By his final few novels (and years alive) he improved a great deal. The Blofeld Trilogy is incredible.

Thunderball, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice.

I may have to check those out sometime.

You Only Live Twice,
Once when you are born,
Twice when you face death.

why didn't skyfall have a skydiving sequence.

All the James Bonds down the barrel.

Very awesome.

This proves that Craig's imitating Dalton's gunbarrel. Good, because it's my favorite non-CR gunbarrel. Brosnan's pretty graceful, too.

I wonder if Bond "dying" before the start of the title sequence and it transitioning into the titles was a nod to that happening in YOLT?

He didn't mean literally dude, he meant something that upped the stakes, the shootout at Skyfall lodge was very basically shot in comparison to the bravura quality of the opening sequence.

Exactly my point. Again i chalk it up to mendes not being very familiar with action.

Regardless of what some people are saying bond and great action are synonymous. If SkyFall had raised the stakes like GP it probably would be right up there with CR or ahead of it to me.

I kinda think if Skyfall went into production a little later some of the people involved would have probably seen GP and tried to top it. As it is (soon to be was) the biggest spy film box office wise non-inflated and bond is always kinda influenced by it's competition.

How many action scenes in Bond's history are better or on par with the first and last in Skyfall? The PTS, foot chase and stairwell fight in CR. The raid in OHMSS. Bond vs. Grant. The PTS and tank scene in GoldenEye maybe.

Hard to think of better action scenes in Bond. Also I much prefer when they keeps his battles to something he can do in his "suits" if that makes sense. He is spy. He sneaks, he chases and he shoots straight. He is a professional killer who is good at his job. That is why I don't think it "fits the script". They did that kind of stuff in Brosnan films. Not good.

Precisely! Personally, the last thing I want in a Bond film is Ghost Protocol style action. It's too ridiculous and over the top for my taste.

What? I think nearly all the action sequences in previous Bond movies (except maybe QOS) are better than the finale in Skyfall. I thought that was underwhelming, and more like something you'd find in a show like the A-Team or Burn Notice, which is good for TV, but not really on a large enough scale for Bond.

If anything, every 80s Bond movie and every non-GE Brosnan movie are TV-like, visually and execution-wise.

I don't think Octopussy is TV-like. It has some great visuals, locations, sequences and stunts you wouldn't get on TV at all. I admit LTK is a bit like a TV movie.

And I'm talking specifically about certain scenarios/ sequences that are typical on TV at the time of the film - the end sequence in Skyfall is the kind of thing that happens frequently on Burn Notice, albeit on not as large a budget of course.

Well I just watched them all. The vast majority of Bond action scenes lack kinetic energy, look staged and most of the time come about in the most contrived ways. That is not to mention Craig is the first Bond to even look like he knows how to fire a gun. That in and of itself has gone a long way in the scenes working on a visceral level.

Also I want to know these tv shows with action scenes like the finale. GoT spent 10 million on the finest television action scene we have seen since Rome, if not ever, and it looks cheap in comparison. It also emphasized Bond's skills, training and wit.

I find that CR, QoS (mostly) and Skyfall have done a good job of giving Bond his best action scenes, without turning him into an a robo-action star.

And? It was shot beautifully and worked perfectly in the context of the film. Also gave us something different which is always a good thing when done right.

And Burn Notice takes after movies its writers have seen. I didn't know a stand-off scenario was exclusive for TV.

The direction of John Glen was pure TV. They went to exotic locations and that's it. The whole 80s Bond mentality was not at all cinematic.

Octopussy definitely looked big scale, very Indiana Jones-ish which makes sense since that was one of the things they were going for.

It featured exotic and majestic locations. They also changed a couple of countries, so yes, the scope was big. But again, Glen was the kind of guy who just placed the camera to an adequate place and shot. He was serviceable, but just that.

What are all these other great action scenes in the series? I pretty much named most if not all of them.

Ski chase/ pre-titles sequence in TSWLM;
Little Nellie dogfight, volcano raid in YOLT;
Acrostar, train fight/chase, plane fight in OP;
Skydiving and cable car fight in MR;
Aston Martin chase, raid on Fort Knox/ fight with Oddjob in GF to name but a few.

You'd be asking me to list nearly all the action sequences in Bond, which I'm too bored to do, so you might as well just look them up yourself.

Raid on Fort Knox and fight with Oddjob? Those rank up there with the worst easily.

Like hell they do. They're my favorites. Some of the special fx are a bit dated, but that just adds to charm of it.

I always find it hilarious that even up to "moonraker" there's an army backing up bond

Thunderball- scuba troops!
You only live twice- ninja troops!

The spy who loved me- submarine crew
Moonraker- space troops!

In For Your Eyes Only he had Topol and his men. In Octopussy he had Octopussy's female army. It was a common thing to make the big climax more exciting.
