James Bond In Skyfall - - - - - Part 14

Yeah, there's a difference between visual effects and cinematography. Deakins should have won.

Also, I thought the tribute was a massive let down and just felt cobbled together like an after thought. More time and effort was put into the words used for Halle's teleprompter. The montage was weak and I've seen better tributes on YouTube. Hell, the bafta tribute was better and of course the only good thing was Bassey belting out GF. I thought she would have done DAF too. The tribute felt disappointing and underwhelming and rushed out of the way. I don't know why they even bothered to do one if it was going to be done so begrudgingly. Anyway below is a link to the tribute for those who didn't see it.

Here's the original recording/opening montage of Goldfinger, by Shirley Bassey, if anyone here is curious to hear the difference.

And there's a lot more to cinematography then extreme back lighting . Looking at the that list , outside of Life of Pi , not one actually deserved to be nominated. And Skyfall was actually the worst in that department , comparing with the others.

Deakins is one talented mofo. Some of his older work is as gorgeous as it gets. Those natural compositions are breathtaking. That's his recognition . He doesnt need pity awards. Much less , for what is one of his worst works and conservative as hell.

Miranda's work was astonishing in Pi. It's not even in the same league as the other works nominated.

I suspect Deakins didn't win because of the environment a lot of the cinematography was done in during LIFE OF PI.

And wow, Bassey can belt for a woman of 76. Stole the show and then some.

It wasn't just the backlighting, although it was an aesthetic that I appreciated throughout the movie and I enjoyed the variations of it, from the LED fight to much of the last part of the film cast in firelight.

Just in general I think the action was very well composed and comprehensible. A large part of that is also in the editing of course, but especially in comparison to Quantum and many other action heavy movies of recent times, and Skyfall stands tall in that department.

Scotland, also, was gorgeous.

Anything looks good in comparison to Quantum :woot:

The 2nd half of the movie , is boring setups one after the other. Absolute bottom tier regarding Deakins career. I've no idea why fans of his work would want him to win for such a normal job.

Miranda's work on the other hand , was simply breathtaking.

Not much of a difference except the arrangement is tuned down by about a 3rd. But I guess she's older now. The 57 key changes are still there in the song, but instead of starting in A its E ... but I guess it dovetails nicely into the Bond theme they were playing before which was in E.

Can someone please gif the scene of Silva laughing at the Bond's graves as an avvy for me? Please?

I just watched Bassey's Goldfinger number at the Oscars last night on Youtube. She's still got it. Powerful set of lungs for a lady who's in her mid 70's.

Great way to mark Bond's 50th.

Do you think the Master should've been nominated and won?

According to Deadline, it was true that during the genesis of the Bond segment, the producers wanted all of the Bond actors present but Connery refused. Suposedly Brosnan didnt want to do it either but thats a first ive eard of that. So they went ahead without any of the actors.

Goes back to his tmz comment

" I know two people that won't be there"

Well , i think 2012 in this department was simply amazing. Just tremendous. All over the world. I cant' say i had one favorite , but if Mihai Malaimare won i think it would have been appropriate.

I can tell you which ones i found compelling

Mihai Malaimare in The Master , Miranda in Pi , Robert Yeoman in Moonrise , Greig Fraser Killing Them Softly (i still havent seen zero dark) , Caroline Champetier in Holy Motors , Pfister in Rises and Stephane Fontaine in Rust and Bones . Those were the movies that i think their visuals should be celebrated.

I also liked Seamus in Anna Karenina and John Toll in Cloud Atlas. A little bit more classical , but very well made pictures. I just think the others one i mentioned are in a class apart.

There are other stuff. I've read a lot of americans talking about Once Upon Time in Anatolia as a 2012 movie , so it definitely belongs in that list....but i saw the movie last year. There's also a little movie called Tabu , but that one is very experimental (all done in 1:33.1 b/w , some parts with 16mm !! It looked great).

I havent seen the new Malick , so i cant put Lubezki in there. But the trailer is enough to see that its probably drop dead gorgeous.

If Nolan is looking for a guy , he should call Mihai Malaimare eheh. Or Elswit.

That is indeed amazing. A fitting tribute to the Bond legacy. Very well sequenced.

Is it just me or does it seem like the only actor that actually liked playing Bond was Roger Moore?

I think Dalton may have enjoyed it...he didn't seem too sour on the EoN documentary, and the same goes for Brosnan. I do, however, remember what Craig said a few months back, which was slightly disappointing.

Watching this now. Definitely better than the other two. Although, it seems to me that structurally the plot hits almost all the same beats as The Dark Knight. The overall story that is. Silva reminds me of Joker a lot. He's even disfigured

You do know that this movie was influenced by TDK right? Mendes said it in an interview before it even came out.

Dalton's more of a guess based on how uncomfortable he looked in the role at times and his short tenure. I haven't heard anything from him complaining about the role, but it seems like it was just another job he did. Moore is really the only one that has embraced being 007 as far as I know.

Agreed on Moore. However, IIRC it was because Dalton's Bond wasn't really accepted by the GP, moreso than it was him not enjoying it. Right?

Yeah, the Bond films are heavily influenced with what films are popular at the time:

Live and Let Die = Blaxploitation flicks
Moonraker = Star Wars
Licence to Kill = 80's crime/drug cartel movies
Tomorrow Never Dies = John Woo films
Die Another Day = Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer movies
Casino Royale = Batman Begins
Quantum of Solace = Bourne films
Skyfall = The Dark Knight with a little bit of Straw Dogs and Home Alone.

You forgot about From Russia With Love = Hitchcock movies and On Her Majesty's Secret Service = Where Eagles Dare
