FF 2 Rate and Review Thread

WTF was up with Doom this movie? So annoying. Spent most of the time outside the costume and he had some horrible lines.

Best parts...

Doom being done right!

Thing looked a bit better.

Johnny flying outside of Ben's plane window.

SS was done very well.

The Fantasticar Ruled!

Johnny with Super Skrull Powers.

Doom looking like the Emporer was neat.

That one army guy getting what he deserved for working with Doom then getting blasted apart! Tee Hee!

Reed telling off that stupid army jerk.:woot:

Best of the best, Stan Lee's cameo!

lol how could it. :p

My GF thought it was random, i was half expecting H.E.R.B.I.E. to show up after that... :D
I STILL want HERBIE to show up just so Ben or Johnny could take cracks at it.

HERBIE was SUPPOSED to have been the Auto pilot on the shuttle in the 1st film, yes. Ben was supposed to react the same way he did when he found out Johnny was the pilot.

I don't know if Doom was done right, per se.

I mean, if you look he's pretty much a puzzy once the The Torch takes him on. He's disposed of pretty quickly. I would rather see him contained, not disposed of...

One of my fav parts was Johnny flying outside the window hahaha.

SS did looked amazing. Top stuff.

I wish there was more Fantasticar

Johnny's power switching was fun.

Reed was great.

Stan Lee's appearance was great ''I'M STAN LEE'' hahahaha!!!

I wonder if we will get the Skrulls in the next one?

FF2 could have done with alot more action.

Much better then 1. Fantastic should i say?

I enjoyed it way more then spider-man 3, finally a movie that doesnt take itself to seriously.

I think if this had been FF1, then people would have been happier with the franchise.

Yeah doom seemed like he was almost pushed aside. I'm sure there's more film of Doom but I'm not sure if I want to wait a Freakin year AFTER the Theater DVD comes out to pick up the extended.

Overall, I really liked it.
I'm not going to complain about Galactus, because the way he devoured the planets made more sense the comic version. I saw a face in the cloud at the end and the ending seems like he may return in full physical form, because it looks like the Board is searching for a new Herald (probably Frankie Raye), which means Galactus isn't dead.
I like what they did with Surfer too.
I think it was much better than Spider-man 3, and will definantly get this on DVD (Spider-man 3 I'm debating on whether or not to).

I think the board was just going back to the Surfer (he and the board have a mental link, as seen when Doom loses the board and it comes right back to the Surfer), not looking for a new herald.

I wasn't sure about that. The Surfer floated by, and it looked like the board went around him, not too him.
Either way, Galactus will need a new Herald, and my money is on Frankie Raye getting powers in the next film.

I doubt we see Galactus in the next FF movie. I see him having someone like Firelord or Terrax in the SS spin-off.

I don't think we see Frankie anymore, either. She seemed to be there much like Gwen Stacy in SM3. Cool name for us, but doesn't mean much in the movies.

That will be so cool if that happens.

The film was too short, bland, hokey and rushed, and looked more like a reasonably well-financed TV pilot for a series doomed to fail in the first season. Firefly was inifinitely better than this piece of hokum. The only really pleasant surprise was Chris Evans, whose Johnny Storm I wanted desperately to slap with a dead fish in the first one, he irritated me that much. This time he was a lot more fun and far more rounded as a character. Liked his performance a LOT.

Ioan, Michael, Jessica and Julian had bugger all to work with in a script that was at best weak, Doom was a waste of space (not Julian's fault - just poor storytelling) and the whole film was over too soon and didn't even slow down long enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Story's direction was stilted and bland, and I just had the feeling that an almighty rush had been put on the film to get it out on time.

There were a few sweet moments and some fun seconds here and there, but all in all a disappointment.

And as for the Surfer ... well, I liked the CG enhancement well enough, and yes, I could tell it was Doug under all that silver. But he really came into his own in the tarnished Surfer moments. Doug and suit, with only the merest hint of CG to polish it off. Just beautiful.

HOWEVER ... as much as I really, REALLY wanted to like Mr. Fishburne's voice (because if they HAD to dub Doug, I thought he would be a fantastic choice), I was so terribly disappointed - and it had nothing really to do with Mr. Fishburne, and everything to do with badly tweaked audio enhancement. His voice changed constantly from a basso drone (in the forest sequence - and no, Shadow, they haven't changed it) to a rather groggy whisper that just wasn't the Surfer. I could barely stand it. Another rush job that hadn't been worked through properly.

And Galactus? BIG Cloud. Meh.

The Canadian scenery was nice though.

And finally my husband's comments - a man who grew up with the F4 and Surfer comics, and was eagerly looking forward to this film.

"If I was the studio exec who okayed the $130 million budget on this one, I'd want to know right now where the money went - and I'd want to see the receipts."

I agree we needed more Surfer and Doom. That is where the short runtime really hurt.

Agreed with your review in many areas.

I didn't like FF2. They lost there vision for FF, or I don't know if they even had a vision. To much music over scenes, that made it overly melodramatic and corny, the acting was not the there, it looked like the actors, nor director believe in their characters and what they wanted to deliver. The editing was bad, the script was not good. I didn't feel any sense of danger, only at the beginning of the movie when the Silver surfer comes, after it just kinda went down, some parts I thought the movie was going to pick up, as far as serious and sense of urgency, but it didn't. Special Effects had me cringing in my sit, Reed's powers, it just wasn't good. It wasn't funny, poorly writing jokes. Johnny should just went after the Silver Surfer and not talked while he encountered him, it just brought the scene down. It was too unfocused and silly. Silver Surfer gets caught that was so B movie ish!!! By some pulse machine?!! Wow Silver Surfer is so powerful. yeah right. Dr. Doom was the worst villian on screen, to come back and do nothing. Was that Dr. Doom or the Old Guy from Star Wars the Sith Lord. LOL!!! They didn't care about Dr. Doom at all. A villian who inspired Darth Vader and other Villians. He just wakes up, and kill two surgeons, and flies his own helicopter LOL!! What a joke! and why when he was shot by the Silver Surfer, when Doom touched the thing why didn't they swap powers. Because they didn't care about their movie. And doom just carires around his mask and cape!? Wack! Doom on a Surf board?! Wacker!!! LOL!!! And why did Doom survive? They didn't explain that! And if they say Silver Surfer then everybody who was dead in Latveria would raise from the dead. The movie was too rushed and focused on the wrong things that slowed it down and made it boring and irritable. Tim Story, Marvel and Fox they need to have a vision and take their stories and characters seriously and not just throw them away to toys, and PG rating and shorter running times so you can make more money by viewings. Get confident in your story telling and you will not have to worry about if you have to do all those adjustments to make money.

I enjoyed FF1.

FF2 should have been about FF and Doom, and then at the end you see the Silver Surfer coming so FF3 will be the Rise of the Silver Surfer. and the have to work together to get rid of Galactus and Silver Surfer or Surfer hepls do it. But the end of FF1, showed Doom would be back and that was the person you were waiting on!!! Not the Silver Surfer. I would have been fine if FF2 was done differently in that Surfer comes and Doom sees it but you show Doom at this time telling people in Latveria that he was going to save them and the world by Defeating the coming threat. Doom takes over latveria put secretly wants the surfer powers they all fight and some way Doom receives some of Silver Surfer powers, and at the end they all fight each other and team up on Galactus to save the planet. Even to the point that Doom is telling Galatus that "This is my planet and no one shall take it away from me. "The Earth belongs to Doom" they defeat Galactus by Silver Surfer Sacrifice. and after it seems like Doom and Fantastic 4 make a truce that he will live in latveria and nother bother them. They don't trust him but they agree. at the end Doom is running Latveria and you see him sitting on his throne with the power cosmic and people bowing to him and he says to himself now it is my time.

End

Then to the next movie and last FF3 Doomsday.

That's I would have had it those two ideas or even an outline.

That's how it should went.

Okay, here’s my 2-cents on the movie; Overall, it was a better film over the first one, with better flow, and somewhat better plot and dialogue. But there were some flaws, which were very much noticeable. I’ll do the bad first:

- The Running Time for the film was a HUGE downer for me, since the movie moved at a VERY fast pace, and didn’t allow for much in the way of character development. For example, the General was extremely one dimensional and unethical to a level that churned my stomach.
- The “defeat” of the Surfer….hmmm…Well, the Board doesn’t make the Surfer, the Surfer makes the board…it is the manifestation of his will, not the other way around, but that’s an issue of semantics. Also, the surfer CAN NOT raise the dead…sure, he can heal, but I guess Sue wasn’t dead yet.
- Dr Doom, like the Surfer, it was the best of times, it…The Doom Board thing was a bit too easy for me to accept. It was a function of the running time, which didn’t allow for a better use of the Doom’s lust for power.
- Some might not like the crass commercialization in F4, but I actually didn’t mind it that much.
- The torture scene…WTF? Pulling stuff from current day headlines is fine and all…but c’mon…torture of the Surfer…geez. And injecting him with drugs??? W T F…over…He’s not freaking human, so how the heck are those drugs even affecting him, plus the loss of his board, doesn’t make him vulnerable…this “mortal-ization” attempt smacks of the same crap in Superman Returns…it sucked there, and it sucks here.

The Good:

- Surfer…even with the story-device flaw, the combination of Jones and Fishburne was very good. Too bad there wasn’t enough time to develop the character a bit more. Perhaps they should have used this time wasted on the torture scene to develop the character of Norrin Radd a bit more.
- Galactus…I greatest fear was some absolute bastardization of the concept of Galactus, which fortunately didn’t happen, so in my book, that a HUGE plus.
- Doom…I can only hope the disfiguration returns in the next movie. Didn’t look the board riding Doom, but I like the character a lot more, and the armor was nice.
- Plot, it was a good adaptation, where it broke down was the execution (lack of minutes). This seems to be the general knock of the talking head reviewers at Rotten T, better than the first film , but still too shallow. Can’t say I disagree.
- Action…lots more, and I’m not really sure what anyone would have to compliant about? Nothing stunning, but lots of exciting stuff for the kiddies to enough, and I certainly like it all.
- Super Shrull…errr…Super Johnny…that was nice, and fun, and Doom when down REALLY quick…there goes that running time problem again!
- Alicia…nice…while there are obvious visual differences, the core of the character seems to be very well placed thru ought the film. Nice touch of normalcy to the Fantastic elements.

Overall, it was a good effort, and most can agree it was better than the last. Given the level of success this movie will enjoy, greedy a$$ Fox will surely try to get Fantastic Four 3 started in a flash for 2009. The ending leaves the conclusion of this film very much on the table, and maybe the birth of a new Herald?

If Transformers can pull off big robots then FF2 could have pulled off a Big Galactus, unfortunetly, when production started i think they knew the whole time they wouldn't even attempt to do it.

I went to the Midnight Showing this morning with 2 friends who were not FF fans, knew nothing about them, etc. (I’ll talk more about that later) I then went this afternoon by myself so that I could get a better look and feel for the movie….without answering many questions…lol

This is what I found….

A few days ago, I said that I wanted to come out of this movie, laughing some, crying some, on the edge of my seat some, and simply enjoying a summer movie with friends….

I have to say Fantastic Four II hit the mark on all counts for me….

The Story: I had already skimmed the novelization so I had a good idea of what the plot was going to be. I felt that if they could get that story to the screen, it could make for an enjoyable and strong movie. They did it, and I enjoyed it. It was much more cohesive, and much smoother than the first movie. After reading books, sometimes the movie doesn’t measure up to the movie I had going on in my head….this movie did, and that was quite a shock for me actually…..

Payne: I was a little apprehensive of a writer from The Simpsons writing the screenplay for the sequel. I wanted the focus to be the 4, and made that VERY CLEAR over the past 2 years…lol…..Mr. Payne you did just that, and I for one appreciate it. Yes there was comedy, but there was also relationship, stronger characterization, a stronger 4 ALL THE WAY AROUND……and then interwoven into that you brought the Silver Surfer, and a kick ass Doom.

The Actors: I will start off with the most improved, and go from there….

Julian McMahon:
I knew Julian had a kick ass villain in him, I wanted to see it in the first movie, and was very disappointed. I was not disappointed with this one. DID I WANT TO SEE A FULL ON DOOM….yes, very much……but Julian took what he was given and gave a kick ass performance.
Favorite Scene: The first time Doom walks into the room when the general says, we have brought in help.

Ioan Gruffudd: I really felt that Ioan’s main challenge in the first film was #1 crappy lines, and #2 the challenge of an American Accent. I think both of those things weakened his character. Ioan was Mr. Fantastic to me….I KNOW that some are upset that he uses his stretching in mostly funny scenes….BUT to me his stretching is not his strongest power…..to me his strongest power is his intellect, the dialogue brought me the intellectual leader that I know to be Mr. Fantastic.
Favorite Scene: The forest scene with the general.

Jessica Alba: I was not totally happy with Jessica’s performance in the first movie, I don’t think she was as well. I think as with the other actors, a poor script was the main problem, but I also think she has shown that she grew as an actor. Aside from the first scene (Airport Scene) where I thought….OMG that will scare the hell outta me the rest of this film, and totally take me out of the movie…..thank god, someone got smart, and allowed her natural beauty to shine through rather than hide behind 6 tons of make-up….Once that change happened…..Sue Storm appeared on screen in look, and actions.
Favorite Scene: The scene between Doom and Sue.

Chris Evans: Chris did a wonderful job last year of playing the one-dimensional, one-liner character. Unfortunately after awhile I found that kind of annoying. Not Chris’ fault by any measure, again weak script. THIS TIME, I saw much more depth in character, and Chris came through with flying colors.
Favorite Scene: One that made me cry, BOTH TIMES, the scene with Sue when he says their father would be proud.

Michael Chiklis: Ben seemed much more comfortable in his own skin. I know that a lot of that was because Michael himself was more comfortable….lol. This is actually the only character that I was disappointed in the area of the script. I felt he was put on the back burner, and a beloved character like Ben, should never be put on the back burner.
Favorite Scene: Ben and Johnny at the bar.

The character of the Silver Surfer: Doug Jones did a beautiful job of bringing the alien to life. The facial expressions of sadness, anger, and pain was beautifully done. Many know that I was not happy with EITHER VOICE WE WERE HEARING in the trailer or tv spot……but in the movie….once it was all put together……Lawrence Fishburne pulled it off beautiful. The softness was felt as well as heard…..I didn’t get that in the trailer and tv spot, I got it in the movie.

CGI:
Silver Surfer: Beautiful with the shine, and without…..T1000 who?

Mr. Fantastic: I’m not sure they will ever get it to satisfy me, but it was much better than the first.

Sue Storm: Loved the little changes, they looked great. MORE LEVITATION NEXT TIME, AND WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS TIME, SUE STORM GLIDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE SILVER SURFER.

Johnny Storm: IMO no changes were needed, looked great once again

Ben: Bigger brow, I FINALLY SAW IT….lol………still looks very much on the rubber side once again.

Tim Story: I feel very strongly that Tim, GETS the four themselves, I still think he has a lot of room to grow in the area of vision on screen, but OMG this was such an improvement over the last time.
Fox needs to do the following to give him the best chance at a GREAT 3RD MOVIE.
*More money to work with….
*More time to work with, the fast turn around HAS GOT TO CHANGE….
*More control in the editing room. I was fine with the editing, didn’t really see any MAJOR PROBLEMS, but I do not want Hoy back.

Problems that were debated going into the movie….

  • The Cloud: pretty cool looking, I know people saw things and heard things, but I saw nothing and heard nothing both times….lol
  • Galactus: I was not one that was worried with not seeing him, so I won’t spend too much time here….
  • PG: What was the problem again?
  • 92 minute runtime: did not feel rushed to me at all, it clicked along for me. BUT I did want more. 92 minutes of what we had with the 4 was great, it would have been nice to have had a little more development of the SS and Doom.
  • Relationship/Characterization: I got what I wanted….I couldn’t be happier…

PROBLEMS:
*Lack of Ben…
*Lack of Alicia…
*Sue’s wig, and make up artist that I think would make a much better house painter.
*I have to say, lack of Ben again……..I knew we were getting less, but I had no idea.
*Still needs work on the vision end…..
*Still needs work on the Mr. Fantastic CGI…
*Fox

Now what did my friends think……
Comment #1: Wow, that was a cool movie, why didn’t you tell me it was live action, I thought we were coming to a pixar type thing….

Comment #2: Get rid of wig on Sue, she’s too beautiful for such a crappy wig….hair up AWESOME, hair down ok, except for Airport scene….

Comment #3: It’s over, damn I was enjoying that.

Comment #4: There’s gonna be a 3rd movie right?

Comment#5: First midnight movie that I’ve come to that I didn’t fall asleep…..

In conclusion: I enjoyed the hell out of this movie, it had its negatives, and unfortunately some things followed from the first movie, but the positive outweighed the negative for me….I loved the comedy, I loved the relationships/chemistry, I loved the developed characterization. But I wanted a larger feeling of danger from this planet eating being…..I got more danger from Doom, than the thing that as about to eat earth, would more time with Galactus helped? Maybe……..but I think the script could have pulled on that danger more….

8.5 out of 10

and my vote is ABOVE AVERAGE

As always, this is my opinion, I do not see myself as an expert in ANY of these areas. I don’t need people to agree or disagree with me. You go see the movie for yourself, and bring your own opinion to the table.

Kel:yay:

Ditto for me on all counts
