I don't know, they could have shown some lords squabbling or something. Or had Stannis make some speech about avenging his brother. Or just address the people. Anything really.

I have to say that Renly's death was just poorly done. Now, I don't know how they did it in the book, but it felt very sudden, and lacked any real impact.

Doesn't help that Stannis just walks in seconds later, and takes total control. They could have certainly handled it better.

This is the first time I've really seen the show handle something really badly. Otherwise though, it was a good episode.

Yeah. I would have done that at the end of last week (again better as an episode closer than opener) and shot it more like the birth of the shadow scene. Dutch angles. Darkness, slow build up. Maybe have Renly see the shadow and face it as it sliced his throat and he could react to his own death. What the show did is close to how it's described in the book, but it just played flat on screen, in my opinion.

Gotta agree with everyone on the death, it lacked any real punch. Expected a bit more especially from this show. Thought for sure it was gonna play out as creepy as the birth scene.

Question for those who read the book. Did the whole thing with Joffrey having the prostitues beat eachother go anywhere? Or was it just another scene to show how ****ed up he is and how he wont side with his uncle? Thought there would have been a follow up in this ep.

Still my favorite show on, but I havnt been enjoying Season 2 as much as season 1 so far. Not too fair to judge it fully yet though. Also hope they start getting into the fights/battle scenes a bit , everything seems to be off screen. Kingslayer VS Stark remains the most memorable fight imo.

The prostitute beating is not in the book.

I actually think S2 has been much better than S1 at this point. I don't think S1 really took off until episode 6 ("golden crown"). Until then, it felt like all set-up. I think S2 took off either in episode 3 (Yoren's death) or last week. It's moving much faster than S1 did and it's not all about building to only a certain character losing his head like last year.

There will be battles in episode 9 and 10 of this season The first of which is supposed to be pretty big for TV from what I hear.

The death scene reminded me of the Wight scene. They shot it quickly and didn't get the tone right.

Still, the rest of the episode? Pretty amazing. No need to tune anyone out tonight.

Well, the weakness of Renly's death didn't have anything to do with special effects or budget, it was just sloppy writing.

Only dissapointment in this episode was of course Renlys death, I knew he was going to die and was expecting a little bit more from the scene. Sad that this season is already half way done.

Not to hung up on the writing, as much as I am about how it was shot. It lacked the "what the hellness" of last week's birth. Just awkward really.

Renly's dead...WTF?!? He was shaping up to be one of the better characters of the season. I will be sad to see him gone

Anyone else think that Stannis looks like Tywin? The actors would be cast good as relatives in a future project

So does Stannis know he's the father to black air?

I still dont get why they killed him at the start of this episode and not at the end of the last one.

There was more of a Renly focus in the last episode and the impact would have been greater...Nevertheless, the best part of the show tonight was the banter between Arya and Twyin.

Stannis hates his brother, why would he avenge him?

And Stannis is pretty much incapable of lying, remember back to his letter writing scene?

But I do agree..his death would have had much more impact at the end of last week.

Good episode this week. Showed you a lot of people and their storylines without feeling rushed or pointless. However, I have no doubt Matt will disagree.

Lol, I await his assessment of tonight's episode.

That's rude. :o

I haven't watched yet. I just couldn't resist the glorious outrageousness that is the Celebrity Apprentice. I DVR'ed and am going to watch during my daughter's nap.

I gotta say I was dissapointed in this episode. For the most part it was fine but I'm more ticked that they robbed us of [BLACKOUT]Is there Gold in the village![/BLACKOUT] later on.
It is good to see Jon's story is about to ramp up. Although I'm wondering how the [BLACKOUT]dragon glass discovery[/BLACKOUT] is going to play out.
Also did anyone catch Bran giving the orphans to the miller? [BLACKOUT]Uh oh...I got a pit in my stomach when I saw that.[/BLACKOUT]

Gotta agree the shadow's scene could have been better. I expected it to get darker in the tent the wind to blow and there to be some Dutch angles. It was shot very plain and kind of like "oh its a smoke, shadow thingy. Well that's cool. OMG Renly." If I'd been Cat I'd have been like WTF!!! IS THIS CRAZY ****!!!

in the books it also slits his throat if i am not mistaken

I think Renley's death at the beginning worked quite well. Remember, it's about who has power and how the game is played. The far more interesting thing is all the smaller lords changing sides right after. Old school politics, can't fight a guy who you are technically allied with at the point of Renley's death.

GRRM seems to have a great way of misdirecting. Showing huge events from the POV of people who are not really directly involved (most of Rob's battles being in Kat's chapters). Or in this case showing the political fallout of the death as it did.

i forgot bout rickon havent seen him in so long!he seems to be as feral as shaggydog

Poor Renly

- I thought WTF when this woman popped up

I actually thought Renly's death was very well done. It was sudden and quick, almost the exact opposite of how I thought it'd play out. And Brienne's reaction was brilliant. A great "in the heat of the moment" moment. And yes, seeing Drogon cook his food was really cool as well.

I kept waiting for them to hook up in the books, but they never did. Don't know if they ever will but it had always seemed to me that Martin was trying to set them up...

I think Renly's death is intentionally at the beginning and quick. In the grand scheme of things, he was just another pretender to the throne made relevant only by his men.

One thing I didn't like was that he basically agreed to an alliance with Cat. Whereas in the book, she just wants to leave after he becomes set on defeating Stannis, he tells her she will after the battle so she can tell Robb what he does to his enemies. He never really had an interest in being allies with Robb since he thought he could take King's Landing on his own.
