50 years of Bond (set to Skyfall)

That's how you do a celebratory montage, tell the Acadamy Awards...

I made a thread for this but wasn't receiving the number of responses I had hoped for. I want to talk about the film's predecessor and the opening titles. I really thought the "Skyfall" and "Casino Royale" openings were tremendous. It seems most were not satisfied with the film's main titles, citing the opening song, "Another Way to Die," to be a complete departure from what fans might have expected and not thematic enough.

Incredibly, listeners of well-known Canadian artist Gino Vannelli's music may have recognized his 1981 song, "Nightwalker," from the album of the same name, to have a sound fitting for a Bond movie. After exploring what this may sound like when synchronized with various James Bond openings, I realized how well it fits with both the main titles of "Skyfall" and "Quantum of Solace." In particular, the context of the song matches the dynamics of the protagonist as he struggles with the loss of Vesper Lynd at the end of "Casino Royale."

By replacing "Another Way to Die" with "Nightwalker," the main titles contain a very different tone, enhancing the on-screen visuals and creating an opening worthy of rivaling its counterparts from "Casino Royale" and "Skyfall," and perhaps harkening back to the openings of the 1970s and '80s.

This is "Nightwalker" by Gino Vannelli envisioned as a James Bond opening song. I have not added the sound effects from the beginning of the clip, but that is actually when the song itself begins.

While the film was disappointing, it could have at least had a decent song. In fact, we saw a celebration of the series' music at the 2013 Academy Awards. The James Bond film series is 50 years old now. What are your thoughts on the above?

You do know that this movie was influenced by TDK right? Mendes said it in an interview before it even came out.

Nope. No idea in the slightest. I'm not the biggest Bond fan. Honestly I've only really seen the Brosnan and Craig films. Maybe some of the others when I was young. I just didn't follow most stuff about this movie so that little factoid passed me by. It's pretty noticeable though just how influenced it was.

Yeah, the Bond films are heavily influenced with what films are popular at the time:

Live and Let Die = Blaxploitation flicks
Moonraker = Star Wars
Licence to Kill = 80's crime/drug cartel movies
Tomorrow Never Dies = John Woo films
Die Another Day = Michael Bay/Jerry Bruckheimer movies
Casino Royale = Batman Begins
Quantum of Solace = Bourne films
Skyfall = The Dark Knight with a little bit of Straw Dogs and Home Alone.

You could also add Octopussy = Indiana Jones, myself, I sorta see it, but I really need to dig up the article I read about those two a while back...actually, It might be the other way around.

That was the exact same thought I had after watching that tribute. Pretty underwhelming all around.

Okay, this is a question for those who have read the Bond books. Which ones are the best? I have most of Fleming's (save Moonraker and Man W/Golden Gun), Scorpius, Die another Day ( :o ), Goldeneye, and a few others, but have yet to read them. Which aren't worth picking up, and which ones are?

I think Fleming's are by far the best as literature. All of his novels set in the Caribbean are worth reading.

that 50 years of Bond set to Skyfall was all kinds of wow

I just grabbed Moonraker. I've heard great things, so I can't wait to read it. Is Man with the golden gun any good?

It's not bad, but it's not as polished as the others. Fleming thought it needed rewrites, but died while he was revising it.

You're in for a treat with Moonraker, it's one of my favorite books in the series.

I've heard (unlike the movie) it's something special. I can't wait for it to get here.

I suppose since it seems to be the average one of them, I'll get that when I finish the others.

I just re-watched it again and i know i'm probably in the minority but i actually got a bit nostalgic for the Casino Royale/QoS era craig-bond.

I essentially look at those 2 films as one larger story at this point and I sort of miss that more rough and tumble still rising through the ranks bond. It seems we somehow skipped right to the old and jaded bond?

It's strange for like 4 years i didn't think much of QoS after seeing it in theatres but then i watched it back to back with CR and it became a much better film.

They are all good to great, it makes no read difference with Ian. There is a definate chronology in his life and series of events so it's always advisable to go chronologically, so start with the earliest one.

Scorpios is by John Gardner btw. Great Bond book too.

Oh, yeah I forgot to mention I have some of his too. Is benson's any good?

I do love Skyfall, but it annoys me that they were quick to jump the gun and reboot (even Craig said it in the special features on the Bluray that the idea was to start from the ground up all over again.) QoS wasn't that badly recieved, and according to RT, still over half the audience enjoyed it, and that doesn't gauge the entire audience anyways. Hell, most of the people i've asked about it really like it, just not as much as Casino. So, Casino was loved, Quantum was liked, and Skyfall was universally praised - It's not like Quantum was so hated that it warranted a ignoring of previous events, ala Die Another Day. I myself love all three of Craig's movies, but Cest La` vie.

The novel is nothing like the film so you are in for a treat.

Unfortunately, it's shipping from the UK, so it won't be here till the end of the month or later, apparently.:csad: Gives me time to read the others I have, however.:woot:

oh its a fantastic book, youll love it

Yeah, CR/QOS seemed like a reboot of Bond continuity, but Skyfall is basically what happens if Craig was cast as Bond, but they didn't reboot continuity at all.

Not really. There is still the major issue of it being Moneypenny's origin, who unlike M or Q is the same character in the previous films even after changing actors. Plus, the ending comes full circle with M being back in his old office. We are minus one six month trip in the hospital for Bond to getting to where we were at the beginning of Dr. No.

I agree with KR. Some of you guys are acting like Casino Royale and QoS isn't in continuity with Skyfall, which is not true. The Bond movies always had a loose continuity.

It makes me wonder how many people were complaining that SPECTRE wasn't in Goldfinger back in the 60s.

after watching that awesome 50 years of bond set to the Skyfall song I never realized how incredibly awesome it sounds just with the music no lyrics (don't get me wrong I LOVED the song but the instrumental one is great as well).

Nope. Fiennes' Gareth Mallory isn't Lee's Admiral Miles Messervy and this isn't about taking things full circle, it's about continuing to tell stories within extremely loose continuity of each other.
