So they're jettisoning the Death storyline? Or is that the balance he refers to?

My guess is if Death herself isn't involved, Hela will serve as the replacement there.

I hope to god they don't manage to screw Thanks up. Already the mission of death points to them simplifying things.

So Thanos is doing all this, just to impress a girl? I think the MCU can do better than that and improve on the comics story line. I am not expecting any love story.

^ That's who Thanos is. There's nothing to "improve" on and it sets him apart from other villains. Absolutely no reason to change it, unless you want to dilute the character.

Exactly. It's so simple on the surface but it's a really complex, poetic motivation. It's not just some girl, it's the literal embodiment of death in the entire universe. And it's inherent to his character. It's what makes him different from other villains like Ultron. I hope they don't end up going the a-typical, generic "I'm an evil guy wants to cleanse the universe and remake in my image" route, Been there, done that with Ultron & Ronan.

Shakespearen Thanos is who he is.

It better be more than Thanos wanting to change reality for the sake of it. No need to make him into a generic villain.

Death specifically wants him to kill off 50% of the population to restore balance between life and death in the comic so it's pretty in line with the source. They just haven't mentioned Death herself, as of yet.

Was done with Malekith too.

Right. But Thanos isn't JUST about getting the girl. Although, the Infinity Gauntlet storyline is. After that, Starlin writes a very existentially deep character. He's very philosophical, nihhilistic and just "ponders." The more we get into that side of his character, the more we realize how meaningless life is to Thanos and how he's not inherently evil.

This is the progression I hope we see from Infinity War 1-2.
I know the Avengers are the main characters but Thanos can really become one of the more interesting characters of the MCU. If the audience doesn't know how they feel about him as a soul, then Marvel did him right.

No matter how saddistic or nihilistic his actions are, even when the longing for love isnt involved, you STILL feel for him.

I think they may do it one better and have Death not even be an actual entity but somewhat of a hallucination of his. He is the Mad Titan after all.

Death will be in it, the imbalance comments are in-line with the source.

I don't actually mind a change in his motivations as long as they're solid.

I agree though just wanting a rebalance for rebalance sake is weak and akin to the likes of Ultrons motivation anyway, and that Thanos's motivation is pretty unique. I'm hoping we get a detailed back story and not 5 minutes like some of the other villains which is usually why they're weak IMO they don't get enough screen time. I get it for origin movies where they focus on the hero, but it should be more balanced in the sequels.

Im hoping IW is mostly build up of his character.

Exactly . I really hope this isn't a case of them wanting to exclude Death as they feel it will scare kids.

I'm thinking that Thanos's quest to re-balance the universe will involve knocking earth down a peg or seven. This goes back to the comics and the original Kree-Skrull conflict - the earth is becoming a breeding ground for beings of incredible power and needs to be dealt with before it becomes a threat to the rest of the universe. Think of Thanos as an alien Neo-Con (Oh how I miss them!) looking to take out the WMDs before they are launched. This fits in with the "higher form of war" warning provided by Thor in the Avengers film.

So while Thanos may threaten earth, his ultimate goal will be to eliminate its champions.

At the end of the first Avengers film The Other said "Whoever challenges the Avengers courts Death." at which point Thanos stood up. Thanos courts Death. I think there will be some representation of Death in this film.

I would have Death be more of a Goddess that Thanos worships instead of a character that doesn't speak that he always yells at for spurring his advances. Make Death more of a religious belief that Thanos has (where he thinks he's supposed to wipe out 50% of all life to balance things out, much the same way any religious fanatic does awful things because they think it serves their beliefs).

This way we can spend more time exploring Thanos philosophy and how he feels about the concept of Death and why he worships it, instead of eating up screen time having so many scenes of him trying to get a woman to respond to him (I think that works in comics but in a movie would drag on too long and be annoying after awhile).

And no, don't make Hela death. The Death that Thanos worships should be more universal and not tied to a specific Myth. Don't make Thanos a Thor villain.

Precisely. And anyone who doesn't get this doesn't get the character. You strip that element away and it immediately waters him down. People love to compare Thanos to Darkseid but as a character he's always had more nuance due to his union with Death. There are so many complexities with his character because of that relationship: for one, as harryoscop said, it makes him much more than a standard villain and brings a sensible reality to his actions; and number two, it shows exactly how deranged, detached and mentally ill the character is that of all of the women he could court, he chooses the personification of Death.

Removing all of this would be literally neutering Thanos as a character.

Despite some people thinking otherwise, Feige has said Thanos is the main character in Infinity War..saying that it is different from what they've done in the past.

Some early guessing may be right..the first movie may actually revolve around Thanos' character

Yay! People who get the character

All well and good. Hopefully they can translate comic Thanos accurately to MCU Thanos.
They've shown very little to flesh him out so far. Fair enough, none were ' his' movies so here's to IW being able up do so.

Because right now, to the GA he's 'apparently' the most powerful guy who mostly sits around choosing ineffective and/or in subordinate allies...
