I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

I wouldn't mind if this movie remained a one-off without any sequels at all.
I would accept that. It has its own story arc in the end: from vengeance to hope.

Pretty much how I feel as well.

I think the film works pretty well as a stand alone , Batman story .

Yeah, it ends with door open to further stories , but it also works as a self contained ,one off .

Batman 89 and Batman Begins are other films which could have, in theory, been one shot stories without sequels .

If The Batman ends up being a stand alone , I'd be satisfied in all honesty.

Maybe it's because I've seen umpteen Batman films, cartoons, since 1989, .

But the character has never really been gone since 89', and regardless of what happens with this version,
the character is going to return to the big screen eventually.

And I can wait . I always have .

Because of the rumors surrounding this film and the issues its had so far - I've made my peace with this idea.

Just in case.

Best to be pleasantly surprised than caught of guard by heartbreak. No hard feelings to Matt if this film never happens.

And they still got sequels, just like this one will. I refuse to give in to this defeatism.

I didn't claim there wouldn't be a sequel, and, to be clear , I'm not being defeatist.

My point, was that The Batman was such a good standalone story , and like Batman 89 and Batman Begins , and they didn't require sequels.

Yes, the other films got sequels.

What I was saying, was that if The Batman was the only story out of the Reeves-verse, Me, as a fan, would still be satisfied given how it works as a standalone story.

What you feel about what may or may not be the future of the franchise,
is perfectly fine.

But I was talking about how I would feel if there was only one Batman film in The Reeves-verse.
I wasn't claiming to speak for any other posters feelings and thoughts.

I have no idea, but my guess is it's because of Gunn's DCU.
Most likely, the heads at WB do not want two batman, or is it batmen, running around, and Matt doesn't want his batman to be part of the DCU, so there is conflict.

Again?

It's known by now that Matt Reeves has been dealing with personal issues.

Sure, maybe there's other drama BTS but I feel like people wilfully ignore the concrete reason we know for sure was the driving force behind the delay.

To be honest, I don't expect to hear anything until after the release of Superman. Regardless of what the news is with respect to the sequel I don't think they want it taking the attention away from the release of Superman.

To be honest, I don't expect the sequel...and I am ok with that. Move on to Brave and the bold. If Matt needs time, then so be it. It sounds like it is awful what he is going through.

I am very curious to see if the brave and the bold concept clicks with the general audience. Personally, I'm not a fan of the idea and I feel like the execution, if not done properly, could be like Batman & Robin all over again.

That said, even on that film, I definitely don't expect to hear anything until after superman as I'm sure Gunn is heavily involved in that.

That's what I suspect as well .

Regardless of what may happen with The Batman 2, it makes sense for them, at least publicly, to put the emphasis on the huge film coming out in a few months, as opposed to ,publicly commenting , about any Batman film , which ,at the soonest ,would likely have a 2027 release date.

While The Batman 2's production may be a triggering topic, in online fandom, there's really no need for Gunn and Safran to comment on it, when the focus should be on Superman.

Thought this was a very fair and well-articulated video essay The Batman. It captures some of my own ambivalence towards the movie, but also makes me appreciate how it fits into the greater cultural context a bit more too.

It does but okay.

It's common sense that DC doesn't wanna do two Batman worlds despite saying they're doing it? The last piece of info we got about these films is that they're making both. No reason to think otherwise rn.

Nothing suggests they don't want to do two Batman worlds.
I do think that this is ultimately a bad idea, though. The general audience is not that smart, when it comes to this stuff. You will still run into people who think Batman is Marvel or ask why Spider-Man can't be in a Superman film.

They don't have the bandwidth to grasp "Well, THIS is an Elseworlds Batman and THIS is a DCU Batman...."

It's such a simple concept to us, but to Joe Public? It's too complicated and a lot of them tune out.

I think they run the risk of cannibalizing their own audience.

Yep
