er spidey and venoms first confrontation took place in daylight in the comics, where does this so called night time theme come in...???

At the church. They ultimately end up at the Our Lady Of Saints Church. The time of day is night.

This episode had the most elaborate explanation of of the symbiote's rejetion I have ever seen in a Spider-Man series. I loved it!

Peter's battle with Venom in ASM 300 was in broad daylight.
Indeed it was, and it led into night time if I remember correctly. I loved how Venom webbed Spidey up to the bell tower and the Symbiote made him dress in a preist gown.

I liked how the symbiote was vulnerable to vibrations and not sounds wave specifically.

Best Part IMO: The ASM #100 homage... I mean wow that was sweet. Ed Asner did a good Uncle Ben, he's done a lot of spidey voice work, wonder if he's a fan. Borrowing the movie lines was cool I suppose, also seems a little lazy. They didn't have to be word for word.
Not sure if I'm gonna like Venom's voice, not deep enough.

When the cops took venom away at the end, it didn't seem particularly dark, saying this though I wouldn't count it as their first scuffle regardless.

They met during the day.

10/10

The writing was one of the major pull factors of this episode. Greg was writing it so that shouldn't have been a surprise. Dialogue was fantastic, Josh wasn't kidding when he said we'd know which episode he was talking about when he said it had great writing.

Peter's interaction's with Eddie and MJ, Gwen, and Liz were great, showed how much he's changed, loved when Pete just smacked Eddie. The stuff provided for a stronger motivation and probably the best in any form of media.

The separation from the symbiote was different than the other's before it making it more of a psychological battle. SM3 shouldn't have had the tagline "The battle within" cause this utterly makes more sense of that tagline than the movie itself did.

Loved it when Spidey asked Tombstone for the job. Something I didn't see coming. The origin story, my favorite in animation next to SMAHAF Spidey origin. Gwen's feelings for Peter were pretty obvious the whole season, my guess is since "Peter figures out what kind of girl he needs in the season finale" that would be Gwen when she steps up her game. Hehe.

Flash being Peter's voice of reason was another thing I didn't see coming, first I thought he was gonna b**** slap him too. I caught that homage to ASM #100's cover. Somebody needs to take a screen cap of that, ASAP. Eddie's transformation was awesome "We've got some thing's to share with you".

Can't wait for the season finale.

Okay, first off, if Pete is going to get that ruthless under the influence of the symbiote, I'm glad they built up to it slowly and subtly. Far better than the 90s series, which turned him into a monster within a single day, and the less said about symbiote Peter's depiction in "Spider-Man 3" the better. I especially like how my expectations were completely played. I expected Peter to punch out Flash, to do something nasty to Sally. To beat the snot out of Tombstone. But, nope, the people he's cruel to are his friends. Speaking of Tombstone, I am looking forward to the consequences of Spidey's deal with him. Spidey realizing he's saying "we" instead of "I" was well done, and it's nice to see the now, iconic cathedral scene. Hmm, Saint Damien's Cathedral, Greg? ;)

Flash Thompson was the voice of reason. Wow. I really liked that, it makes Flash a strong character and not just a stereotypical jock/bully. He dislikes Peter because he thinks Peter is an elitist jerk. Under the symbiote's influence, Peter proved him right. Now,

Flashback time. Okay, I'm sure some people won't like it, but I'm enjoying the black and white. But the most pleasant surprise is Ed Asner as Uncle Ben. That's perfect casting, and I'm glad that was kept under wraps. Really enjoyed it. This was also a great way to present the origin, a nice combination of the original comic book origin, and the movie's origin.

Uncle Ben as Peter's conscience, and the symbiote as the devil on his shoulder. I like it. Lots of flashbacks, almost like a clip show, and yet it wasn't. I know some people aren't into that sort of thing, but I loved this episode. It wasn't just an origin, it was a character study. A very solid character study.

Fanboy moment, I loved the homage to the cover of "Amazing Spider-Man #100"

Finally, Eddie Brock becomes Venom. Allow me, if you will, my own tangent here. I never liked Venom and mostly because of Eddie Brock. This is a character who has never been done well in any prior incarnation, even the original comic books. He was poorly conceived, poorly written, poorly characterized... and became a super star character. He's the Michael Bay of comic book villains. After he first appeared, everyone it seems, tried to create over the top muscle bound villains with no depth who could kick the hero's asses worse than any of their pre-established nemesis. For Batman it was Bane; for Superman it was Doomsday... when those stories would better be told with pre-established villains like the Joker, Ra's al Ghul, Lex Luthor or Darkseid. I could go further, but there are entire essays on this. Personally, I think Venom is the poster child for everything that was wrong with comic books in the 90s, from the lack of creativity to the internal politics.

Now, all that being said, I liked this. It was definitely the best origin for Venom I have ever seen, and while that may not be saying much, I really did enjoy it. The symbiote itself was very well depicted. While I had misgivings about Eddie's behavior last week, he made a lot more sense today. He lost his job, his education, his future. Not to say he's absolved of responsibility. If he didn't let his hatred for Peter get in the way, he could have made the best of it, found another job and really worked for it. There are people out there who scrub toilets to pay for their educations. But then, when everything seemed okay, and the symbiote wasn't dead, Eddie released it and bonded with it. So, in the end, Eddie really screwed himself over. But it was done well, certainly better than the Sin Eater retcon in the original comic books. I have never been a fan of Venom, but I have accepted a while back that he's here to stay. The Green Goblin; Dr. Octopus and Venom... the unholy trinity.

Brilliant script, Greg. Brilliant episode. I am looking forward to next week's. Make me a fan of Venom.

Well, yeah, that's basically what I meant. Anyway, I do really like the fact that they are going to fight during the day just like in the comics. :yay:

It was at night (the church scene). I don't have my books with me (on vacation) but I recall Spidey phoning home after defeating Venom and a street light was on behind him. Also, the police did not come and take Venom away. Spidey took Venom to the Fantastic Four's HQ, where it was night because Ben Grimm complained about how late it was (he was already asleep).

I was sure that their 1st confrontation was during the night. Again, I don't have my books. But can someone reread ASM 300? The part where Peter and Rob are talking on Peter's balcony, and Venom swings by - I though that was at night.

I remember almost perfectly that their first confronation was during the day and basically ended at night. I'll go check one of by TPB's.

I.R. Venom, it seems as though it was during the day, but it was going on night time. So basically, it was afternoon-late afternoon.

Awesome episode! I loved all the homages, especially the ASM 100 cover! That was epic awesomeness :D

After the insane Sinister Six episode, it was nice to see an episode that may be a bit less action packed in the physical sense and really delve into 'mental' action of this arc. I really enjoyed seeing Uncle Ben play such an integral role in Pete's life and also helping to shape Spidey as a hero outside of the whole Great power and responsibility mantra. There was just so much heart in this whole episode!

I also really enjoyed seeing the supporting cast, and wished to have seen a bit of the fallout from Pete's verbal meltdown :( Maybe next episode...

In future episodes, I hope Spidey cracks wise about how he fought his own costume :D

10/10 for me too!

So far, this episode is what makes TSSM's better than SM TAS's symbiote arc. The psychological battles.

Exactly, we didn't get to see the Symbiote story such in depth like this in TAS. The dream battle was more in depth, then we got to see flash backs of the past and what made Peter become Spdiey and be hero and what great deeds he has done so far.

i really loved thiis episode. I think it rocked of how peter fought the symbiote. How he got him out of his head and destroyed it. Also how uncle ben was like invincible when peter was in trouble. I loved how brock is ready to kill peter/spidey also how the symbiote gave brock peter memories. I loved how venom look cool. 10/10 definetly. :woot:

Also, did anybody notice how Peter and Uncle Ben talking in the car with every think white (grey ni tihs case) in the background like in Spidey2? I think everything was greay, but I could be wrong.

o poop I thought it was a rerun today. I missed it!
