Interstellar - Part 8

I'm pretty certain the whole cheering and clapping is an American thing. I personally don't see the point in clapping after a film, lol.

What's the point in clapping after anything?

Applause is the shared expression of approval by clapping from a group or audience. A sign of enjoyment. Do you consider applause after a film less valid than applause after a live performance because the filmmakers/actors aren't present to hear the clapping?

If anything, I think applause after a good movie is more earnest because the audience is doing so more out of pure enjoyment/approval and not because it's the proper thing to do after a live performance.

I really felt like I was on a journey with Cooper. As he kept going deeper, I felt like I was too. I felt like I was the one seeing things that have never been seen. And that I was too far in to ever find a way back. The shaking theater really helped sell it. lol

Agreed.

After my showing, the entire audience did the wave, and then sat up and high fived each other, and then did cartwheels down the steps through the doors.

Yeah people clap all the time in LA.

I don't get why people get made over it. I like it only because of the energy it gives off. Everyone's in agreement, and that's always a great feeling. It makes the theater experience more...human and non cynical.

I love having the crowd cheering during a film depending on what it is.
When me and my friends went to go see Taken back whenever, the whole crowd including us were into it. Cheering and all that.
Same for when I went to go see Age of Extinction.

It depends on the movie. Of course when I go watch Fury or Nightcrawler or even Interstellar I dont want people cheering and clapping throughout the movie, but for something that's supposed to be really fun, then I dont mind it.

I dont see much clapping at the end of the movie anymore, but then again I havent been to a night screening in a while. Ive done it before. It's no thing

I'll just leave this here:

That's weird. My audience just started singing "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys in unison.

It makes sense to me during a concert or a live theatre production, but a movie where the creative team can't hear you? Pointless to me.

This reminds me of some poster on here I forget who it is, and Im sure he's still around and Im not trying to poke fun at him or anything, but he said he never laughed at a movie. Not even when he's with his friends, the whole audience is laughing, or even if he finds something funny.

That just sounded terrible and one of the worst things I ever heard lol

Exactly. I mean, it's obviously appropriate at certain times and not so much at others. For instance, if I attended a Sunday matinee of 12 Years a Slave that had roughly 20 people in attendance, I wouldn't expect applause.

But if you're in a sold-out showing of a highly-anticipated tentpole movie that delivers on its expectations on opening night, I think applause is exciting and often warranted. I don't see it as being much different than attending a Broadway show, and I don't think there's anything wrong with showing appreciation for something that people put a lot of time, effort, and money into making.

Different cultures, different attitudes.

Gotcha. Figured you'd say that.

JMC....But what about watching a sports game on tv with your friends? When you're cheering or reacting, the players can't hear you!

Smell what I'm cooking?

Sport and theatre two different experiences in my book.

but the idea is the still the same: the athletes can't hear or see you.

Really depends on the film and how it ends. And when your showing is. Normally, midnight showing crowds are more energetic. And if its an exciting movie in the way that the Avengers was, then people are probably more likely to clap.
I will admit that I have started the slow clap a couple of times for movies. And then that has turned into applause. :p 9 times out of 10, no one claps at the end of a movie here. When they do, you know the movie must've really been a crowd pleaser.

I think he's advocating the party. lol

This is how I picture JMC at certain places

JMC is out 2 eat with family & or friends or both. Well thats if anyone he knows wants 2 even hang out with the guy. That place has a TV on with a sports game & people next 2 Octoberist are cheering on a team playing JMC would look at them & say

"Shut the **** up Im trying 2 eat in peace here. Those a holes can not hear you anyway"

If JMC visited a theater & they clapped at the end he would simply yell at people saying

"Shut the **** up I want 2 go home in peace *****es"

I think you're talking about jmc. Prob best not to make a post that personally attacks or criticizes someone without actually reading the conversation to understand the context of the conversation and see who's saying what.

And now, you are the one who has pooped on that party.

What are you talking about? I don't think you read my response to JMC correctly, because he thinks it's inappropriate to clap at the theater. I just mentioned that people get emotional and vocal during sports games on TV. It's not any different, but JMC see it's different though different culture values, etc.
