humor- I think the humor was mixed in well in this movie. I laughed and smiled at the appropriate moments.

NEUTRAL:

Special Effects- While the Surfer looked amazing, some of the other effects were very hit and miss. Reed looked great at times, and terrible at others. Same for everyone else, too. The helicoptor at the wedding and the rescue by the bridge had some bad effects, while Super-Skrull Johnny and Cosmic Doom looked great. Hit and miss.

Story- The story was large in scale, but didn't feel so at times, and there was a lot of conveniences made for the sake of a short movie.

Galactus- One of my biggest points of skepticism, and really I am not sure how to feel. Galactus is hinted he could be more in the movie (the shadow on Saturn, the face when the Surfer enters the dust), but we are not sure. I can't cry bloody murder, cause that may not be him, yet I can't say it was only a tool of his conclusively. In short, he is not made that clear in the movie. EDIT- I didn't notice a ship, but I did see a fiery face in the center. I heard a noise from him, could have been a laugh or an angry shout. This still could have been the tendrils of the ship, but I would have to look for the ship next time I see it (maybe on Saturday).

BAD:

Runtime- This movie felt short. Leave them wanting more, but this movie would have been even better given another 10-15 minutes to flesh things out more. Things happen far to quick.

No scar on Doom?- Doom needed a scar on his face. There was no reason for him to wear the armor. He does it out of vanity, not to look cool. I don't see this as a nitpick, as this is important to Doom's character.

Score- The score could have been better. The mood felt off a few times. They definately need a new person to score the next FF movie.

Climax- Much like in the first one, Doom was defeated too easily, and Story needs to learn how to do a proper climax. Same for Galactus. The Surfer rebels, and they disappear. It is a very "huh" moment, but that leaves you wanting more, but it doesn't tell you how he is dettered. Also, in the credits scene (when we see the Surfer alive), there is no sign of Galactus. My friend thinks he is dead, but I know that the Surfer's actions in the movie couldn't kill him. So, this needs to be cleared.

All in all, I gave it a chance, and it surpassed my expectations. While the theatrical FF gets a 6.5 from me, this gets a solid 8 (just to let people know my scale a bit, I am not stingy about high scores...I give 10's to movies I think are absolutely great, and I don't look at it like 10 is perfect, for nothing ever is). Much better movie.

Now, does Story deserve another shot? I am going to say maybe. His effects were weaker in this movie as far as the main 4 are concerned, and the movie still has a rushed sense (though it is enjoyable) like the first. His next would be more of the same, and we must ask ourselves if this is an acceptable way to go about FF movies. I have to say part of me says he did better, give him another shot, but the other part says the next will be more than likely more of the same and third installments generally are worse.

Oh, and they better give me a Surfer spin-off now!!!

Again, overall:

8 out of 10

Not the best possible FF movie or introduction to the Surfer possible, but still quite fun.

I liked it.

I'm a dog of few words.

It was definitely a little weird that he put on the armor for the sheer hell of it, but I guess the only explanation is that, judging by the armor we see in Castle Doom, he must have some kind of armor fetish.

But that shouldn't be why Doom wears the armor. He does it cause he can't take even one scar on his face. A metal fetish doesn't cut it.

It just made me go "why" when he put it on. Not like it makes him more powerful or anything.

Who gives this movie a "poor"?

Seems like every movie that comes out, couple people come just to give it a low score. This film had a time issue but it wasn't poor. Jeez.

Maybe he didn't want any more scars. He did take some bullets to the face like 10 seconds after putting the suit on. :oldrazz:

As far as the armor, while Doom is a genius, he's also nuts. He is. He's an insane individual. If he feels the armor adds something to his overall personage, he'll do it.

Maybe Tim Story just told him to wear it so he can make the fans happier.

But he has the power cosmic at that point. He doesn't need armor to protect him.

True, but maybe he was just covering his bases just in case he lost the board. Then he'd be just a normal guy with Electro powers, and vulnerable to ass-whizzos. Or maybe he didn't want to look like a *****e in a nice coat on a surf board.

I don't think "he is nuts" is a good explanation. Doom is nuts for power and his perfection, not for looking awesome with armor.

Is one scar too much to ask for with a 130 mil budget?

Hey, if Surfer cured his little metal issue, how did he still have his electricity powers?

That was another thing that confused me through out the whole movie.

Thats not something Doom would do. He is arrogant and never thinks he can lose. Plus, the only way to stop him was on him. Hard to beat when your that powerful.

It just seemed forced.

think of the filmmakers sitting in their offices laughing at everyone who was so pissed that galactus was 'just a cloud' when they have probably had a plan the whole time.
honestly the only thing that really bumed me out about the movie was how wrong alba looked. the super blonde hair and the fake contacts just make her look well... fake and kind of... unattractive
