Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns Animated - Part 1

Loved the brutal nature of this movie.

Indeed. The carnival scene really stuck out to me.Straight BRUTAL.:wow: :wow:
i REALLY REALLY liked part 1 but this one BEATS it.:word:
At first wasnt too overly fond of the announcement of Peter Weller doing the voice but he did a fine job for these 2 movies.Artwork was good to me, wayy better than Superman vs The Elite. I liked the story but the artwork could have been soooooooo much better in that movie.

The carnival scene was pretty shocking actually. It actually brought a bit of chills down my spine and that's not a common occurrence with American animation.

In both incarnations superman say's "Bruce, this is idiotic."
Sucks about the monologues though, I hate when filmmakers take it away.

This story and the adaptation are both pretty amazing. Seeing bats throw down in that suit was very powerful. He should have had it for the entire film:woot:

That being said, this being a "kids" property in many regards, I'm very surprised this wasn't pushed back in liu of the recent shooting. Joker pretty much acted out his own shooting.

Lastly, it's elements of these kinds films and this sort of characterization that fuel my lack of interest in the Nolan bats. Just so hard to no be underwhelmed by that stuff after this. You're in for a show the cop says... Here's hoping Snyder goes for it with Superman.

I didn't mean when he says idiotic, I'm sure he says something like Bruce you idiot. I was glad they left out the monologues in the book Batman is very unlikeable.

Loved it, easily my fav. DC animated film.

while we're on the subject of which version of the characters are better, i actually prefer emerson's joker to the comic version. there was an eery, disturbing and psychotic vibe to it and a sense of humour that i didn't feel at all with the comic version. and emerson's voice still had a feminine gentleness to it like the comic as well.
just to continue on this line of thought : i decided to skim through TDKR and re-read some of joker's scenes just now and between that and all star batman , i'm convinced that frank miller either doesn't know how to write the joker or he just enjoys writing him to act the EXACT opposite of how the joker usually acts for the sake of irony.

i mean, everyone complains about how heath's joker was "too serious " , but in all reality he was constantly funny throughout the whole movie, he was just much more subtle than the others. i remember the first time i saw TDK in theaters with 2 friends of mine and they laughed at almost everything the joker said or did, and that doesn't mean heath failed at the joker, just the opposite : he got it RIGHT. he brought the darkness, the twistedness, the sadism of joker's humour to the screen, the same as how emerson's joker did.

frank miller's joker , however : good lord i have never seen a more depressed joker in my life. particularly in that intro in all star. no jokes, no wisecracks, no sense of manic behavior, just constantly moping around for no real reason, rather melancholy. a perfect example of the "sad clown " if i ever did see one. lol

this is all just a matter of opinion , though.

Ahh spoilers must stay out of this thread!! Oh wait, I read this book like a thousand times! :D

Great movie, especially the carnival scene. Emerson's Joker was my most anticipated part of this movie and he exceeded my expectations. I hope he does more work as Joker (in animation or maybe even a live action film).

Yes.

And, I must add, Carrie Kelley as Robin was never convincing in comics version but in the animated form her character works very well.

Also, I felt sad looking at the scene where Alfred got heart attack.

Was anyone really impressed with the animation during the scenes with Bruno vs. Batman and Superman vs. the nuke?

I mean, the DC animation is very consistently top notch, but, holy crap, those scenes really stood out to me animation-wise, especially the latter. The aftermath of the nuke exploding, when Superman is flying in mid-air all emaciated and shriveled, is so detailed and smoothly animated, and the tone and atmosphere was perfect. It was almost like the comic come to life.

Alfred's scene with the picture was awesome. The score in this scene and in the carnival scene is outstanding.

TDKR Part 1 and 2 as a whole is easily one of DC's best work it has ever done. That's not easy saying as they have a ton of winners but there was just so much done right with this adaptation. Music, voice actors, superb animation and of course its reverence without ever missing a step of losing its cinematic quality.

Perfection seriously.

it was very smart not to use the voice over. It failed so miserably in year one. They did a great job at showing what Bruce was thinking. For instance when he tries to climb the rope and realize he needs his legs. It was epic.

Speaking of which. I liked how they used the exact same character models from Year One at Gordons apartment where we see a portrait of him and Barbara.

Can't wait now! Wondered how they were gonna portray the carnival sequence. Though I'm gonna have to wait as purchasing as an import! IS anyone gonna present us with a full review here.

Totally the animation was superb. That scene where Superman nearly dies gave me chills (it did in the book too). Just superb!

The carnival scene was pretty grim. Aren't these animated films for kids? I wonder about those scenes where Joker is straight up murdering people continuously onscreen. Surely the mothers brigade would freak.

My favorite scene was at the funeral. With the heartbeat, Supes and Kelly. The music and everything just came together beautifully there. Very nice. And yeah I wish All-Star Superman got this 2 part treatment. Shame really.

DCUOAM (DC Universe Original Animated films) are aimed Mostly to Us, the Mature Fans, and to some extent, Kids and everyone else.

The carnival scene echoes the times.. Colorado/Connecticut shootings comes to mind.. and TDKReturns aren't for Kids to begin w/ and I woudn't have it any other way.
