In the early days of the Iron Man titles, Stark was big into fast cars and racing, I suspect that maybe what we have here, Stark either watching or even driving himself when Vanko shows up to attack and unarmored Stark.

The backlash this costume is receiving has little to do with resembling the comics character. It's that the costume itself is not impressive.

Whiplash, as he looks right now, doesn't look like he can hold his own against Iron Man. That's the problem.

first of all its a prototype and it is really just to test the whips out im willing to bet it looks like the endoskeleton of the suit. Plus Micky looks fresh out of prison with his orange jumper still on. This is the equivalent of tony testing out the flight stabelizers in the first one we new that wasnt the iron man suit so why would you think this is the Whiplash armour

First of all I think the costume is ABSOLUTELY BAD-ASS but you just gave me an idea. What if Whiplash is here to attack a civillian Tony Stark. I'd say he'd be quite a threat then. Maybe this is where War Machine comes in to save his ass or Stark just uses his own brilliance to win this one.

That's what I think. I think this pic of Whiplash is relatively early on in the film. He targets the civilian Tony Stark for Justin Hammer. And then maybe this is the entrance of War Machine, he comes in right at the last second to save Tony and scare the extremely outgunned Whiplash away.

Then Hammer makes him a new battle suit that will enable him to take on both Tony and Rhodey in the final battle.

Here's (another) bet:

Whiplash watches Tony's announcement that he's Iron Man. He reads in an newspaper that Tony Stark is attending to the Monaco Great Prix as an expectator. He goes there, kills one of the pilots and steals his uniform. When he gets in front of Tony's seat, he reveals himself and attacks Tony. Tony dodges, and has to keep dodging Whiplash's attacks. Whiplash kills some securities and SHIELD agents protecting Tony, before Tony gets his power gloves (They're seperated, remember? t and uses it to fight Whiplash. The situation keeps getting worse for Whiplash, so, he throws cars at Tony and the SHIELD agents and runs away after destroying an balcony, putting some civilizans in danger. Tony manages to wound him and danificate one of the whips, forcing him to flee in defeat.
