The Dark Knight Rises Ideas For Incorporating Characters Into the Nolanverse

Actually, I'd think it'd be more realistic (and a hell of a lot scarier and cooler) if he actually put a real human skull, painted black over his head. I would actually rather have a Black Mask that CAN take his mask off, but he just never wants to. He likes being Black Mask too much.... much more than he likes being Roman Sionis. He's dedicated to his alternate persona.

More realistic?

You realise it's impossible to "wear" a human skull right?

I can see firefly definitely working in Nolan's verse. Arsonist are some of the worst types of criminals....just make him a middle-aged pyromaniac and take out the corny costume, give him normal clothes but make him look sinister...perhaps a coat and a cap to make him seem a bit more mysterious

Riddler: Edward Nashton suffered childhood abuse at the hands of his father and his classmates. He was a brilliant child, and enjoyed solving puzzles. One day, he plays a puzzle game against his father. He wins easily, but his father believes he cheated. His father punishes him harshly for this. His classmates mock and tease him constantly for his bookish nature. This trauma causes him to develop Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which manifests itself in the form of using riddles and puzzles to prove his intelligence. Years later, he works as a code-breaker for the National Security Agency. He breaks U.S. government codes in his spare time, purely for personal enjoyment. When this habit is discovered, he is fired. His firing causes him to go over the edge, and he begins to commit acts of terrorism. He sends riddles to the police, with the answers informing them of the targets of his bombings. After witnessing Batman preventing a bombing, he begins to dress in more eccentric fashion, wearing a pale green suit and carrying a green cane. He begins posting his riddles on the internet to challenge Batman specifically, in a quest to prove he is smarter. He also becomes obsessed with attempting to deduce Batman's identity. He eventually realizes Batman is Bruce Wayne, but promises not to reveal it, because everyone else must figure it out for themselves. Played by Edward Norton.

Alternatively: Edward Nashton was abused as a child, ect. He becomes a professor of mathematics at Gotham State University, but is fired for his abusive behavior toward faculty members and students who challenge his intelligence. He then begins targeting those who wronged him, sending riddles of their identities to police and sending them bombs through the mail. Inspired by Ted Kacynski, the Unambomber.

Catwoman: Selina Kyle is a cat-loving professional thief and confidence woman. She poses as a dominatrix as part of a con of a member of the Gotham mob, which is where she acquires her affinity for whips. Her suit is a skin-tight black suit with a black mask. She uses high tech gadgets to assist her in her thefts. Selina Kyle poses as a spoiled socialite to cover her crimes, claiming to have inherited money from her parents. She initially attempts to con Bruce Wayne, but ends up having feelings for him. Played by Angelina Jolie.

Poison Ivy: Pamela Isley, a brilliant botanist, is also a radical environmentalist who resorts to eco-terrorism to promote her agenda. She uses her knowledge of biochemistry to create organic poisons, and assassinates several prominent polluters. Bruce Wayne becomes a target, due to her dissatisfaction with Wayne Enterprise's environmental standards. She eventually develops a plot to purify the earth by eliminating almost all human life. She attempts to unleash a lethal organic virus she develops.

Mad Hatter: Jervis Tetch, a computer programmer, lives a lonely adult life after a childhood of abuse at the hands of his father. As a child, he preferred to read rather than spend time with other children. His favorite book was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. His father thought his son's obsession was pathetic, and beat him. As an adult, he finds love with his Secretary, Alice. When she rejects his advances, he snaps and kills her. Overcome by grief, he seeks to recapture his childhood by escaping into the reality of his favorite book. To this end, he begins kidnapping young girls named Alice and playing out his fantasies with them. Eventually, the girls upset him and he murders them. He may be a pedophile, this is never specifically addressed on screen (too dark for a movie to be seen by children). Batman is disturbed by his violation of innocent children, reflecting on his own childhood trauma. The Mad Hatter, as the press dubs him, eventually takes his game to a larger level, as he kidnaps several prominent members of Gotham to play a full version. He plans to broadcast the game over the internet, on an encrypted site (His computer expertise put to good use). Batman manages to intervene in time to stop the killings, and captures Tetch.

Firefly: An orphan whose parents died in a fire he accidentally set while playing with matches as a child. He becomes a pryo-maniac as an adult, and develops a flame-proof suit of armor. He walks around with a flame thrower connected to a tank of gasoline on his back. His body is covered in burns.

Mr. Freeze: Same origin as animated series. Initially commits crimes to raise money for research on his wife. Batman attempts to stop him, and traces him to his hideout. Batman confronts him, and offers to help him cure his wife. Doctor Fries refuses his help, and attacks him. An accident breaks his wife's tank, spilling the freezing liquid all over him. Batman leaves him for dead. Fries uses a gun which squirts liquid nitrogen, and wears the traditional metal suit to keep his body temperature low (less flashy than the B&R version, more like animated series. Played by Patrick Stewart.

Bane: Born and raised in a South American prison. Learns to fight to survive. Experimented on with a new steroid by the prison physician. The steroid makes him powerful and intelligent, but also emotionally unstable and easily provoked. Once he grows strong enough, he breaks out of the prison to Gotham City, to confront the Batman that he has been told of in prison. He does not pump Venom into his veins for in instant strength boost, but rather uses it as he would a real steroid. He never removes his mask. Played by a wrestler/bodybuilder, voiced by Benicio Del Toro.

I have to say, I absolutely love your idea for The Mad Hatter!!!

I think a toned down original version of Killer Croc would be decent, and pretty damn scary visually. Just like the original version, have him as a normal, strongly built man with a skin disease (Epidermolytic hyperkeratosis) that gives the impression of scales an such, but not over his whole body. I think the look of that would be quite frightening, and it seems like Nolan is very interested in the fear aspect of all his villains so far, even Batman himself. As far as the story and his motivations, I'll leave that up to the professionals, but trust me, Killer Croc done realistically would scare the hell out of people

Maybe not a full human skull but one pieced together. and if you would like to get really literal how about skin or actually wearing someone else's face..painted black...this i think would make for a much more feared villain by the general public of gotham. and movie goers.

Yeah, but that's not The Black Mask. The mask and the name of his gang/organisation - the False Face Society - works on different levels for the character. Substituting that for a something more inspired by Ed Gein is unecessary.

Its a forum. Someone says something and it snowballs.

Plus he serves a lot of purposes:

1) He represents the mob mentality in Gotham
2) He represents escalation with his mask
3) Hes a character that hasnt been used yet and Goyer and Nolan bros have seem to implied they want different characters that havent been used yet.
4) Hes as realistic as Joker. Just a guy with a mask/facepaint

Wasn't he also rich like bruce, inherited his parents millions, then lost it all? Also, didn't Nolan's brother write up something on him?

I also agree with you on the "no skull" look. Two face already took that appearance.

BUT...is he as interesting or well known as the riddler, catwoman or Bane? Not really. Gotta think of the general movie goer.

1) He represents the mob mentality in Gotham

Is that really what the third movie should feature? Or should it feature freaks outright taking over from the mobsters?

2) He represents escalation with his mask

So does almost any character that has anything to do with escalation, which at this point, is almost any new supervillain.

3) Hes a character that hasnt been used yet and Goyer and Nolan bros have seem to implied they want different characters that havent been used yet.

Eh...

4) Hes as realistic as Joker. Just a guy with a mask/facepaint

Is that neccessarily a good thing?

I notice that nowhere in there does anyone mention "He's boring". Oh, wait...Crimson did.

His gang is somewhat interesting as a concept. Him, not so much. For years, he was regarded as a joke. Actually, isn't he still sort of regarded as a joke, just a really pity, torturing one?

i would like to see Bane, maybe the plot could loosly follow the Knightfall arc. Bane could spring all the inmates from Blackgate and Arkham to test Batman and throw Gotham into chaos. There could also be a war between the traditional gangsters and all the freaks that escaped from Arkham led by Scarecrow or Joker.

heah that croc idea from like page 2 or 3, ireally liked so i'm working on some concept art based on the idea. iaint very good but soon as i can get it done an on the internet i put it in here

Introducing Mr. Freeze in a new film may bring back bad memories.

i think freeze could be done very very well, if handled by the same nolan who brought us the joker

The mob should always have a presence in Gotham.

Yes, but he covers all these other points as well. Its not pick which characteristic is best, its a whole package deal.

its a valid reason.

not to me really, I dont pray at the Church of Nolan but theres no denying people around here are obsessed with reality probably more than Nolan is.

Again most of these people are obsessed with reality and reinterpreting more than probably Nolan is so yeah going most characters have gotten their chance in the casting/reinterpretation threads

I have two doubts about The Riddler:

1. Could he be an imposing enough villain for Batman, considering his games are almost completely mental instead of physical?

2. Could Nolan make his cat-and-mouse games with Batman seem fresh and not a retread of what The Joker did in The Dark Knight. Things like sending the police a card with DNA on it to tell them who he's targeting next, etc. sound like the kinds of crimes we could have imagined The Riddler committing in the Nolanverse.

I also have my doubts about Nolan doing Black Mask...another sadistic lunatic who amasses his own gang and takes over Gotham's criminal underworld from the traditional mob bosses? Unless Nolan found a fresh way of doing it, he would seem like a second-rate Joker wannabe (as he tends to in the comics, frankly, even when he was kinda cool in War Games he was still reminiscient of The Joker, especially the brutal TDK Joker).

I stick to the idea of clayface being a serial killer that constantly alter his appearance through plastic surgery.

If harley is used she needs to have more clean cut lips, pigtails(black), dark red lipstick, this
red_and_black_detail.gif

and a really pointy knife.

killer croc has skin diseases and whatnot(u can think of something better).

Bane a super steroid(many steroids and has an injection unit that has pain killer and other drugs that distance him from reality and have him feel no pain) user who body is at the peak of human conditioning, he is a very trained mercenary, he learned much from prison

Manbat is a man obsessed with bats who starts to turn his body into a bat via hair gainer, nose reconstruction, tattooing, bone reconstruction(he is a doctor), and artificial wings that really do not work(don't like it much)

Catwoman is an amazing acrobat and gymnast who has professional training with a whip and knife (she studies krav maga, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, and mixed martial arts). She is an adrenaline junkie and has no regard for her own life, she seems to not die(mostly luck).

Riddler a man who has no goal but to make you puzzled. He wears a mask covering most of his face. He prefers to use a cane with knife hidden inside. He does not have much training and relies in whit and grunts to accomplish his goals.

poison ivy is a terrorist who only cares about plants(and sex maybe idk). Anyone who she feels is harming mother nature deserves to die.

Deadshot a former marine sniper turned merc. who wants to be killed often wearing bright clothing.

Ventriloquist and Scarface. Scarface is the mafia and ventriloquist is the guy pulling the strings. he is smart, he openly shows his face , but GCPD can't link him to anything. He messages the mafia through video tapes, but he uses a puppet to communicate.

Black mask A drug running business man who is cutting in to the falcone families drug trade. They send a hit on him, but he brutally murders the guy. When he is doing business he uses a black mask painted like a skull, under it is ballistic protection along with a filter for breathing and eye glasses for night vision and heat vision. This was a custom piece he bought off the black market. He prefers the use of a stiletto knife, bowie knife, and a .44 magnum revolver. He is a very smart business man who has a company that is increasingly taking wayne ent. business. More preferring to blow them away or just get the job done.

Hush. A child hood friend with extreme hate for wayne he treated a Dr. Crane for medical purposes, Dr. Crane talked about a man named Riddle. He searched later met up with this man after he was brought in by batman. They schemed and Riddler told him that batman=bruce wayne.

I like these five characters, and if we have seen anything its that nolan can handle and ensemble. I have a mental image in my head now, of Hush as the main villain, because I would like to see him used on film, maybe have it be someone bruce befriended at princeton, I see him teaming hiring the riddler to determine Batman's identity, similar to the way falcone hired him, in the long halloween, Riddler becomes obsessed with stopping the batman, I could see him hiring the ventriloquist to relay messages to his muscle, the men he has on the street actually going after the batman, enter Bane and Clayface, I like the idea of plastic surgery, as a way of constantly changing his identity. The only problem with that is the healing time it takes between surgeries. The Manbat I like for another reason, I see him being the next stage of the copycats from the dark knight, seeing that they can not handle this taking on threats of the caliber of the joker, they stop, I could see langstrom as a scientist who studies bats, because he wants to be stronger and help the city similar to batman, or maybe even bring him to justice himself for the crimes he is responsible for. I could see him taking a sample of blood from bane found on the street and extracting the steroid out of it to create his bat serum.

Right, this is how I see it.

We start off with The Penguin. Now that all the previous mob bosses are out of the picture (Maroni, Gambol, the russian, Lau etc) he is working his way up the food chain of other potential mob bosses as an arms dealer (next time, I suggest you buy American). Now Lau's associates out in Hong Kong dont like this and are fighting him for a position on the market to supply weapons to other mob bosses. Since Lau is now dead, they are figuring out a way to carry on his business by any means possible.

The Penguin and the chinese are fighting it out, so much so that it comes to possible assassination and a war between them. The Penguin realises he is at risk of being killed by the chinese for stealing their business and turns to a man that he has been supplying arms to since trading began, he is fully aware of this mans reputation as he is considered a Deadshot with any weapon. The Penguin offers to supply him with any weapons necessary and a share of any profits he makes as a result of saving his life.

While this is all happening, Bruce Wayne is still hiding away from being Batman as much as possible. He still mourns the death of Rachel and tries to fit in with others by attending parties on behalf of Wayne Enterprises. At one of his parties to celebrate a new business venture for Wayne Enterprises to help reduce gun crime in Gotham by buying out two of the worlds major gun manafacturers (if he can't save the city as Batman, he will do his best as Bruce Wayne) he stumbles upon a domestic dispute between a young lady and her older husband. Now Bruce respects women greatly after what happened to Rachel and tries to break up the argument after the lady has been hit by her husband. The ladies husband leaves promptly after realising how his actions have effected the party. Bruce Wayne looks down to this young lady, she turns her head up to him. Bruce recognises this girl

BRUCE: "aren't you...?"
SELINA: "Selina Kyle? very observant Mister Wayne. I'm proud to be recognised by one of the wealthiest men of our time"
BRUCE: "Not as proud as I am to have such a talented gymnast attend this party."

Bruce helps the young lady up on to her feet and offers her a drink. A conversation between Bruce and Miss Kyle develops and Bruce is intrigued to find out why she is at the party. Miss Kyle expresses that her husband was here to find out how Wayne Enterprises will reduce gun crime as he has been trying to do so as head of the "Gun Crime Home Office" for many years without success. After Miss Kyle's husband got upset realising that Bruce has achieved what he never could thats when an argument broke out between him and his wife.

Going back to The Penguin trying to protect his own life with this man known as Deadshot, he realises that it's not just the chinese that are a threat to his business but also those at the "Gun Crime Home Office" and at Wayne enterprises so he sends Deadshot after Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle's husband to send a message to those that want to be rid of gun crime. Bruce Wayne has been doing his detective work despite hiding away from being Batman, and realises that Selina's husband is a potential target for the arms dealer for the mob aswell as himself.

After Bruce has pieced together information and realises that Deadshots movements are motivated by The Penguin he vows to protect Selina's husband as Batman (since being Bruce Wayne is potentially a bigger threat now) and keeps a watchful eye over him. The very night Deadshot decides to make his move to kill Selina's husband Batman decides to make his move to stop the assassination from going ahead. Batman pinpoints Deadshots location, fights him for his rifle and removes it from his grasp, upon doing so Deadshot pulls out one of his many throwing knives and throws it at Batman. Batman falls to the ground below and dodged the attack just enough to get the Knife stuck in his shoulder and not his face. Deadshot, now without a gun and having Batman momentarily incapacitated decides to move fast to finish the job with one of his knives. Deadshot calls for his pick up gets in to throwing range finishes the job and leaves. Batman, now on his feet leaves the scene being pursued by the police with the knife from his shoulder still in hand.

Selina Kyle now believes Batman may have played a part in killing her husband and decides to take on some detective work herself to understand Batmans motivations and figure out if it really was him that did it. Jim Gordon approaches Selina and expresses that she shouldn't get so caught up in believing Batman could have done this to her. Selina ignores him and contiues her research and with now nothing to lose looks to becoming a vigilante much like Batman is, but with her husband not believing in guns, she sticks by that and pursues her husbands killer without any long range weaponry.....

Obviously from here Selina looks to Wayne for help as she knows that he is just as much a target as her husband was and that's where their relationship develops.

I dont think I could write up much more, the rest could be left to your imagination.I like how each character in Nolans universe has such a real life motive and how everything is very much 'cause and effect' and was thinking how that could be portrayed with new villains and carry on from TDK. This is one way I see it, but however Nolan wishes to do it, i'm sure would be amazing.

I have two doubts about The Riddler:

1. Could he be an imposing enough villain for Batman, considering his games are almost completely mental instead of physical?

Riddler isn't a complete weakling in the comics.

They can update him into being deadly with his cane by using it like a bo-staff and improve his unarmed combat skill, as well.

True.

Riddler a man who has no goal but to make you puzzled. He wears a mask covering most of his face. He prefers to use a cane with knife hidden inside. He does not have much training and relies in whit and grunts to accomplish his goals.

Joker had no real goal in the comics, either. They still gave him one in TDK.

Riddler isn't impossible to update into a major threat in the Nolan verse.

Deadshot a former marine sniper turned merc. who wants to be killed often wearing bright clothing.

They don't have to give him bright clothing.

Maybe clayface could use prostetic(don't know how to spell that and don't wanna look it up) at first then over time slowly be getting plastic surgery(arm and leg lengthening and shortening)? What if he is constantly changing his name? He is a serial killer who constantly kills the people he imitates? He could be anyone. Anywhere. He was an actor, voice impersonator, and criminally insane. The riddler is the one who gives him orders and loves to puzzle GCPD and batman on who clayface really is.

I like the idea of deadshot being a hitman hired by the riddler to kill batman. He has no regard for his own life. He wears a black overcoat, swat style boots, a red tactical shirt with a hand stitched bullseye on the right side of his chest (he wears tactical pants also black), and he also wears a tactical mask that is silver plated.

Bane hardened ex con, now turned merc. gets hired by the falcone family to kill Batman, riddler, and all of his men. He uses a hybrid steroid. In the process his bones begin to get bigger, his muscles, and everything else. The process takes a while (days, weeks, months idk), but is worth it (the side effects are not known). He has a handy injector hooked up to his body that injects drugs that make him feel no pain while improving his ability to fight. He wears clothes that make him look smaller than he is and rarely goes out in public.

What do you think?
