I know it's a stupid thing to moan about when discussing Superman, but I always thought those powers were a bit daft.

Same. I like all his powers to be sun themed, so I like his new solar flare more than super breath. And, freeze breath doesn't even make sense unless his lungs are like a refrigerator. Blowing air harder doesn't produce cold.

It's because his breath is always winterfresh. That's why he's such a hit with the ladies.

Actually the air that we humans blow with our lips close together is like a cool breeze. Take that to its superpower extreme and you have Superman's arctic breath.

Except the Mad Love is right and the mechanics don't work.

The air from your mouth is hot, pursed lips simply entrains more ambient air into the stream so that it's cooler by comparison. Blowing alone will never bring cooling significantly below ambient temperature.

There's no mechanical reason why the power should work. He might as well shoot freeze blasts from his hands.

So basicly like any superpower ever.

Confirmed: Superman Knee's the batmobile... This is so awesome... lol

I want to think he gave it a just a little love tap of a kick.

is it me or is it a bit hard to make out that supes is kneeing the batmobile on the first views of the tv spot. I just though the car crashed into supe's legs and bounced off I just noticed the knee rising after watching it like 5 times.

I also think the bit with bats threatening supes looks a bit too dark like you can barely see affleck's right eye. or the suit for that matter. Other than that the scene looks pretty cool.

No kidding. :funny:

Arctic Breath and Super Breath are unique and awesome. I want to see them both. It doesn't ****ing matter if humans can't blow cool air to a great degree-- we can't fly or shoot heat beams out of our eyes either.

I don't think he's actually kneeing or kicking it-- It looks like a reflexive "protect my balls" kind of motion. Like when you're playing with a dog or a child and they run at you, you kind of pivot your hips away and raise your knee, just to shield the meat and two veg.

I can't imagine Supes feeling the need to protect himself in that way from a car of all things. I'm sure it was intentional, because he wanted the car to slide into the wall exactly as it happened. I think we'll be seeing a Superman with a much greater grasp of his strength.

I'm correcting your attempt at correction. Mad Love raised mechanics, but your reply wasn't that mechanics are irrelevant to powers, your answer was, "Actually... it works like this..."

Except that it doesn't.

Which was what Mad Love was saying all along.

Which is why it's better if superpowers stuck to a theme instead of anything goes like going around the world to reverse time or throwing his shield.

If that's your point, then you basically accept anything. Why not have Superman shoot mini-me's out of his hand?

If Supes just stood there, it would be the equivalent of driving into a lamp post - he indeed directed it away...into a wall.. lol

Forgive my ignorance about this, but in the MCU does Cap's shield have some sort of tech embedded in it that makes it want to try to return to him? Like the vibranium is magnetically oriented toward the soldier-serum modified iron in his body, or something along those lines? (Sorry, I know this is OT, but just curious.)

He doesn't need to cover his face when the dream Black Zero touches down and blows dust everywhere in MoS, but he does. Nor does he need to protect himself by raising his face with his arms when the bullets are striking him in the last trailer, but he does. It was a reflex that adds a very, very little touch of reality to the moment. Why would he even want or need the Batmobile to stop in a particular spot a few meters away, and why would raising his knee be the best way to do it? That doesn't make sense...

Vibranium has special properties with kinetic energy so it maintains its speed when the shield bounces on its side, but the curve allows it to absorb energy from the front.

As far as returning to him at the right angle, Cap basically developed the skill at throwing so that the last bounce comes back to him.

You're right, my intention was to ultimately insinuate mechanics were irrelevant. I should have done so better.

Besides his heat vision none of his other powers run with the solar power theme. How does solar energy grant him see-through or telescopic vision? How does it allow him to simply hover and fly at supersonic speeds by sheer force of will?

Actually they do... because it's light. Vision is simply how light reflects to the eyes. X-ray and telescopic vision means Superman can see light reflecting farther away and at different light spectrums.

You know what flies and at very fast speeds? Light particles. They are electromagnetic. As for his super strength, that's his cells acting as solar batteries.

That's an adequate SciFi explanation.

Basically to you Superman is light inexplicably made flesh.

Do you also rationalize his super hearing as being able to hear light?

Not just to me. He's been referred to as a sun god by practically anyone who writes him. Characters are built on core concepts, but to you it must be all random.

I guess hearing is all you have left to stand on, but that's like his eyes and muscles. It's normal biology. He doesn't have freeze breath on Krypton that gets improved by the sun. Seeing and hearing are normal body functions that are strengthened by solar cells. They're not new abilities.

We are having nice conversation please lets keep it that way, you are starting to sound a little antagonistic.

I guess the way I see it is if sunlight super charges his hearing and strength, then why can't it supercharge his breath? In the link provided by Mainline it says:

"If you create a jet of fast moving air through stationary air it tends to drag the stationary air along with it, essentially due to friction. This is called entrainment, and the effect is stronger the faster the air jet is moving.

When your mouth is open the air coming out will entrain some cold air, but the air which reaches your hand will still be dominated by the warm air from your mouth

But when your blow hard through pursed lips the jet is moving a lot faster so it entrains more air, and there is less warm air there to start with, so most of what reaches your hand is colder room air. Although this air is slightly warmer than the air in the room it moving so it is much better at removing heat from your hand both by conduction and evaporation so it feels cold."

Edit: Why couldn't his breath be so powerful that it completely removes the heat from what his breath touches effectively freezing it?
Edit: By the way if I've come off as antagonistic I apologize.

Thank you. I can't believe some are complaining about a power Superman has had for decades. A power that looks cool when he uses it, at that.

Pisses me off that of all heroes in comics/movies, Superman is the only one whose powers and portrayals are nitpicked to death.
