The Dark Knight Rises Ideas For Incorporating Characters Into the Nolanverse

Well for me, I'd love to see Riddler, CatWoman, Black Mask, Deadshot, and maybe a few other villians that could fit into Nolan's world; I still want Two-Face in, but with the rumors I'm not too sure. We'll see though. Anywho, right now I've mainly be figuring out how Riddler and Catwoman would fit into Nolan's universe. :brucebat:

Riddler Part I- Like many of the villians, has a taste for the theatrical and will do anything from stealing to rage anarchy and terrorism to mass murdering as many people to spread his message; in this case, riddles. With me, I've been trying to find a way that Riddler doesn't come off anything like the Joker, but yet kinda represents this revolution in standing up in Gotham as Ledger's Joker would; basically kinda takin' the Freak side up a notch. To me, I'd figure Nigma to be this highly intellegent and advanced person who's very swav, very much a smart ass, mainly full of himself (almost all the selfish traits you'd find with Hugh Lauire in House M.D.) and has taste for riddles; and ya know, what better but to have him suffer from a severe OCD to top his personality and make all the previous stated info fit in place. But anywho, I mainly base him off the Riddler from TAS, Long Halloween, the Hush series, and most importantly in my book David Tennant's version of Doctor Who; basically kinda keep him up to date and modern with computer and technology wit, weapons (bombs preferably), and most likely hijacking new stations/computers/or anything that runs on batteries for that matter. Probably one of the more important things would be for him to do, in Nolan's world at least, would be all in how the execution and direction of how he sets up his riddles in a way to make everything suspenseful, menacing, and basically like the Joker, will do anything to watch the world burn to give the world an enigma.

I'll continue the rest later if I can think up more though. :word:

Riddler, but Zodiac-style.

I could really see Riddler be this cruel villain, leaving riddles behind, but also torturing the people he kidnaps just the fun of it. And who even knows the things he could do when he finds out Batman's identity, which should be a must if he is in a movie.

Addressing the inclusion of the Penguin, Catwoman, and the Riddler:

The Penguin
Of the various interpretations of the Penguin that we've seen over the years in either comics, cartoons, TV, or movies, my favorite happens to be the 'Burton Penguin'. A lot of people have been saying that you'd have to realize the Penguin in a more traditional fashion in order to make the character fit into the 'Nolan-verse', but I disagree; the 'Burton Penguin' would fit the Nolan-verse just as well, although some of the more over-the-top aspects of the character would need to be jettisoned, and there would need to be a real-world explanation provided to cover his physical deformities.

The Riddler
In terms of the Riddler, I'm really not getting why people think the character needs to be portrayed as some type of serial killer in order to fit into the Nolan-verse. If there's any one character who is tailor-made to fit into the more realistic universe that Nolan and Co. have created, it is the Riddler, since he's basically a riddle-obsessed introvert who went a little bit crazy and turned to a life of crime. Even if you wanted to go with a variation on the Jim Carrey version of the character, he'd still fit the Nolan-verse perfectly.

Catwoman
Catwoman is another character who can be portrayed very traditionally and still fit into the Nolan-verse, since she's essentially the female antithesis of Batman (a wealthy socialite who turned to crime and adopted an outlandish alter-ego in the process).

I was actually thinking about posting a thread just like this.

I have tons of ideas, but I'll perhaps post them when I gather them more efficiently.

However, I would like to post one, at the moment:

Mr. Freeze

I would keep the idea of Victor being a scientist who has cryogenically frozen his dying wife in order to sustain the possibility of her survival while Victor develops a cure. Now here's where I'd make the changes:

The Suit

I would probably have Victor feel guilty for the coming "death" of his loved one, feeling as if she's diseased because he couldn't protect her, and that if she dies, the blood will be on his hands (I know, sounds weird, but people think like that with the losses of loved ones). As part of this, he develops an armored suit used as both protection against foes and as punishment for himself- as it constantly keeps Fries very cold- for what happened to his wife, and as a constant reminder of his mission.

The Gun

The best I can really think of, is that Victor developes a weapon that can fire a very low-temperature, liquid ice. As I'm not scientifically inclined, I can't knowingly think of a good adaptation for Freeze's gun.

Catwoman-Orphaned since childhood, Selina Kyle spent almost all her life in the streets of Gotham's Narrows, she got trained by an ex-champion, called Ted Grant, she became an expert in fighting when she got only twenty, but when her trainer died, she got alone and found herself in the streets again, where she met Holly, a young prostitute who became her best friend. Both became very close, but Holly got killed once she heard a conversasion between his most frecuent client (Carmine Falcone) and Salvatore Maroni. When this happened, Selina returned to get revenge, by becoming Carmine's personal headache (not knowing he's actually her biological father) and stealing from his house and killing one of his bodyguards one night (thinking it was actually Falcone), when she killed him, she felt so bad that she swore never killing anyone again, but she actually liked stealing from other people, so she took an alias and a costume, so she started to be from that momment, The Catwoman, the most dangerous cat burglar from Gotham City narrows.

This is just a draft, I am actually working on a Catwoman comic book with batboy99, but this is about the best Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer, and we also have Holly in it...

That origin could fit into Nolanverse really well and at the same time the portrayal of the character is faithful to the comic books.

The Riddler- I think he would be cool as a Zodiac Killer type character.

The Penguin- This isn't a new idea. In the Batman Returns he just a monster basically. I think he would be better if he was a mob boss. He doesn't go by Penguin but that's what his rivals call him and what not.

Mr. Freeze- More of a mad scientist than anything.

Poison Ivy- Could be a crazy idealist who poisons those who pollute the world.

They could handle Ivy like in the BTAS episode "Pretty Poison", but maybe with a little more of a Black Widow.

I really think that Freeze is the only villain who can "up the ante" from the Joker. His backstory and his origin (if done right :o) would make him a very powerful character on screen. Riddler and Penguin are too dull, IMO, and are lacking that factor.

Seriously, now thinking about it I don't like the idea of Riddler as a mass-murdering serial killer like "Seven" or "Zodiac." Him as a Simon Greuber or "Die Hard 4" kind of villain seems more likely and seems to fit him better.

I agree. if Riddler is a homicidal maniac, it will be like a TDK Joker clone.

MR. Freeze

-Born an albino
-albinos can stay in extreme sunlight so he could be a night time guy
- he could build a suit that shield s him from the sunslight
-he could use liquid nitrogen or dry ice
-motive revenge on a world that has neglected him
- target scientists that killed couldn't cure his wife

THE PENGUIN.

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot's parent's where a couple of millionares. Oswald's father was the owner of a big company and his mother, his best saleswoman. Oswald had a babysitter, that introduced him to birds. Oswald loved learning about birds with his nanny. One day, Oswald's father died of pneumonia. The family lost everything and his mother eventually died on the street, murdered by Sal Maroni, when working as a hooker. Oswald begun to work as henchman and, eventually, travelled to Russia, where he became a arms dealer know as ''penguin'' because of his umbrella, that his mother insited him to use, now convertend in a hiddem blade. After gaining a fortune in negociations, Oswald comes back to Gotham to become the new crime boss and revenge his parents by their fate. To control his negociations, Oswald buys the Iceberg Louge and focuses his revenge on the mob bosses and the high society, commiting murders with birds so everyone knows they're being punished by... The penguim.

MAN-BAT

Man-Bat could be incredible, playing into Bruce Wayne's deepest fear. Forget what Scarecrow did to him in Batman Begins, watching Batman go up against a Bat creature over the rooftops of Gotham would be amazing!

The only problem is seeing a scientist with an experiment gone wrong is just a tired and played out origin story.

I don't know if this has been thought of but one thing that a real Batman would have to deal with is maniacs out there who would become obsessed with him and want to be like him. And I was thinking what if an obsessed fanatic, maybe some other multi-millionaire who decides to use his millions to become a new kind of Batman, takes a scientist hostage forcing him to make him into a half man/half bat creature. It would be an experiment intentionally done, not an experiment gone wrong.

He loses his mind however, and becomes a raging bat creature that Batman has to stop despite being horrified of it.

Could be one incredibly awesome 3rd movie and just plain vicious!
Atleast it wouldn't be just another Batman movie with the same old villains.

I hate that this **** has to be interpreted for Nolans sake. Just use the comic as is.

If Nolan was to include a lead female villain...I think Harley Quin would be perfect instead of being a shrink she should be a follower of the Joker, worshipping him and believing in his ways...however TDK ends w/the Joker character she can pick up where he left off...

the villians should be

Two-face main lead ft/ Tony Zuco
Harley Quin female lead
Crime boss Rupert Thorne ft/ Selina Kyle(as his secretary/lover and later dawns her Catwoman costume asa theif and assasin, but Ms. Kyle has her own agenda kill off Thorne and take his $ and power)

all 3 factions are fighting for control of Gotham streets

Just make Two-Face not dead and have him come back and do stuff a la Dark Victory.

I would differentiate Riddler from Joker as much as possible. Whereas the Joker's voice is very creepy, very soft, the Riddler's voice should be louder and more arrogant sounding. Whereas Joker is often hunched over and movies jerkily, Riddler should stand tall and move swiftly. In my opinion Riddler should be all about control, maintaining control over whatever he is doing. Whereas the Joker was all about causing chaos, the Riddler should be all about him maintaining complete control.
Since TDK ends with Batman sort of on the run, I would use Edward Nygma as a guy who makes a pact with the cops and the people in power in gotham in order to catch the Batman. He fashions himself as the Riddler in order to make it seem like a new costumed psychopath is threatening Gotham. He attempts to lure Batman in. However this ruse becomes more of an obsession for Nygma and he breaks away from the police and his affiliations to pursue a more personal game with Batman.

With Catwoman, all you would need to do is present her as Frank Miller wrote her in Year One. Rinse, repeat.

Let the mastermind villain hire some muscle. Mercs from around the world. The best of the best.

1) Bane
Big Brazillian guy, talented merc and bounty hunter, raised on south american geurilla warfare, a little accent and utterly badass. Wears standard Paramilitary uniform type stuff. Face is more Ghost Recon than spandex mask. For the film's climax, let him take some drugged adrenaline he acquires for a pumped up fight against the Bat. He doesn't have to carry the show or be a huge part, but having him try to doublecross the mastermind in the end would be a nice touch... especially if he's slick and successful.

2) Deadshot
Pretty easy. A Gentleman sniper, English sort, very much Gotham Knight, give him fine clothing (in his comic costume colors) accented by slick briefcases with gloriously disturbing looking customized weapons. Add to this a infrared/telescopic monocular, and you have deadshot, but realistic and easily used for film.

3) Lady Shiva
Michelle Yeoh, please. Unrelenting, unforgiving, unremoseful and utterly untouchable in hand to hand combat. Former League of Shadows. Keep her pretty simple in her quest for a combatant worthy, but stay away from that stupid 'giving them a chance and getting killed for it' trope.

4) Ventriloquist
This would be the most fun to update. Instead of trying to emulate the cartoon, let Ventriloquist be a skilled hitman, one that seems entirely mute. Couple this with his 'Scarface' doll which actually does do the talking, and can actually be pretty comical, and you've got a pretty interesting character, that doesn't demand a lot of screen time and can have a really REALLY cool death scene.

Get these four together and you've got four really cool fight scenes, with four classic batman villains, without having to delve too deep into their psyches or go out of your way to explain something inhuman because everything they do is completely normal.

I've heard and liked something similar to this idea before, Dan (welcome to the board, btw). I've always considered the Riddler to be one of the most interesting of Batman's rogue's gallery. People somehow think he's too much like the Joker (theatricality, perhaps?), but I completely disagree. Having the Riddler would herald totally different tones, moods and themes for the 3rd film.

Nolan already said he doesn't like penguin. I know it would be difficult but if the riddler is in it I trully think Hush should play a part.
