I think he has overworked himself a bit. In the past two years, he's been in like 3-4 movies plus the third season Sherlock.

Though I like the theory that he dropped out due to Star Wars.

I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped out to play in Star Wars. I never truly bought that he just dropped out for no reason. My mind was more on Superman/Batman than anything else though. My sister and I saw Into Darkness again a week or so ago and I brought up the possibility of Cumby doing Star Wars. I hope the rumors pan out.

Also I hope that Del Toro finds a good replacement for him of course.

You know, when it was announced that Cumberbatch bailed, I immediately thought of him as a replacement. And, lo and behold. t:

This film has a cast, that's far further than most of his projects get.

Really though, GDT is just really open with the things he has in development at any given time. Other filmmakers, Spielberg for instance have just as many projects fall through or they just walk out on them.
