Musical Glee Episode V: The Sylvester Strikes Back - - - - - - Part 15

I honestly feel like they could have cut 50% of the musical numbers in the last hour. As it is, it felt like we really got very little good character moments.

Outside of Unique's I Know Where I've Been pretty much every musical number this season was either dull and forgettable or uncomfortably painful.

I only downloaded like 3 songs, and those were all from the first 2 or 3 episodes.

I havent dl'd glee music in ages. They stopped with creatively altering music ages ago it feels. Most of it is just basic covers

Pretty much.

Just checked my iTunes, S3 was the last time I downloaded anything. Legally or otherwise.

Pretty much every creative aspect of this show fell off at some point over the years. The comedy got weaker, they got less creative with the song choices and how they presented them, they lost all knowledge of how to do a serious storyline without it turning into a goddamn after school special... even the acting fell off, probably because they could sense what a mess the show was.

If it wasn't a Santana cover, I rarely DLed any of them this season.

AV Club had a good (shocking for them) write-up on its huge decline over the years.

Why have I never seen this?

That article did not lie. Though i still wish that FOX had stepped in during s3 to clean house bts.

There are some storylines I am surprised that Glee never did. With these characters, it would have been expected for at least one of them to interrupt a sectionals/regionals/nationals performance by taking over due to them being tired of getting stuck in the background.

I'll never let go. :o

It's funny and sad that Colfer/Kurt had more to do in 2009 then in any episode since like s4.

Now I already want to watch the show from the beginning, thank god i have to many shows to make that happen atm.

And the complete series set looks ugly, not to mention a downgrafe with the first 4 seasons on Blu-ray as opposed to the box set.

The season 6 cover looks like crap too. Mainly because Sam isn't on it, but still. :o

As someone who stopped watching after the graduated from high school in season 3 and hadn't looked back (save for checking out a random episode of season 4 and cringing), I finally came back to McKinley for the finale and it was...ok?

I actually liked the "2009" episode. It was overall pointless and redundant, but in many ways it felt like Ryan Murphy was just nostalgic himself for when the show worked. The writing and characterizations were much sharper in "2009" than they were in the actual finale, and there was a clear handle on the story and characters (of course continuity gave them little wiggle room to not be aware of that stuff). But I still suspect Murphy never expected the show to turn into a pop culture phenomenon and that as it grew bigger, he lost interest. He only planned those first 12 episodes, and returning to what was his original inspiration gave the show a focus on its central original five characters (sadly minus Finn) and Mr. Schu, who was an actual character during the first 1.5 seasons.

Relying on "Don't Stop Believing" shows that they were trying to recapture the magic of those early days. Obviously, they couldn't really since they had to rely on the actual finale of the "Pilot" to end the episode, but it was nice to see a focus on the core cast that started it.

As for the final episode.....I actually liked Sue becoming Vice President? It was bizarre and made no sense as I assume she got fired when the school became an arts school but it was funny. Also, Will as principal and Sam as the new Glee Club coach made a whole lot of perfect finale sense to me. It's nice that they showed not everyone has to be a Broadway or pop music star to have a "happy ending," and it made a great deal of sense that Sam would follow in Will/Finn's footsteps (as this was obviously Finn's ending).

As for the Rachel, Kurt, Blaine stuff: I liked "Daydream Believer" just because it was the one song in the finale where they actually appeared to be having fun like the old days, Darren Criss' terrible wig not withstanding. But their endings overall just felt too sugary for my taste. Sue Sylvester is a cartoon character, so her as VP is ridiculous and fine. But Rachel winning a Tony, Kurt and Blaine also being equally successful Broadway and theatre stars, and Rachel agreeing to be their surrogate? Gag

With that said, I do like the choice of her ending up with Jesse instead of apparently Sam as Finn 2.0. Rachel is very much of New York not Lima. Sure, Jesse was a *****ebag in high school, but Rachel wasn't the nicest person in the world at first either. That made sense.

The only other thing I have to say is why did Quinn, Santana, and Brittany not get closure? I really haven't watched the last couple of seasons, was there something more for those three in there? Because honestly, I always enjoyed those characters more than a lot of Murphy's darlings, and it was weird that they were brought back to be back-up singers in the final song, but otherwise had no roles in the last two episodes.

Oh as for downloading, I downloaded a bunch of season 1 music (I am now somewhat sheepishly ashamed to admit) in 2009 and 2010. Some songs from Season 2. And I think I downloaded like one or two tracks only from Season 3. Kind of like the show and its sliding scale of quality.

Quinn's story pretty much got wrapped up halfway through Season 5 when she and Puck got together and rode off into the sunset. She was only a sporadic guest star after Season 3 anyway though.

As for Santana, she was a main character in like, the back half of Season 4, and lived together with Rachel and Kurt in NYC for a while, but then during Season 5 her role kind of dropped off (supposedly due to behind-the-scenes feuding with Naya Rivera and Lea Michele). She and Brittany got married earlier this last season in a double wedding with Kurt and Blaine.

So Quinn/Santana/Brittany had all pretty much gotten their endings already before the finale.

So 2009 was about showcasing Rachel back when she was annoying. Man I hated her back then and they captured her perfectly

Where the heck were Quinn, Santana and Britney in that episode? Missed opportunity to not have them there

Well... in the first glee episode, the unholy trinity were pretty much glorified extras. It would have been fun to include them. But i can see why they weren't

They could've just used them to torture the OG5 or do something to develop them a little more like they did with Sue/Shue.

But they did goof up since Karofsky was a Hockey player I believe in S1 and not Football.

Considering what a hot mess this show became, I think it's amazing they even got accurate costuming in the 2009 episode.

Saw this recap on another site
Fun little notes from the cast from a Q&A at a Paris convention.

Darren said he saw Jenna as the MVP of Glee, because of how much "****" the writers put her through as Tina. (Back to an Ellen interview last week, Jenna said she was never really allowed to say no to doing something (like being Carrie'd), when Lea and Chris said they would say no if they didn't want to do something and it was all fine. Jenna said she didn't feel like she was allowed to.)

Jenna said she often was wondering what the **** was going on with her character each week and "Tina get songs cut off all the time."

Yas, they're starting to speak out against the writers, yaaaas! :jd:
