This made me laugh more than it should have.
I was trying to think back... have we really never seen Ted eat/or talking about beacon on the show before?

Swarley! Robin's sister! …[BLACKOUT]And the Mother is dying...[/BLACKOUT]

What did they say on that last bit that made Ted tear up? I missed it. Looking at booty on Instagram.

Sigh.

It's confirmed.

The mother is [BLACKOUT]dead, and that's why Old Ted is telling the story.[/BLACKOUT]

What kind of Mother misses her daughter's wedding?

The Mother mentioned that there's no a mother, particularly Robin's, would miss there daughter's wedding. Or rather, "What kind of Mother" would miss their daughter's wedding.

And that made Ted tear up. IMPLYING, what has felt greatly implied since the beginning of the show:

[BLACKOUT]The Mother is dead. And at the time of that particular flashback, she's dying.[/BLACKOUT]

Ugh, I don't like this, it feels like a twist for a twist's sake. Nothing really supports it, at all. Not the tone of Ted's story...none of it. Ugh. Of course, there's always the chance she is in remission.

Or that the tears weren't for The Mother.

The only other possibility I see is Ted's mother dying before his sister gets married. Unfortunately.

Seems a bit late in the show for that to be what they meant.

Carter Bays said there's a twist at the end and since this has been implied in the 5TH last episode no way is this what we think it is. There has to be more to it.

Yeah, the tone is just too casual for her to be dead or dying. Maybe remission is the reason Ted is telling the story? Its the day she was released from the hospital and finally beat her fight with cancer or something?

I just had an awful, terrible thought. The mother is dead, some time has passed between her death and Ted's story. That's why the kids are bored because its been years and they have heard the abridged story before. The reason Ted is telling the story in detail is that it's the only way he can move on and then he announces that he's going to start dating again. Because that's what the Mother would have wanted because that's how she found Ted in the first place.

So I'm now worried this is going to happen. Especially with the Mother telling Ted to not live in his stories and that life moves forward.

That's not the only explanation that the mother is dying or is dead as the reason why Ted was crying. It could have been that the mother's own mother missed her wedding to Ted, either because she was dead or chose not to come for whatever reason, and Ted still feels sad about that. Or maybe his own mother missed his wedding and since he's always a bit girly, he can relate.

Penny Mosby isn't about to get married anytime soon, either in 2024 or 2030. She may never get married. I don't see why that should be the first thing Ted would think of if the mother truly were dying. He would be sad that she's going to miss out on many other parts of Penny's life before that. And either Ted or the mother could easily die before Penny ever gets married through any kind of circumstance.

Also if the mother told Ted not to live in his stories and she truly is dead in 2030, then the whole series is dishonouring her wish, since he's been telling stories for the past 9 years.

OH HELL NO.

:csad: :csad: :csad: :csad: :csad: :csad: :csad:

They better not do what I think (and alot of others have speculated) they're doing…

Geez. If it's true my friend called it way back in the fourth season. I really don't want to pay him twenty bucks for this.

IF, we are to go this route, Ted telling their story over the past 9 years is essentially his way of moving on.

Just as The Mother finally let go by having a conversation with her dead bf in the night sky, this is Ted's way to let go.

…I really don't like thinking about these types of scenerios. :csad:

If they're leaning so heavily upon the fan theory this far in advance, I've got to believe it's going to be more of a red herring than anything. Allow us to believe this is the reason he's telling the story, cue us up to get ready for a heart wrenching ending, and then the curveball.
