Like I say, what makes Ghostbusters Ghostbusters is POV. If Ghostbusters is the original four guys, yeah, you're not getting that. But you weren't getting that anyway. If Ghostbusters is packs, wands, traps, PKE meters, a crazy cool car, containment units and catching ghosts (my POV), then nothing we heard so far makes this Ghostbusters in name only. You can be upset by the actresses or all female cast. You can be upset that if Murray, Ackroyd, and Hudson are in this, they'll be completely different characters. You can be upset at a different continuity. But I still think that anyone who claims this is a Ghostbusters in name only is making a grand judgment with no info. My opinion, I know, and an opinion in the minority at that (when it comes to original fans at least. My friends outside of fandom are very interested in this news).
I really believe that this film could be one of the most hilarious, scariest Ghostbusters films we have ever seen with all of the gadgets and lingo we grew up with, but many of us will cross our arms, kick dirt, say it's "Not my Ghostbusters" and completely disregard it. That would be a shame, really. But that's the nature of the internet and fandom in general.
I don't know... maybe it'll suck. If it does I'll go to the corner, peacefully, and mourn with the rest of you. But what if it's great? Then Paul Feig, of all people, will have paved the way for millions of new fans. Toss a coin, see where it lands, because the odds of either of those happening are 50/50. But right now, the franchise is far from doomed or guaranteed to fail.
