The question is, not whether it is getting repetative (because it definitely has been for about a decade now) but how long have you been into anime? Because my theory is this:
When you first get into anime, it all looks the same - the art style, the quality, the characters, etc. Then there's that one show that hooks you, blows your mind, and begins the obsession. You taste matures, your eyes open to the differences and nuances between genres, studios and styles, and you realize that, Hey, it's not all the same.
But, inevitably (in my experience and that of my friends), if you watch enough of it, it all seems the same again. You try a new show and think, Oh, such-an-such did this five years ago, and did it better. Your favorite show is such a hit that other studios try and copycat its success, so you have to endure years of lookalikes until they beat the concept to death.
Or worse, you've watched anime for sooo freakin' long that they do remakes of shows that you saw originally (when the Appleseed movie came out in all its CGI slickness, I thought, God, I'm old.)
What's the cure for the anime blues? Take a break. I did for a few years. Recently I walked into Best Buy and headed down the anime aisle (what happened to the good ol' days when this was an underground hobby I could be snobbish about?), and I saw four shows I hadn't even heard of, and plenty more that I knew of but hadn't seen. I got excited again, and went home to pack my Netflix account full of 'em.
Hooray for cartoons with death!
