I think Best Picture is The Intimidation Game's to lose.

-Period piece. More specifically WW2.
-Main character is an eccentric British genius.
-Rave reviews surrounding the lead performance (Cumberbatch).
-Won an audience award at a recent film festival.
-Backed by the Weinstein Company.

Hits all the sweet spots for Academy voters.

BUT... Is it about the Holocaust? Does it have Kate Winslet or Cate Blanchett, or really any Kates or Cates at all?

Inception, Avatar, Gravity, and Dark Knight didn't win Best Picture. Hell, the last wasn't even nominated.

There are a lot of good, safe Oscar-bait films this season. And we are still dealing with an Academy that is dominated by old white guys.

One of those is your winner, methinks.

But.. But.. Nolan. Wormholes. My Cocaine.

This is all premature guessing, mind you. But the Academy is so unimaginative and predictable with their choices most of the time that it's usually pretty safe to guess which movies they'll skew more towards.

It's going to take some serious rave reviews and public acclaim for this to stand a chance.

Yeah, I've been disappointed way too many times by the Academy to suddenly have faith in them now.

Here's my bold prediction though...IF something big happens with Interstellar, will either win BP or Best Director, but not both.

The TV spots have revealed two of the 3 awesome final shots of the IMAX trailer now. I really hope they dont reveal the last and best one.

These films have been seen and reviewed in some capacity, whether it be a wide theater release, limited theater release, or film festival circuit.

Recent years have taught us to expect nine nominees at most. This is insane competition. At least four of these films already have overwhelmingly positive responses and are all but guaranteed slots (Birdman, Boyhood, Mr. Turner, Whiplash). If Interstellar gets anything but universal acclaim, you can rule it out. There are just too many films here that are going to tug at those old voters' heart strings.

I think the thing that may help Interstellar in a potential Oscar bid is its use of real scientific principles, sci-fi films in general don't adhere to the laws of the universe, even Gravity was a little nonchalant in this regard, but from what we know Interstellar may very well be the most scientifically accurate sci-fi movie in long time, perhaps even ever given Kip Thorne is involved. All it really needs to do is create a sense of wonder about what the universe is and what our place in it is and that may be enough to woo people to its side.

Yeah the one where everything is rotating and you actually see it go through. That will look stunning.

The Empire article mentioned while Bill Irwin played both Tars and Case on set. The voice over he did for Case will be replaced in the final film. They didnt mention who it will be though.

Eh. I'm sure it'll be a great film, but this is one of those instances where it's going to be an instant cultural phenomenon, I think. Like Inception, or Avatar, or Gravity, or Dark Knight. Maybe not in terms of box office. There are only a handful of these movies that come out every decade. People will definitely be head over heels for it.

How many cultural phenomenons do you know of that were predicted beforehand?
It might happen .
Or people could just love it as a great movie ,
Without it being a game changer .

It warms my heart to see an artist like yourself care about this, but my suspicion is that the general audience and even Oscar voters don't care about "real scientific principles", and they don't know and don't care who Kip Thorne is.

BTW Europa Report is decently accurate, though it was made on a microbudget.

I tell you sir, the GA loves scientific accuracy, as witnessed by the success of stuff like jersey shore: they love those psychological study, and how being abducted by aliens can make you totally shallow. which is why the GA will love a movie about wormholes.

We saw #Interstellar in 70mm IMAX tonight. Compounded the resonance with 2001 in fascinating ways. And the blacks and whites - mmmm!

Yeah, those roundtables are great. I hope it gets posted soon.

The next couple of weeks will be crazy. There will be hyperbole. There will also be those who don't love it, causing people to freak out and panic. That's already happening now over at Nolanfaps due to the "depressing" tweet (that reaction was from a little girl btw).

Let's just keep it in perspective...if guys like Edgar Wright and PTA say it's incredible, how bad can it really be? I'm just gonna take a deep breath, try to let go whatever expectations I have and go in with an open mind, ready to go on a journey. This whole "This movie better be the greatest film of all time OR ELSE!!" attitude always has the potential to suffocate a film. I really hope that doesn't happen to Interstellar because I think the ideas this film is willing to explore will be a huge breath of fresh air for pop culture. Not to mention, the visuals and score alone will probably be worth the price of admission.

Yeah, and I get that. I just think there's a danger of getting too fixated on what a film isn't when you build up a certain expectation in your head to the point where you can miss out on enjoying what a film is.

i write criticism for a couple places so i'm as guilty as anyone when it comes to talking this way sometimes...but wth is this guy talking about? "an angry, Heinlein-influenced rebuttal" to 2001? i mean, i haven't seen the movie, but somehow i doubt that's a very apt summation from what i do know of it. i could be wrong, though, i guess.
