Iron Man 2 First look at Whiplash!

Nice pic.

Will we get a costume upgrade? Perhaps. But I don't think we should invest too much hope in Whiplash ending up in a full suit of armor, or becoming Crimson Dynamo. For the villain in this film, it's clear the character isn't the draw. Whiplash is a pretty obscure villain, even amongst comic fanboys, and this isn't even the same Whiplash from the comics - it's a new character, Ivan Vanko. No, the draw isn't the character, but the actor playing him. The intrigue of this part of the film stems around Robert Downey Jr VS Mickey Rourke. So of course they're going to give Whiplash a costume that shows off as much of Rourke as possible.

As for worries about how he could pose a threat to Iron Man... it's like asking what kind of threat The Joker could pose to Batman. It all comes down to good writing.

I could easily see Tony not taking him seriously. I mean come on, whips? I would start laughing in my badass Mark III armor when someone came along to fight me with whips. So if he fights him, he probably wouldn't dodge and just block the whip with his arm, if at all. And the whips could be electrified, short-circuiting his armor and giving Vanko enough time to do, whatever he's there for to do.

I guess that might work. But why is Stark there? Is he a spectator? I don't think he carries the armor around with him like he does in the older comics. But yeah...I guess Iron Man should make an appearance in that scene. Otherwise it feels like a missed opportunity when you think about it. Lots of innocent by-standers, race cars driving around in high-speed...it sounds like such a bad ass action set piece that it would be odd if it didn't involve Iron Man.

Yeah but the original CD was also a man named Vanko. I'm sure Rourke's character isn't called Vanko for nothing.

It's like I've said, this seems to have a first appearance, early in the film kind of feel about it. While yes, Iron Man has alot of Armored villains, it isn't the bulk of his rogues gallery, most don't wear armor, examples are Whiplash/Blacklash, Blizzard, Spymaster, Melter, Unicorn, Madam Masque, Boomerang etc.
And to be honest, there isn't much more to Whiplash than what we see in the pic, it's exactly what I was expecting once I heard who the villain was rumored to be. Now will they make a new armor for Ivan to wear to confront Iron man, one would assume so,but we will have to wait and see what Favreau and crew come up with.
For what it is, I like it.

Really? I thought I'd heard the name Vanko somewhere!

Yes, Vanko was the original Crimson Dynamo, who defected to the U.S. and started working for Stark International, but was killed later on.

Damn I just noticed that the Finland's national flag is in that picture. At least I think it is. In the left of the picture. White and blue Scandinavian cross. Maybe Kimi Räikkönen throws a cameo. For you who don't know who the hell is Räikkönen, he's our best-known F1 driver :woot:

The first Crimson Dynamo was also the creator of the armor: Professor Anton Vanko. A Soviet scientist of Armenian birth with a PhD, Vanko was the world's foremost expert on electricity. He built a suit that was wired up to perform electric miracles, making him a human dynamo. The Crimson Dynamo battle-suit allowed him to control electricity in all of its forms, allowing him to fire devastating bolts of electricity. It also allowed him to fly.

Vanko was a vain and cocky man, but he redeemed himself in the end. In their first encounter, the Crimson Dynamo battled Iron Man. After being tricked by Iron Man (who made him believe that his Soviet handlers were going to kill him though earlier Vanko's superior implied he was going to kill Vanko, anyway), Vanko defected to the U.S. and went to work for Tony Stark as one of his chief scientists. Soon the Soviets came to kill him for real. They sent their top agent, the Black Widow, and her one-time partner, Boris Turgenev, the latter of whom stole the armor and became the second Crimson Dynamo. Vanko died saving Iron Man by firing an unstable experimental laser light pistol at Boris, killing himself as well.

Vanko's heroic sacrifice was re-visited in the mini series Enter the Mandarin where it's revealed that the Mandarin's son, Temugin was witness to Vanko and Turgenev's death.

i always thought rourke would make a decent omega red LOL

So Johansson is hunting Rourke in the movie?

Tskh, we need Mika Häkkinen cameo rather tbh!

I like the picture to be honest, he looks like a more real world esque Whiplash. Something you might expect to see a Russian build, nothing fancy, just enough to do the job.

Its obviously the early stage of his suit just as Tony went through three upgrades in the first film.

Nowhat I imagined, but he looks menacing, which is the point. Please don´t lecture me about the "iconic" Whiplash look, it´s not like he´s The Joker or Doctor Doom.

The only thing I don't like about the whole suit is he can't hold onto the whip handles. He's barely got a couple of fingers around them in this configuration... which makes me think...

So... Is Whiplash going to be a morphing of Omega Red and Crimson Dynamo - that sound like more of the design idea behind 'Whiplash' - both were Russian, Rouke would make an awesome Omega Red - did Fav's and Marvel out play FOX on this.

Marvel might as well grab the best bits out of Omega Red and use them for themselves - in the end FOX would only screw him up and Marvel are never getting the X-Men rights back.

The backlash this costume is receiving has little to do with resembling the comics character. It's that the costume itself is not impressive.

Whiplash, as he looks right now, doesn't look like he can hold his own against Iron Man. That's the problem.

I don't think that suit is made to take on Iron Man though. The upgrade that he will get off Hammer (which is inevitable IMO) will be specifically to take on Iron Man.

This is what I think also, but we have no confirmation that this is the case. Right now the only reference we have is this picture.

Oh yea of course, it's all speculation at this point.

I think Ivan will break out or be broken out of jail or whatever, then either make the Whiplash suit himself or be given it to take out Tony Stark (who hasn't got his armour) at the race track. He then blows some **** up, goes after Stark. But then War Machine turns up to defend Stark. Whiplash is sent packing with his tail between his legs. Then he gets the upgraded armour from Hammer to take both Iron Man and War Machine on.

For those of you who think that Whiplash is wearing a convict uniform, look closer. Check out the guy right behind him, on the right, see the guy with the orange uniform? He's wearing a driver uniform. So one can assume that Whiplash beaks into the Monaco Grand Prix Circuit dressed as a driver. I don't think this is the scene where he breaks out of jail. My understanding is that Whiplash was imprisoned in Russia and the scene clearly takes place at Monaco so I don't think the two have any connection. This might very well be Whiplash look for the entire movie but then again when asked whether Rourke is playing Whiplash or Crimson Dynamo, Downey answered "a little bit of both"
I look at the picture and I don't see any elements of this armor remotly connected to Crimson Dynamo's. Maybe he meant that they borrowed the Russian aspect of the Crimson Dynamo character but I really think that Whiplash will evolve to become Crimson Dynamo, wearing an armor like that:

First of all I think the costume is ABSOLUTELY BAD-ASS but you just gave me an idea. What if Whiplash is here to attack a civillian Tony Stark. I'd say he'd be quite a threat then. Maybe this is where War Machine comes in to save his ass or Stark just uses his own brilliance to win this one.
