How I Met Your Mother - Part 2

I thought they were fighting cause Barney called her fat?

Not a fan of the Robin subplot tonight, it's a bit out there. Although to be fair, I felt the same about Marshall's dad last season and it really fit the season as a whole so we'll see...

Wait...you thought the story about Marshall's dad dying was too "out there"? That's one of the most ridiculous things anybody could ever say about this show. Or about anything ever.

Yeah, I think they will reveal his wife in the finale of this season, and something tells me its going to be a twist, like just when it seems like Barney and Quinn are going to make it, they do something like reveal Robin as the bride. I'd hate it if they did that, but I feel like its going to be a surprise cliffhanger that keeps us wondering what happens in the future.
but thats the biggest problem. it would in no way be a twist. :cmad:

By out there I don't mean unrealistic because obviously death in real life is sudden and traumatic. But I do remember some posters on this board and others I frequent saying that the end of that episode was such a jarring change in tone. The ep was about the crew trying to figure out whether Barney was posing as that doctor, mostly comedic in tone and then BAM.

I kinda feel the same way about this ep. Super comedic ep (even more than usual with the snazzy flash cards) and then suddenly super dramatic moment that I didn't really feel mainly because I dont feel like they built up to it or earned it.

With the Mqrshall's dad ep I was wait and see, and the dramatic shift tone was something that really fit the season and the eps following. I'm wait and see about this too, whether it was a dramatic moment that will be cemented by it's placing within the greater story of this season or it was a dramatic moment that was unearned and therefore had no dramatic power.

well, it is a sitcom. They only have 22 minutes a week to tell an independent story, and contribute to the season as a whole. And...it's a sitcom. Nobody would actually wear a dress to pick up a phone number to win a fake numbers game. Just like nobody would actually land a helicopter and become famous overnight for it. And definitely, nobody would date a stripper. :o

Nothing felt unnaturally "suddenly super dramatic" to me. It all built up fine.

I recently wrote an essay based on whether or not sitcom was an inherently conservative genre. It's quite an interesting topic when you look at the origins of sitcom and where we are today.

I think we are in a place where sitcom is changing, because it's blending in many elements that other tv genres use eventually i can see the genre going one of two ways - either the general consensus of what a sitcom is will change or a brand new genre will appear that encompasses sitcom but with these other elements.

I wouldn't consider that twist. I think most people think it will be Robin.

Yeah, sitcoms have definitely changed over the years, and I believe Seinfeld is the show that is usually considered to be the one to break the mold. But one of the things I love about HIMYM, and is the reason why I watched every episode in the first 5 seasons during a week was because its never just about being funny. The humor is a major part of it obviously, but what has always stood out most to me have been the "life lessons" that are in most of the episodes, particularly when it comes to Ted reflecting on certain things, and its something I have learned to incorporate into my own life and view of things.

I think the show does a great job at balancing both the humorous and serious issues, and we've seen a bunch of cases lately like with Marshall's father's death, Barney's father and Robin being unable to have children. They've managed to pull off several touching moments without coming across as cheesy at all, and I think I enjoy those moments most, especially since its still a show that can keep me laughing.

Well I mean twist in the sense that it won't be the obvious choice. Like I don't think the show has ever done something where they went the predictable route. They may foreshadow so that it doesn't seem like something out of left field, but they usually always have some kind of twist to keep things interesting.

Maybe the bride won't be Robin either. Maybe it'll be Nora and next season will focus on her. Maybe not. But I just think that if things are going too good with Quinn now, then its a sign that its not going to work out. I also feel like its risky revealing the wife now to a wedding that is still a while away, especially since its about the mystery surrounding who she is.

A great twist would be if Quinn turned out to be Barney's sister, it can be the Game of Thrones themed episode. :cwink:

And you're entitled to your opinion, I just feel otherwise.

That's interesting. And certainly HIMYM has bended the genre in a fantastic way. You can tell just by the fact that shooting an episode can very well span three days, whereas a traditional sitcom will usually shoot for just three hours.

Yeah I looked at Cheers and stuff and compared that to more modern day sitcoms like HIMYM, compared them to Friends which arguably is the most famous sitcom in it's history and then looked towards the future by using New Girl as the example - which has all the settings of a sitcom but misses quite a few key elements.

Then looking at UK sitcoms and where they have come and where they are now you see that whilst US sitcom has evolved quite a lot - UK sitcoms haven't and stick to the same formula, however it works. Mrs Brown's Boy from last year was a true sitcom and it performed very well over here.

Here are some pics from the finale.

That last pic with Robin, I am going to predict [BLACKOUT]that the guy in the bed is her secret crush from last season (S6Ep21 "Hopeless). Future Ted said that they were not finished and he would talk about them later. I still say Barney is going to marry Quinn, but it will be alluded to that it doesn't last long.[/BLACKOUT]

Didin't Kal Penn's character Kevin fill the role of the crush? Since the original actor went on to do some other show.

Yeah, Kevin filled the role of the romantic interest they planned to give her for this season, but its wasn't supposed to be the same guy that she has a crush on.

New episode tonight, or no?

whats with all those breaks? didnt they have a big break 2 weeks ago?

I thought we were going to have the rest of the episodes air straight through until the finale. These mini breaks suck.

Judging from the promos, I think tonight's episode is the one with Barney with the Ducky tie and getting that phone call and looking surprised. Maybe it will lead in to Lilly's birth?

another continuity error? what the ****?

Ted never trying online dating? That was kiiiiinda a major plot line in season 1. Love Solutions has showed up in this show multiple times.

For a show that has had such tight continuity up until this season, they are dropping the ball a lot.

I never considered Love Solutions to be online dating. It was more of a match making service.

Yeah, that didn't count as strictly online dating.
