Gravity - Part 1

Go back to the Jennifer Lawrence thread if you can't acknowledge mature women beauty with or w/o botox.

Note : I am cool, no animosity from my part, just regular forum joust.

Sandra Bullock is old enough to be Jennifer Lawrence's mother, although you couldn't tell. She's kept herself well in shape.

Ya know, if they looked even remotely alike, I would really want to see them play mother/daughter in a movie. I'd still like to see them in a movie together regardless, as I think they'd play off each other quite well.

There's a vocal minority that hates this movie, I think they're being contrarians. I specifically can't stand people who say they didn't like how the physics was handled.

^ I've seriously never encountered this post-release.

Just wondering if my interpretation of the movie is correct:

Ryan Stone is in a rut as an individual at the start, just going through the motions in life. By being forced to be tremendously challenged, by facing danger head on and pushing herself, she is reborn.

Is that the movie? That pushing ourselves leads to vitality?

It's not a standard Hollywood message.

Haha it's the internet.

But seriously I've never seen or met anyone who actively hates the film. I think it's just wasted energy to hate the film anyway. Even if its not ones cup of tea, more films like Gravity should be encouraged.

I stayed at two people's house who hated the movie the other day. They kept negatively contrasting it to Kubrick's 2001 and Polanski's The Tenant, which they had also seen recently.

But it has a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (86% audience score) and 100% among top critics, indicating nearly universal likeability.

There will always be haters. No movie will ever please everyone.

Deja vu as I said that about Catching Fire too. Great movies aren't always going to get universal praise. There will always be someone who doesn't like a movie for whatever reason, valid or not.

Do they hate it or just don't think it's quite as good as the reviews (which are unbelievable)? Seems like a hard film to hate.

I'm definitely getting the blu-ray DVD for Gravity.

I didn't like that she survived. Ruined it for me. That shot when her feet are in the wet dirt at the end was a really powerful scene and I'm not saying that this wasn't a good movie just that I found the fact that she survived any of it just totally unbelievable. Soon as that first collision happened she would've been straight screwed.

Why this movie felt the need to be an epic action film I will never understand. The character is stranded in space which is pretty screwed as it is but then she goes through all these other over the top obstacles that really took me out of the movie.

Im sure i wont be the first to say this but the scene where
George Clooneys character has to unlink him self from Sandra so she could survive was pretty stupid. I know someone said before that people complaining about the physics in the movie is stupid but that scene just made no sense.

However I did enjoy the movie when I finally understood what kind of movie I was watching.

 Exactly my nitpick with the movie. All this coincidental action obstacle one after another, was annoying and didn't help with the suspension of disbelief. When watching it, I expected it to be more of a philosophical piece of cinema with an epic revelation in the end ala 2001, but was disappointed. Kudos to the filmmakers though for the excellent camera work and beautiful cinematography.

I am glad i am not the only one. I had been avoiding any spoilers about the movie since I knew it was going to be made. I knew the very basic premise but I didnt want to know anything else. I too had the impression it was going to be a quite philosophical piece with Sandras character floating about in space. As soon as
George Clooneys character turned up next to Sandra my whole expectation had changed.

What kind of epic revelation were you expecting? Bullock's character journey really had only two outcomes - she was either going to live or die.

I couldnt work it out, but I was excited knowing that there had to be some conclusion to what i thought was going to be the film.

It started out as something cool but quickly turned into Speed 3

Like I said though i still enjoyed the movie.

I think you may have put the film on an unfair pedestal expecting some philosophical meaning. It's a spectacle pure and simple, just an extremely well made one.

Its more than that though, for what ever reason i just thought this movie was going to be very "realistic" and not the over the top action movie it turned out to be. Even the dialogue was a bit cheese ball.

I was never a fan of the casting too when I first heard it announced and after watching it I still found it to be jarring. As viewers we know George Clooney and Sandra Bullock too well for us to "believe" they were actually in that situation.

What exactly is it that makes a it a great film? Is it the effects and how much of a thrill the movie is? Because it did look amazing and it was intense.

(I am not trying to hate on this movie as I do like it, I just havent discussed with anyone the problems and expectations I had.

A big black monolith in space :woot:. Well I don't know, maybe something more unexpected, besides her struggle to survive in space, and even that started to become boring and fake with how she survived one wave of obstacle after another. But it may be just me for expecting an epic, philosophical revelation and not getting one.

Yeah, I think they missed a huge opportunity to make something more epic than an over the top action movie in space.

An action movie that has great pacing, likeable characters, great visuals (cinematography, effects, editing, stunts, costume, art direction, make up,etc), great sound and music, is a great movie. It's like you're saying action movies cannot be great.

The director wanted to make an action movie with some depth and he achieved that 100 percent.

It's like saying Die Hard is not a great movie because it's an action movie and it could have been deeper and tackled issues like the effects of husband and wife separation on children ala kramer vs kramer. Sheesh.:o

Please dont get me wrong, I very much enjoy action films. T2 is my fav movie of all time. I agree with you that the film had many great things going for it. Its a beautiful film to watch. I was genuinely asking what people liked about it. It is very much at the high end of action movies its just not what I expected though. Which is fine

Well, this film was not trying to be the sequel of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
