i think a even more dissilusioned joker who has broken apart even more from his stay in arkham could be good.
its not message that type of riddler would be sending, he would be taunting the law just like real life serial killers do. well zodiac for one and btk for two but that idiot got caught. serial killers dont have a grand scheme of things, they kill cause they want to and then try to taunt the law because they think they can outsmart the justice system. ted bundy was like this too.Ledger Joker? Serial killer? Predictable and boring. Why do you want to repeat the formula. It's better if he is a federal agent who gets obssesed with catching the Batman and goes rogue on it, setting complicated traps that are more dangerous each time, and leaving clues as a fake criminal called the Riddler to make him fall on them. A man obssesed about the power of the mind and who maybe has repeated talks with Johnatan Crane to discuss ideas about how to get inside the mind of the Bat and lure him into a trap.
But not a serial killer just for the sake of it?
Why? What would be his message?
It's not about the killings, it's about sending a message. Every single villain Nolan has presented us with had an idea behind him, even Scarecrow and Falcone. Your Riddler doesn't seem to have any.
You want a compelling villain, and with Riddler is very easy to make him look pathetic, not compelling.
Bats and Gordon going to Joker for advice and psychological insight b
The Jokers too clever for anyone who comes near him, he'll lie and cause misery without even having to leave his cell. This is the way I'd want him treated in BatmanIII. Maybe they think he knows something and Gordon contacts Batman because apparantly Joker has already made one doctor leave the job already and another slash her wrists. So Batman has to break into Arkham without being noticed, or be snuck in as patient, and then leave by assaulting several guards. The implication will be obvious. That's the benefit of visiting the Joker in Arkham for me

There are soooo many things wrong with that idea that I don't even know where to start.I think the best way to take the riddler is to make him into that Wayne Enterprises employee who discovered Batmans identity in DK, I found that subplot a little bit unnecessary and random but if the next movie took the riddler in this direction i think it'd kind've retroactively validate it... They even had that little look after Wayne crashed his car into him and Gordon.. That weird sorta "This aint over" look... This tells me that the best way to do Riddler is basically to make him a very personal villain to Bales Batman, A villain who knows his secret identity, who teases him (and the cops) with riddles about it left at crime scenes etc. ...

^ yeah it make more sense than going to the Joker for advice. that was always a wtf idea to me

Rise of the freaks - Joker directly leading to this. Its not above and beyond to see him being used by the authorities in some way as insight into the criminally insane. In exchange maybe theyll give him a purple straight jacket hehehe
Also, am i alone here in thinking that as great as Ledger was (and he WAS truly great), that the joker could quite easily be recast...
Ledger was not the only young and talented actor waiting to live up to his potential...
I read an interview with Gary Oldman a few weeks ago and he agrees with me...

I'd rather just not have the Riddler if they're going to turn him into something he's not. Even in those rare instances he has tried to kill someone, it's been a person who's directly wronged him or Batman himself. The Riddler, at his core, is not about killing people. To make him into a serial killer would cheapen him immensely. It almost sounds like you want him to be a cross between Ledger's Joker and the guy from Saw. That's not Riddler and never has been.I think that Riddler needs to be played like a cross between the Ledger Joker and the Zodiac Killer. He needs to be a psycho, a serial killer, who uses riddles in his crimes as his signature. He needs to be a different breed of such, though. He wants to taunt people and, especially, Batman. He wants to show his own superiority without being swept up in it. He has to be more grunge and real, like the Ledger Joker. His killings have to be more inspired, more intelligent. Traps laid, rather than knives and guns. I also think it would be crucial for Riddler to escape in the end, rather than be killed or captured. Perhaps faked death, that is revealed as such. He has to be Batmans intellectual equal, rather than a wannabe like he's usually portrayed.
Really? That's funny, because lots of people couldn't see Ledger as a Joker that wasn't permawhite, or the Scarecrow as only doning mask. I know the same thing can be said to every villain but, if someone can do Freeze justice, those are the Nolans.
Except that I was one of the ones that loved the idea of TDK having a joker that wasn't permawhite.
My idea is Black Mask as the main villain for the third film (or at least as a secondary villain). I'm writing up a plot summary of what I would do for a third Batman film soon and i'll see what you guys think of it.
If anything, I would exaggerate the Riddler in the other direction to make him unique. Not grungy at all. I would make him an Incredibly OCD, passive-aggressive, manic-depressive fellow. he repeats words and phrases dozens of times, he is a complete germ-a-phobe, and despite the fact he is probably one of the most intelligent people on the planet and he knows this, he has a very odd love-hate relationship with himself and is near suicidal. I would make him someone who almost WANTS to be caught and killed by Batman as he sees it as very worthy way to go and thats why he leaves the riddles.
There's no chance whatsoever Christopher Nolan would ever do it but if, somehow circumstances changed and they Poison Ivy as the next villain are we all agreed that Alicia Witt's the only actress for the role?

No, she's not. There is not ONLY ONE actor/actress for one character (Ledger taught us that) and just because someone is a sexy redhead celeb doesnt make her apt for being Poison Ivy. Think outside the box (and start that by acknowledging that hair Can Be Dyed).
Why does Riddler have to be a serial killer. Couldn't he just be an a-hole who's so cocky and egotistical that he figures no one is smart enough to stop him so he leaves riddles behind to mock Gordon and the police?
Or is that too cliche for Nolan's batverse?
Not at all. Not cliché at all. You want a spin for it? (the following idea is not mineMake him a Federal Agent (a cocky, a-hole federal agent) who is given the task of catching the Batman and gets obsessed about it. He sets traps for him that are too dangerous, and keeps doing it until he becomes rogue and still tries to catch the Batman, but with most of the law supporting him, which should put some real pressure on Batman. Gordon should do everything to hinder his success, of course.
For me, is the best Riddler idea I've read. Riddler is no serial killer. He is intellectually obsessed with Batman, nothing more.
Not too cliché for Nolan. In fact, he can handle obsession pretty well al his previous movies deal with it (Following, Memento, The Prestige).

Well, you were NOT kidding when you said "exaggerate".
That would be another travesty to the character. Riddler is all about arrogance and intellectual prepotency, not about lack of self-esteem.
Besides, what would a villain like that ADD to the Batman character and its world? You want him to be an obstacle for the batman, because at the end of the day these movies are about Batman... the villains are not the main characters. Nolan is not Burton, thank God.
Poor idea, forced upon the viewer. What's up with you, people?! LEDGER WAS THE JOKER. At least THAT PARTICULAR Joker. You CAN'T RECAST IT... IT'S WRONG.
Stop living in the past and omce up with some good ides to make other villains justice. They deserve it.
