Independence Day 2?

Can someone explain how Judd Hirsch looks younger now than he did 20 years ago in the first one?

Is Pullman going to be rocking that awesome beard in this?

Also I confess I thought Judd Hirsch had passed away a few years back. Guess not!

You obviously haven't watched Numb3rs or Forever. Hirsch has been in both of those.

I don't really think he looks younger, but he certainly doesn't look any older.

If it matters, the actor who played Will Smith's step-son didn't return, probably for the same reasons.

I think he's not acting anymore and is a music producer now.

I was not expecting to be as excited as I am seeing those pictures of the cast and new vehicle. Ah, nostalgia.

Man, I can't wait. I think I'm going to watch the first one this week again. That speech is still chilling.

Not a bad cast all things considered. Well except for the noticeable absence of Mae Whitman (pointless recast imo) and big Willy (I wonder how they'll explain his character not being there).

^ They all do, I think. I like Pullman's big ass beard.

He also quit acting.

Whitman is at least doing her thing and is decently popular

Which is why it seems odd that she has been recast. It's not like she's faded into complete obscurity.

But maybe she's not the image they would like for Liam Thorsworth:

But as a member of the president's security detail, she would've worked if she weren't also meant to be a love interest. She would look quite like a normal working woman for that kind of governmental-type job.

Nobody really posted the tidbits in the thread, so here:

- The events of the original movie are called the “War of 1996”, and director Roland Emmerich that part of this movie will be about a post-war generation.

- The livestream event took place on a set that’s a moon base. We got a glimpse of a Human Hybrid Fighter Jet and a moon tug. This technology came from the aliens. “We can’t build alien technology,” says Emmerich, “but we can harvest it.”

- Emmerich originally didn’t want to return for a sequel, but after working on 2012, he was lured back by the prospect of what they could do with the technology.

- The movie takes place in 2016, and David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) is now the director of Earth Space Defense, which is in charge of protecting the Earth (the name is not misleading). Additionally, this group works across border as countries have united against a common threat.

- Dr. Okun (Brent Spiner) is alive and just as manic and excitable as he was before. He also has a new wig that’s even longer.

- Sela Ward plays President Lanford. She’s more aggressive than President Whitmore (Bill Pullman, who didn’t specify how his character factors into the sequel). She’s more willing to use force, and Earth has been preparing for an invasion for 20 years. “There’s a very different climate in terms of the tenor of the movie.”

- Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe) is now a special agent of some kind (Monroe said she was kind of like a Secret Service agent), but wouldn’t reveal any more details. In addition to working for Lanford, she also has to deal with having a famous father and growing up in the public eye.

- Jesse Usher plays Dylan Hiller, the son of Will Smith’s character, Steven Hiller. Usher says his performance was partially influenced by Smith’s, and that Dylan, like Patricia, has also grown up in the shadow of a father who helped saved the world.

- Angelbaby plays Rain, an orphan who grew up to become a fighter pilot.

- Liam Hemsworth’s character, Jake Morrison, is also an orphan who grew up to become a fighter pilot. However, Jake made some kind of mistake, and now he’s been exiled to work on the moon base and operate a Moon Tug (image: right), which is basically a forklift.

- Jasmine, “is no longer working the pole,” says Vivica A. Fox. “She’s no longer a stripper with a heart of gold.” Jasmine now works as a hospital administrator, and continues to support her son and his choices.

- Judd Hirsch (Julius Levinson) wanted the father-son relationship to be strong no matter where he and David were. His arc in the movie is to get to David.

I agree.

I mean I think we all know why she wasn't brought back. Sucks for her, but I mean nothing to do about it now.

Does it really suck for her though? When was the last time Emmerich did anything that people cared about?

????

Who cares about what Emmerich's output the last few years? People care about IDR. Being in it probably would've resulted in a decent payday for her at the last. And then some major exposure.

IM sure she's not hurting over it, but IM just saying

So let me guess...Hiller and Whitmore hookup, and Morrison and Rain do as well.

Was this posted?

Why Will Smith didn't return
Then, as Emmerich puts it, After Earth happened. And all of a sudden, Will Smith wasn’t eager to rush into a science-fiction story structured around a father-son duo on an adventure. Emmerich told us:
In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out."

Whitman absence doesn't bother me. I think she's wonderful and it would have been a great opportunity for her but she played a bit part in the first film, as the cute kid. Same with Hiller's son.

(Plus, we got Maika Monroe. :hrt:)

Big Willie's absence does bother me though. It doesn't feel right. Not that I blame the production. He was in the script and they tried like hell to get him back.

Damn you, After Earth. :cmad:

well at the time Smith thought After Earth would be a hit for some reason.
