I'm pretty certain the whole cheering and clapping is an American thing. I personally don't see the point in clapping after a film, lol.
What's the point in clapping after anything?
Applause is the shared expression of approval by clapping from a group or audience. A sign of enjoyment. Do you consider applause after a film less valid than applause after a live performance because the filmmakers/actors aren't present to hear the clapping?
If anything, I think applause after a good movie is more earnest because the audience is doing so more out of pure enjoyment/approval and not because it's the proper thing to do after a live performance.
