First off, Kelsey Grammer is a comedic actor and he was put in the role of beast, granted Kelsey Grammers roles in tv shows have been more serious role, he is at heart a parody of his genre, like Stephen Colbert.
We also have to look at Alan Cumming, he started his career on a sitcom the High Life which was a very scottishly funny show, he also played wacky and off the wall characters in and out of tv... so how is it he was cast as nightcrawler and didnt think he would make the show not serious?
So i feel your being a little unfair when your talking about Stephen Colbert as if he would drastically ulter the seriousness of the film.
I like the idea of him being a younger senator kelly, i forget his character was in x1. His character should of been more prominate during the future films.
Also, Stephen Colbert isnt the Stephen Colbert he is in real life. The character he portrays on the The Colbert Report is a parody of himself which i think came from a show like saturday night live, in interviews about his personally life he has stated he can be more serious and focused than his character on the colbert report.
