Exactly.^ That's who Thanos is. There's nothing to "improve" on and it sets him apart from other villains. Absolutely no reason to change it, unless you want to dilute the character.
So they're jettisoning the Death storyline? Or is that the balance he refers to?
Exactly. It's so simple on the surface but it's a really complex, poetic motivation. It's not just some girl, it's the literal embodiment of death in the entire universe. And it's inherent to his character. It's what makes him different from other villains like Ultron. I hope they don't end up going the a-typical, generic "I'm an evil guy wants to cleanse the universe and remake in my image" route, Been there, done that with Ultron & Ronan.
Shakespearen Thanos is who he is.

Death will be in it, the imbalance comments are in-line with the source.
At the end of the first Avengers film The Other said "Whoever challenges the Avengers courts Death." at which point Thanos stood up. Thanos courts Death. I think there will be some representation of Death in this film.

LololololololYes. Let's just say that you all are not going to like where the Soul Stone comes from.
I would have Death be more of a Goddess that Thanos worships instead of a character that doesn't speak that he always yells at for spurring his advances. Make Death more of a religious belief that Thanos has (where he thinks he's supposed to wipe out 50% of all life to balance things out, much the same way any religious fanatic does awful things because they think it serves their beliefs).
This way we can spend more time exploring Thanos philosophy and how he feels about the concept of Death and why he worships it, instead of eating up screen time having so many scenes of him trying to get a woman to respond to him (I think that works in comics but in a movie would drag on too long and be annoying after awhile).
And no, don't make Hela death. The Death that Thanos worships should be more universal and not tied to a specific Myth. Don't make Thanos a Thor villain.
Precisely. And anyone who doesn't get this doesn't get the character. You strip that element away and it immediately waters him down. People love to compare Thanos to Darkseid but as a character he's always had more nuance due to his union with Death. There are so many complexities with his character because of that relationship: for one, as harryoscop said, it makes him much more than a standard villain and brings a sensible reality to his actions; and number two, it shows exactly how deranged, detached and mentally ill the character is that of all of the women he could court, he chooses the personification of Death.
Removing all of this would be literally neutering Thanos as a character.
