Interstellar - Part 4

Well, to be fair... the only things selling this movie at the moment is Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey. We mustn't forget how hot Matthew is right now.

If this movie underperforms, he'll bounce back I'm sure... but he needs to be careful as it's amazing how quickly a studio forgets their own successes and the people that bought it to them.

This movie needs 2 hit big with Trailer 3 & wow the General Audience

Going by Nolan's usual trailer release schedule, we should get the next one in early August. They will probably want it with the biggest movie possible, so it's either going to be with Guardians, Turtles, or Expendables 3. I really hope it's with Guardians because 1) it's less than 4 weeks away and 2) I think it will make the most money.

I'm not really sure Matt is a selling point really, he's very hot in Hollywood, in that world, but will the general audience go see a movie just because he's in it? Nah, don't think so, and I love the guy.

Star power just isn't what it used to be. However, Nolan's name will be the draw like you say. No way this underperforms, let's remember the huge hit Inception was.

I think the marketing is fine. I really want to see it. However, it isn't the marketing of a Nolan action movie. It's a sci fi drama. It's never exactly going to have a fast past action trailer, hopefully WB isn't expecting the Inception crowd for this.

We are fan boys so most will see it by default We do things like read leaked scripts etc. We know what 2 at least expect from this movie. This is just not being sold good enough for the general audience

We'll see in good time, this is so not failing though.

What exactly are you basing this information on? Have you polled the general audience recently? If so, I'd like to see your results.

The marketing is fine. This one already has 2 trailers, a poster, and a still. The same can't be said for the other releases at that time. Heck, this one had a teaser a year in advance of its release. That's usually just reserved for comic book movies.

I'm hearing some buzz that this may be premiering at the Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals well before its theatrical run. If true, kind of bolsters the idea that WB/Paramount are thinking of this in terms of an Oscar season film moreso than a big blockbuster.

Toronto? That would be two months before its release date. That means it would have to be finished before that to premiere in early September. Does anyone know when Nolan typically finishes his movies? This seems like one of those things where as much time as possible will be needed to finish.

I think I read somewhere that it's finished. Like, I think one of the VFX guys tweeted something about it wrapping up.

Yeah... Nolan is pretty efficient when it comes to post-production (well everything).

He's probably just adding finishing touches as we speak.

Film festivals could be great to get the word out but can backfire. I remember last year The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was getting big buzz after its trailers but it came out at the New York festival I believe and got pretty harsh response which seemed to damage it.

Obviously this is Nolan instead of Ben Stiller but still I thought they'd do smaller test screenings for this.

Nolan has a record of finishing films ahead of schedule and under budget, so it wouldn't surprise me if Interstellar would be ready by September. From memory I think TDK was finished almost 2 months before its premier.

Oh, definitely. If this movie does insane numbers (which I don't think it will), it'll further establish him as an untouchable director with carte blanche. "Seriously? The non-franchise, non-sequel, slow, abstract drama starring Matthew McConnaughey made a billion dollars? Sure, give the man whatever the hell he wants."
Nolan is making a slow, abstract drama starring Matthew after Interstellar, the spralling sci-fi epic?
I cannot wait.

I went to a cinematography panel Wally gave in June 2008, and he said they were finishing up the color-timing. So yeah, finishing touches. The fact that they were finishing it and not rushing or freaking out was impressive. :yay: I think that is pretty rare about big budget films.

@edgarwright: Have heard from two different people that 'Interstellar' is Chris Nolan's best film. Bring on November. I want to see it in 65mm. Like, now.

That's what everybody says. :hehe:

^ Did you get flashbacks to the reports of studio people giving TDKR standing ovations and men openly crying because it will change cinema forever? :oldrazz: :awesome:

@edgarwright I also spoke to someone that saw it and they just raved and raved and raved.
