FF 2 Rate and Review Thread

Bishop7- look closer, Galactus is not just a cloud.

Trust me, I was dead center and very close to the screen in an IMAX theater.

I saw a Death Star like gray metal clearly showing within the cloud- poking straight out.

I saw his space ship, some saw Galactus and the fire was his mouth opening- going to have to see it again to see if I can catch what they're talking about.

But there was something in the cloud- he stared me straight in the face.

I just got back.

What'd I think?

Okay, well here are my three main gripes:

1. Too short
2. CGI wasn't that great, it was pretty dissapointing for the most part (except Surfer)
3. It moved too fast at the end, too much like watching a long TV show

Okay so the action was good, better than the first. The PG rating wasn't bad, I'm not thrilled at some of the cornball moments. Alot of the humor was funny though. The end pissed me off. Awesome Doom moments (though the general's death should've been like the the novel's). Some of Doom's lines AFTER he became Cosmic Doom were ******ed. "Niiice" "Let's go for a spin!" and some others. Yeah that was bad.

The ending? Okay, they fight in some mountains, they end up in Japan or China, Sue dies, Johnny gets all their powers, Johnny kicks Doom's ass (pretty good scene though), Johnny throws Doom in the lake, Johnny comes back, everyone's sad at Sue's death, Surfer brings her to life and kills Galactus, they're all happy, Sue and Reed get married in Japan/China and somehow Alicia is there, they fly away, make a four, end.

WHAT. THE. HELL. That was all like a 10 minute scene. The end like that was TOO much like a TV show or something. It happened too damn fast. Way too fast. That was dissapointing. Doom's death and...wow what the hell again. It's like "okay we got rid of him in a fast way let's go on!"
Reed's stretchy clothes? I thought it had to be unstable molecules? Okay then...
His CGI was bad for the most part, his dancing scene was funny, but the CGI was too fake. Wow, what a dissapointment.

I thought when Victor came back they'd be more pissed and suprised than what they were.

Okay so the good? Well it had a kickass story, I did like it. I know Galactus was in the cloud, hints were shown even as Surfer was in there. I know I saw Galactus-like figures. Doom was cool, stupid lines as Cosmic Doom but he was pretty cool. The CGI on Surfer was good too. The action was better than the first, mostly. And the comedy was good mostly too.
There are probably more things I liked, but I don't feel like going into it.

This movie was not, in my opinion, better than the first. Sure it had more action, the story WAS good, but I really enjoyed the first better. And I'm not one who hated the first movie, I did like it alot. The Extended Cut was better though. The first was better because even though it had a lack of action, the story was slower, it moved at a good pace, it was dramatic and funny. If action would've been thrown into it more, I'd probably have thought it was just FANTASTIC 10/10 but that's not how it was.

This one just moved too damn fast. Maybe I have to see it again sometime, and maybe it will seem slower. That's happened to me before. But the end just seemed like the movie's crew was like "Okay we're tired we all wanna go home, let's wrap it up".

They should've made it longer, worked on the CGI more, made the end more memorable, and it'd be great. Cut Doom's crap lines too. I also wanted the original death of the general. Still, it needed to be PG-13 just for a more badass Doom.

My Score: 7/10

Oh I did see the metal poking out of a few places... or possibly just some rocky debris. So I guess there's that. SOMETHING solid is clearly poking out, but the core of Galactus which Surfer directly speaks to and destroys is just a fireball-cloud.

^^I kinda thought the cloud wasn't him but they left it pretty wide open. :(

I dunno if your average viewer can get that?

Then again they probably don't know who The Big G is.

Actually i just remember SS talking about the Big G but did he mention him being an entity beyond the cloud? I forgot.... :(

the surfer reffered to galactus as "HE" twice in the movie ;)
you can see galactus face in the cloud and he laughed when the surfer defied him otehr people in the forum heard that too so im not crazy

^^ That is why I know I have to go back to see it again this weekend cause I know that there are things that I missed. BTW Laurence Fishburne did an excellent job as the voice of the Silver Surfer and Doug Jones was awesome for the gracefulness that he embodied the Silver Surfer with. I mean, the Surfer was regal and I can't imagine him being brought to life on screen any better.

Definitely no face. I was staring intently at that blob of fire.... no face, but maybe on the laugh...

That's the thing the "He" I got but the face and laugh sound like something anyone could miss. :cmad:

:woot:

Correction i missed it! :p ... :(

This review might sound negative, but there were many aspects of FF2 I enjoyed. It was a fun time at the theater, and the audience seemed to be having fun. For me, it doesn't have a high re-watch value though. The first film actually is still my favorite.

Basically, I give Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer a C+ It had its good parts, but overall the film was lacking. It had potential for greatness, but didn't fully reach it, imo. The humor in the film hit all the right notes for me. I was suprised to actually fine the humor funny, and not corny. I hope they edit out the final scene featuring the four in a special edition, though. It was cheesy.

This franchise has great actors, but for some reason their acting in this film (and even the first) were bad at parts. Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffud, and Julian McMahon suffered most from this. I know they are good actors, so maybe the director didn't do enough takes, because he didn't pick the best ones.

The visuals of the film are great. Lots of great locations are covered, and I love the world-wide aspect this film decided to take on. Special-effects wise, all of the FF's powers are equal to what we saw in the first film. I saw no vast improvement on any of the powers. Just more of the same (which isn't really a bad thing). I did like the simplicity of Sue's force fields in this one.

Silver Surfer was my favorite thing about this film. He's a great character, and actually gets to show some character development in this film. I loved seeing him talk about his planet and his love. There were some great touching scenes between he and Sue.

IMO, Dr. Doom should have NOT been in this film. I felt that it was pointless having him there. Besides a fight scene, I found no real reason why he should be there. His 'conclusion' in the film was sad, and forgotten about. IMO, He was not improved on in any way (his new costume looks worse than the first, imo. Also, Julian McMahon is a good actor, but once again...horrible acting in many parts.

Galactus. His 'look' was not even the bad thing. They really didn't spend enough time showing Galactus. He sorta just pops up at the end and quickly goes away. I will agree that the humanoid Galactus would not have worked in this film. Save that for the SS spin-off. I truly believed he was in the center of that 'cloud' though.

Did anyone else see the faint outline of Galactus' face when SS was flying towards the center? If you didn't, watch it again and pay close attention. Maybe my eyes were playing with me, but I swear...:o

Tim Story gets what the Fantastic Four are all about, and I think as a director, he is improving on some things. He truly masters showing the FF as people in society and how they live with their fame. He gets the 'family' aspect down, but everything else needs some work.

Basically the beginning of the film was greatness. The middle lagged. The end picked up the steam, but never truly 'wow'd me because it was so rushed. I will say though, that the final scene with Silver Surfer (before and after credits) got me excited. I'm hoping FF3 really steps up to the plate, because so far they have released two ok (but not great) films. Again...that's just my opinion.

So yeah, C+.

Dr. Doom should have NOT been in this film. I felt that it was pointless having him there. Besides a fight scene, there was no real reason why he should be there. His 'conclusion' in the film was sad, and forgotten about. Anyone who is a true fan of Dr. Doom will be very dissapointed. He was not improved on in any way (his new costume looks worse than the first, imo. Also, Julian McMahon is a good actor, but once again...horrible acting in many parts.

Doom was the highlight for me. McMahon plays it much more sinister and far less campy this time. No bad dialogue, and he kills the CRAP out of bad guys left and right. He comes off way cooler than before, and he's in half the movie... thank god for that, because I loved him this time. Hated him in the first one, and I still wish he had an accent, but he was frickin' sweet in this movie. And the conclusion was perfect, because once again it leaves us with the feeling that Doom is still out there, looming and waiting to strike once more...

I didn't see Galactus, I saw a death star looking space ship- going tomorrow night again though, so I'll see...

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews. Where is everybody?

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I liked it a lot better than the first. I enjoyed the performances of the entire team, including Jessica Alba, who I didn't care for the first time around. I'm still not a fan of Doom, but oh well. Silver Surfer was cool though.

The movie was a bit too short for me, particularly the end, which I thought could have been better. Regardless, I felt it was a better effort than its predecessor.

Overall, not bad.

Edit: Also, I liked the scope of the movie. It was fun watching the characters zip around the world and back again.

Oh was I surprised by this film or what.. I mean the improvement is very drastic! From the get go, you already know that the new one is much much more refined and polished than the first one.
Positive:
1.Reed, Sue, Johnny, Ben, Doom, Alicia- all better this time around (especially Reed, Doom, and Alicia). Reed lets you know that without him, the team won't get nowhere; Doom uses you first then kills you and looks like a sith lord, wow! The characters and their interaction with each other is so fun to watch and carries the film throughout.
2.Silver Surfer- looks and sounds cool. His storyline feels epic in scope.
3.Comedy- less campy, more humor. 80% less forced this time around.
4.Action/effects- I was bored with all the action scenes in the first film, fortunately, all the action scenes in this film geeked me out. From The Thing stopping a helicopter, to the torch chasing Surfer, to Reed saving people with his elastic powers, to sue holding off a ferris wheel, to the fantastic fanatasticar scenes, it's great! And the build-up to these scenes were fantastic.

Negative:
1. The costumes of the F4 looks silly for me.
2. Reed's dancing should have been shortened.
3. The 3rd act was too short for me. It would have been nice to see Doom doing more bad things with the surf first before his final fight with the F4, it would have been great to see Sue's relationship with surfer progress after they save him from the military, Galactus should have been really there instead of that cloud.
4. There are still bad campy stuff but is much much less than the 1st film. A lot were bothered by th product placements, but the Dodge was the only one which really took me out of a rather cool Fantasticar introduction.
5. I was not sold on how this Galactus was defeated, or how Reed and Sue decided they won't disband the team after all (not very subtle).

Overall grade: 7.5 out of 10, 3.5 out of 5, B- (I rate the 1st one 6 out of 10)
If Tim story's directing chops became better coz of reading SHH posts, imagine what he can do with the 3rd film if he continues to read more from the boards. So you're very much welcome here in the Hype Tim! Thanks for all the improvements!

Everyone seemed to love Doom, so maybe I just don't get the character, lol. He was bada$$ in a couple scenes, but I just felt like he didn't need to be there. He came and went. IDK...I was upset with how they concluded his plot in FF2. I guess he'll be back yet again for FF3?

I still have a free ticket, so I'll likely watch the film a second time to see if I have the same opinions.

I'll write my review pretty soon but I have to go to work rght now. One thing I can say though is that in a summer of dissapointing sequels, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer pulls through. 8/10. I'll write a more thorough review when I get back from work.

I don't really have a review to add - I've already posted elsewhere on the board - but I will say that I really, really enjoyed the film. For the areas that people are posting as negatives, hopefully a third film can pick up from this level and go upwards and improve on those.

I wish there had been more, but not because the film was incomplete, just because it's always nice to have more of a good thing.

I saw the suggestion of a face in the storm/cloud, and it surprised me that people who had not seen the film decided there was just a cloud and that was all. I definitely feel, whatever personification you see as you squint at the screen, that the idea is that there is more to see of Galactus down the road.

I just caught the midnite show of ROTSS, and before I hit the sack, I'd just like to say YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!!!!!!!!!

That is all for today. Good night.:woot:

I think it was remarkably bad. The most weightless movie this year. I saw no improvement from the first, I dont know what anyone is talking about as far as Doom being better this time. He was the same lame no-dimensional villian with terrible lines. Johhny had no good one liners, which he had a few in the first. Everything from when the SS is captured on is a rushed mess. Only in the begining scenes did I feel any sense of dread for the coming of galactus or any sense of tension at all. I think everyone is very high on fanboy fumes right now. Doom gets the board and then intends to do what? Just like the first one, he has no plan that needs to be dealt with, just stop Dr Doom cause he is bad and is trying to kill us. Even if you dont care that he intended to just cruise around on the board forever aimlessly because the real threat was galactus, and getting the board away from him/earth so that galactus would go home, its still weak. The SS spends most of the movie standing around looking like a silver drag queen and Susan sacrificing herself for him after his one line of character development "I'm forced to do this, you remind me of my wife tho" was weak as dumb.

I agree. For me, it felt like Doom had no real purpose in the film. He had some good scenes (visually), but the film easily could've gone on w/o him.

I will unabashedly state that I loved this movie.

I predict this will do big box office despite the current lack of critical acclaim, because it has something for all ages. There are a few gags that I'm sure are there solely to make the under-six year olds giggle, but there are serious moments, action, iconic imagery from the comic, and lots of humor.

To me the humor was appropriate to the tone of the Fantastic Four comics.

More tomorrow...

Oh, and I saw Galactus-like helmet shapes three times during the movie:

1. Sue staring at an image appearing on the Surfers abdomen (really).
2. The helmet-like shadow over Saturn
3. A fiery apparition of Galactus helmet shape in the center of the cloud as the Surfer flies toward it.

No purple humanoid Galactus, no purple fart cloud. It was awesome.

Man, I'm glad I'm going to see this thing again in a few hours....

Let's see....

1). Listen for Galactus laughing...
2). Look for Galactus in 2 other places...

anything else I might have missed?

Getting to hear Doom say "Then come and get it, Richards"....that NEVER gets old....will be seeing it first thing in the morning at 10:00...not going to bed...working on a final after I got home from the midnight showing.
