If anything, I strongly believe Barney is dead in the future, at least at the time of Ted telling this story. We know he's alive in 2017, but he is never shown in any flash forwards after, or when everyone else is old.

We have evidence of Barney being alive as late as 2021, nine years before Ted talking to his kids (The Exploding Meatball Sub, set in 2011 has a flash forward of ten years where Barney finally seeks revenge). That is the latest known appearance of Barney but there have been a few present tense references to him by future Ted scattered throughout the series.

Lily and Marshall have both been revealed to be alive in 2030 (when Ted is telling the story) as Ted says in the present tense in Slapsgiving "We go to Aunt Lily and Uncle Marshall's house every Thanksgiving....here is the story of how that tradition got started," (or something along those lines).

It is probably safe to say that Robin is alive as well. Though the latest known appearance of her is also Exploding Meatball Sub, Ted does say in the first Halloween episode, "You know how your Aunt Robin loves Halloween and always wears elaborate costumes?" Loves, not loved. Wears, not wore.

When you factor in all of this evidence, it seems very unlikely that any of the characters are dead in 2030 (when Ted is telling the story).

I just feel that your instincts are wrong. The writers of this show have been VERY careful in maintaining continuity. They're not going to slap on a twist like, "Oh, by the way, Barney's dead," when they have negated the twist on many occasions by future Ted talking about him in present tense.

Please correct my inaccuracies, as I haven't watched past episodes in a while, but haven't the flash fowards confirmed the lightsaber is on the market in 2013, and that time travel is a viable thing in 30 years? I distinctly remember old Marshall watching young Marshall at the bar.

Nothing says that in their fictional universe, those things won't happen. Sitcoms take plenty of liberties for comedic effect.

She was hurt with the break with Ted and clearly trying to save face.

Or she doesn't consider dogs to be things.

Or it was an honest mistake.

OR someone went back in time and rewrote history to where that never happened, and something about you makes you an anomaly that remembers the old timeline when your memories should have been amended to only 'remember' the new.

Oh, no sorry, I wasn't questioning the validity of it or complaining about it. I think it's awesome and hilarious. I was just wanting confirmation of those facts so that I can feel an appropriate level of rage and jealously that Marshall will have a lightsaber by 2013 and I won't.

I find all the geek/nerd happenings in the show to be quite hilarious. A fictional show should take some liberties with suspension of disbelief. Especially when all three male leads love Star Wars.

Ted's got the holographic phone in 2020. Why not a lightsaber?

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. I hope it is Robin too. Like I said, the novelty of female, stripper Barney would wear off very quickly IMO. As for Nora...she didn't love Barney. She loved the idea of changing Barney into someone he wasn't. Robin accepted Barney for who he is and loved him anyway. They should be together.

Didn't they have a lot of fights, because she didn't didn't like the stuff he did, because they were so Barney like? Like the strip club? Or because he was filming them while they had sex? All the typical Barney stuff and it ended in fights, fights, fights. And let's not forget that she forced him to give away his porn. So Robin actually tried to change Barney. Which is something I really didn't get from Nora. It was Barney who actively tried to change himself.

Then there's the fact that they both are Alpha Dogs and both didn't want to be canceled out anymore. I thought they made it perfectly clear why they didn't work. I'd hate for them to erase all these reasons and put them back together.

I for one hopes that Robin isn't the Mother. I mean what's the point of "Bob Saget" Ted telling his kids and referring to her as "Aunt" Robin, and THEN have a twist at the end revealing that she's their Mother???? Why go into all the trouble of calling her Aunt Robin throughout the course of the series only to have her turn out to be "The One."

I thought she was going to be Blonde anyway? But now that I think about it the kids wouldn't even inherit her hair colour if that was the case.

I dont see how any of them will be dead. why would barney be at ted,marsh,lils college reunion. so that's whys hes not there.

but him being dead would be a downer, and the creators for the longest time want everything happy for the 5 or 6 with the mother.

Well judging from the past couple pages some are speculating just that. If that happens I'll be severely pissed off!!!!

People aren't speculating that. We're talking about whether Robin will end up as Barney's bride or not.

Well if that's the case I actually like Robin and Barney being together, especially back in Seasons 4 & 5 when inklings were put in play. Made you want to root for Barney even more. It was in a sense, a little sweet.

If they do not have Barney marry Robin I will be pissed. Barney and Robin just seem right Ted and Robin seemed forced much like Barney and Nora and Barney and Quinn. So I hope next Monday we see that it is Robin who he is going to marry.

I think he meant post-third or fourth season. They really hit home at the end of the second season that Ted and Robin want different things in life.

I really wasn't feeling the Ted/Robin relationship when they brought it up again this season, I'm really excited to see the love story they put together for Ted with somebody new.

ted and robin should have lasted a season which it did and then bam finished. once they bring it back up again and again it feels forced.

Exactly. With Barney and Robin the seeds were planted for them back in season one and it just kept on growing from there. That's why I say they feel right. Ted and Robin as said before by others should have lasted only one season and then it should have been done with. To have it brought up season after season after season and to make it the reason why none of Ted's other relationships didn't work out just makes it seem forced. Barney and Robin don't however because IMO they grew together. In the first season you have the settle hints of something there between the two and it stay through out the show to the point where two people afraid of commitment entered into a relationship together and both still have very strong feelings for each other Robin is afraid to act on them and Bareny was hurt by her so he won't let those feelings show. Where Robin's feelings for Ted are more of I love you but not in that way anymore and Ted can't seem to handle that.
